"Mežmaļi" is managed by the "Stūrīši-Branki" family and we have 4 households in the centre of the Livonian (Liiv) village Mazirbe. All houses neighbour each other in a beautiful landscape – the garden and the surrounding fields are for you to walk around in and enjoy. Each house has a unique history and style, varied types of rooms and amenities. Stay with us if you appreciate nature, wild sea, great local food and warm, loving hospitality from a passionate family. Our breakfasts are WOW!
The household "Mežmaļi" is a true back-to-basics in countryside experience! It might feel like visiting the grandma's house. The house is spacious and has 6 rooms + veranda. The layout is centered around the hearth (firewood oven), so each room has two entrances.
Please make sure your booking reflects the correct amount of people, as the price is per person per night.
As you enter you will see:
->A fully stocked kitchen with a dining table, chairs, kettle, firewood oven and gas hob. The kitchen has all the necessary dishes, cutlery, pots, pans and assorted utensils for cooking you might need. We always have some tea, coffee, kitchen towels, washing-up liquids and other useful items in the house. Salt and some spices will be available and you are always welcome to borrow them from us. Just Google the Latvian name of the spice, before you ask. :)
During cold days, we will come to the house and light the hearth. During these days you are welcome to use the old oven and hobs to cook and heat up water. We always provide one bushel of firewood for warm days, in case you would wish to use the firewood oven.
->On your left, you will find the first bedroom, which is also a living room with chairs and a table. It has 3 beds - one double-sized sofa bed and two single beds.
->Following into the room, you will reach the second bedroom, which has a king-size bed, one single bed and one chaise-bed/sofa. This room also has its own table and living space. This room has another exit which leads to the kitchen.
->Across the kitchen there is a small room with another chaise-bed/sofa, which is really only for sleeping as this room is walk-through from all directions and leads to the veranda.
->Veranda has a couple chairs, a table and exit to the garden. Most guests choose to use this as their main entrance & exit during their stay as it leads straight to the shop and the village centre.
The garden is full of fruits and berries, which you are more than welcome to pick & eat, as much as you can!
As we need to take care of the garden and as "Mežmaļi" has a well for the garden-water supply, we will sometimes be around the property to make sure everything is watered and taken care of. We will do so as quickly as possible and fully respecting your privacy.
"Mežmaļi" is a true one-of-a-kind setting, where you have the opportunity to sleep and live in a setting which people in our village usually had in their houses during the Soviet era and a time before. Please explore the pictures carefully to assess the property for yourself - all pictures have a description.
In total the house can comfortably manage 10 adults & children. We have a crib if needed, and we can also expand the capacity of the house to 15 people with roll-away beds. There is free parking next to the house.
IMPORTANT TOPIC: FOOD
You can order breakfast with us, for €9 per person. Please let us know about your dietary preferences as we can look to accommodate almost any diet or dietary restriction.
"Stūrīši-Branki" over the years has gained a reputation of our massive & tasty breakfasts. These breakfasts are large enough for you to have something left over for a lunch snack or a proper lunch, depending on appetites.
However, when it comes to food, you will be taken care of. Our family is famous for our food generosity. If you stay with us at a fortunate time, when the local farmers and produce growers bring us something interesting, we always look if we can share them with our guests. If our Chief has inspiration, we also frequently provide guests with side-dishes for dinner (such as potatoes, veggies, dessert and so forth).
We often host large groups, which visit the "Stūrīši-Branki" household to learn more about the Livonian history and sample some traditional food. On these days we can offer lunch or dinner. If you are interested to hear about this, let us know.
Additionally, Mazirbe has the only store in 20km radius and it is well-stocked with household items, food, drinks and cooking essentials. It is 2 minutes away from us and if you stay longer, you can order specific items with the store directly.
IMPORTANT TOPIC: WC
Please be aware that there is no running water in the house. The sink has a quirky, old-school ingenious solution and for the rest of your needs, we have bowls and buckets with fresh water for washing-up.
You will have an outhouse next to "Mežmaļi" and access to a shared guest bathroom (toilet, shower & sink) next to the premises of our Summerhouse. This bathroom is only shared if guests are staying in the Museum "Stūrīši".
IMPORTANT TOPIC: BEACH
Our house is 5-15 minutes away from the beach, depending on which route you choose to take - the shortest distance will be more central and can get busy over summer weekends. Other routes will take you further away and you can enjoy near-seclusion.
Please note, we do not provide beach towels, please bring your own.
Mazirbe has a very rich past and has an important role as the main centre of Livonian culture. Our households are right next to the Livionian Community Centre where you will be able to learn further and see the impressive building, which served as a key point of many historical events.
Mazirbe village center is not completely rural due to the villages' history - in fact, it is one of the most developed on this side of the coast. Surrounding the village are forests, fields and the Baltic Sea beach which are all part of the Slītere National Park and are wild locations. Even in the densest tourist season, you need to really try to find more than 100 people on the beach. If you don’t mind extra couple minutes’ walk, you can find a spot where you won’t have any neighbours for 100m-1km. :)
The village is in a perfect location to explore Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre, Miķeļbāka, Ovīšu lighthouse, Slīteres lighthouse, Slīteres National Park and the surrounding villages which each are all significant to Livionian history. Košrags (& you can also include Pitrags) in Kolka direction and Sīkrags in Ventspils direction, are easily doable one-day walks.
Flowers in bloom & they bloom later than in the city. Come to us if you wish to extend the beautiful spring for a couple weeks more. The weather is usually clear and crisp. It is slightly colder than inland. The village and nature are only occupied by locals, so it’s great to see how everyone is getting their spring chores done and to enjoy complete seclusion & tranquillity.
Flowers in bloom continue, the weather during the day is warm, often even full 20+C degrees, colder at night. This is the month when the days get very long; around the 21/22 of June, summer solstice can be observed – longest day and shortest night. It truly doesn’t get dark even when the sun is set.
In honour of this, the 23 & 24th of June is Latvian Summer celebration “Jāņi”or “Līgo”, where everyone in the country has a national holiday and goes full-out on festivities. Most people leave for the countryside, to light bonfires, cook food and enjoy beer. This is a very busy time and if you wish to book for these dates, please do so well in advance. Please be ready that there will be music and laughter until early hours during this time!
We suggest to stay up all night during the solstice and to observe how both sunset and sunrise can be seen setting & rising in the Baltic Sea! That is a very rare sight.
If you are lucky, you can find wild strawberries (very small & very cute) in the surrounding forests.
Be ready for mosquitoes!
One of the warmest months in the summer. The Baltic Sea starts being warmer and, depending on the wind, the water can be very nice. However, please note that Baltic Sea is a Nordic Sea, so the water temperature will never be tropical! The weather is just divine, the sun is endless and the water is scarce. Events and festivals happening along the coast and there are many opportunities to visit crafts-markets, taste local food and learn about history.
A very bountiful time from local farmers and food producers.
This is the month when proper, wild blueberries get ready in the forest and you are more than welcome to collect and consume them (please check berry guides before doing so!). If you are lucky, you can also find wild strawberries (very small & very cute) in the surrounding forests.
Be ready for mosquitoes!
1st of August 2020 (or every year on the first August Saturday) is Livionian Cultural Celebration (Lībiešu Svētki) where many prominent people from international politics give speeches, local groups and singers put on concerts and plays. Also, a crafts market is present, where food can be bought too. Get ready that this date will be very busy in the village (cars everywhere) and the night to the 2nd of August will be occupied with music, dancing and festivities.
On the same weekend, Ventspils City Celebration takes place as well.
August in general is a month of events and festivals across the entire country, so check-out what you are interested in.
August is the most bountiful time for vegetables and produce from the locals. Also the forests start producing mushrooms (such as chanterelles) after rain. At the end of August, lingonberries start growing in the forest as well.
August is very warm, hot during the day, all of the month. From, 20th date onward (depending on season), the nights start to get slightly colder. The Baltic Sea is very warm and depending on the wind direction, you can enjoy a lovely water temp. After the 20th, swimming will start to get more suitable for those that don’t mind colder temperatures.
The fireplace starts to become useful and cosy.
The Baltic Sea is at its warmest temperature at the first half of the month. The weather is usually very tame, last days of summer, warm during the day, colder in the evenings. This is a proper mushrooming season and lingonberries are available everywhere!
This is the perfect time if you prefer to go to a holiday after the summer rush, want to enjoy peace, have bountiful food and produce, as well as a warm sea.
Definite fireplace enjoyment month!
We close the 2nd floor of The Summerhouse as it becomes impossible to keep it warm. We heat the entire first floor and guests can stay in an autumn wonderland, with Sauna. Additionally, the leaves of the surrounding nature have an amazing golden-red colour, mixed with the green pine forest. Beautiful and reflective time to visit.
We are closed. However, Mazirbe remains a beautiful winter location to visit! Especially when there is snow.
