Its name derives from the Latin mons testaceus : testae, meaning "tiles", "amphorae". The hill is in fact composed of many fragments of over 53 millions of terracotta amphorae, mostly olive oil, neatly arranged there in Roman times and coming from the nearby river port on the Tiber. For this reason, it constitutes a unique archaeological site.
