In the community. Enjoy exclusive access to the Big Bald trail located right in the Wolf Laurel Resort Community. Park at the end of Big Bald Road in the trailhead parking lot, and take an easy two mile hike to the top for spectacular 360 degree multi state views. See North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia from the top. If you have time you should continue north on the Appalachian Trail to Big Stamp, a bald sub peak of Big Bald. You can see open grass extending to Big Stamp from Big Bald, it is less than a mile between the peaks. The Bald Mountains are a mountain range rising along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina in the southeastern United States. They are part of the Blue Ridge Mountain Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The Bald Mountains stretch from the Pigeon River in the south to the Nolichucky River in the north, and comprise parts of Cocke County, Greene County, and Unicoi County in Tennessee and parts of Madison County and Yancey County in North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains border the range to the south, and the Unakas rise opposite the Nolichucky to the north. The range gets its name from the relatively frequent occurrence of grassy balds atop the more prominent summits.

The hike to Big Bald from Sam's Gap is not for the faint at heart. It is a strenuous 13 mile out and back hike that is well worth it! You will walk a trail through a mix of open meadows where you can spot wildflowers during the spring and summer as well as deciduous forest. After six miles you will come to a bald with 365 degree views.
