Count Nogi Maresuke, a military leader who fought in the Russo-Japanese War in the early 1900s, is enshrined here. Soldiers from the period are well known for this, but he specifically is famous for his strict adherence to the code of Bushido. Come here to feel a very tense, serious atmosphere commensurate with the samurai spirit. Take special note of the Nogi family’s belongings that are on display in the treasure hall. Look for the two ghastly short swords used by Maresuke and his wife Shizuka to commit suicide on the day of the funeral of the Meiji emperor.
