Summer of Surfing

To celebrate the return of travel and inspire Aussies to take a good old fashioned family beach holiday, Airbnb has partnered with Surfing Australia and pro surfer Owen Wright, along with other well known board-riders to showcase surf destinations across the country, ideal for those keen to hit the waves.

Owen's Top Surf Picks

Noosa: I love the coastal walkway around the points. Often do that with my family and stop at the gelato bar when we get back into town! Plus, it has the perfect points that my wife loves to mal ride.

Forster: Such a fun area with most of the beaches facing different directions so you can always get out of the wind. Boomerang beach is one of my favourite surf spots.

Murrawah: Bit off the beaten track. The coastline has such a raw heart to it. Love the slow pace of life here.

Narooma: Some of the best fishing charters and uncrowded waves! The pub overlooking the inlet is a winner!

Byron: Best cafes, beaches and all round good time! My family loves it. Byron really does have a wave that suits everyone.

Surf shacks in Queensland

Whilst large as a state, Queensland’s surfable coastline doesn’t make up a large percentage of its overall ocean border. Luckily, what is on offer is world-class and world famous. Starting on the border at Duranbah Beach, you only have to paddle a short distance north to one of the best point breaks on planet earth. A mix of Island and mainland breaks make up the majority of the surf coast ending just north of Agnes Waters below the Great Barrier Reef.

From the deep south lands of Tathra to the Tweed Coast in the far north, a travelling surfer can find pumping waves of all shapes and sizes in New South Wales.

From beach breaks and rock shelf slabs through to long perfect reef point breaks, Western Australia has it all. If you are serious about chasing waves in this state though a 4x4 is almost a must to get the full experience.

Surf shacks in South Australia

If cold water solitude is what you are after, South Australia is your state. Exit Adelaide stage left or right and an hour or so later you can be into perfect uncrowded waves of varying size and seriousness. The Fleurieu Peninsula probably takes the cake for most consistent conditions and variety of waves. Bring some solid rubber with you on this trip, even in summer the water temp is brisk.

Another cold-water state requiring a wetsuit almost year-round, Victoria offers uncrowded perfection on its day. Home to the legendary Surf Coast, there’s no shortage of waves just around the next corner on the Great Ocean Road, starting at Torquay you can get lost for days, weeks or years depending on your budget!

Surf shacks in Tasmania

The ‘Apple Isle’ is home to every type of wave you can think of. The east coast has endless beach break, slab and point setups with a slightly warmer air and water temperature in comparison to the rest of the state. The far south offers raw power whilst the west coast’s hidden bays and headlands offers a feeling of absolute wilderness making Tasmania a well-rounded surf destination for all levels of wave rider.
