The cottage is situated 20 kms South of the small rural gold rush town of Omeo, 7km North West of Swifts Creek and 45 minutes drive from the spectacular slopes of Mount Hotham.
Nestled in the quiet Cassilis Valley, Riley’s Creek cottage is the perfect escape whether you’re a couple wanting a romantic retreat, a group of friends wanting affordable skiing accommodation or just love the outdoors. There really is something here for everyone.
With the nearest human life over a kilometre away from where you stay, you can properly experience all of the wilderness and wildlife this area has to offer. The property consists of 90 acres of sweeping hills and valleys where you can find wildlife more abundant than anywhere else in Victoria.
The cottage itself is an enchanting place to stay, every room has a warm natural finish and is drenched in natural light.
Upon entering the cottage you’ll pass through the verandah, enclosed by ornamental grapes. You’ll be greeted by the warmth of the Coonara fireplace, the perfect mixture of heat and ambiance for your stay in the country.
The open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area is a perfect place to entertain and cook for friends, giving you the chance to utilise all of the excellent produce from in area.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all of the usual appliances including fridge, microwave, toaster, 4 burner gas cooktop and oven and a bread maker.
In addition to the 6 seater dining table, the open plan area also has a 3 seater couch, fold out 3 seater futon couch and a TV with DVD player, including a collection of DVD’s suitable for all ages.
The bathroom is situated at the the back of the cottage and has a shower, toilet and a nifty little heater attached to the wall for those chilly mornings.
The first bedroom is bright and minimal consisting of 2 single beds, a side table and a lamp.
The second bedroom is accessed at the far end of the balcony and consists of a double bed and a further 2 single beds. Out the front you have a table and chairs, perfect for enjoying your morning coffee and toast whilst looking out over the orchards in the morning sun.
Around the side of the house is the laundry with a washing machine and the quintessential hills hoist clothes line out on the lawn.
Depending on the season you can enjoy fresh fruit from the trees lining the driveway including apples, apricots, cherries, pears, peaches and nectarines. Follow the road back down to the bridge and cool down in the creek, a great place to relax and play with the kids in the summertime.
The township of Swifts Creek is like taking a step back in time and you'll find most things you'll need in the IGA Supermarket which also acts as a hardware, DVD rental and bottleshop.
Drop into the Albion Hotel for a 5-star counter meal with all of the friendly hospitality you except from a country pub.
Make sure you get your photo taken with the sculpture of the man in the dining area made entirely out of recycled shotgun shells!
A short drive away is the best skiing and snowboarding in Victoria, Mt Hotham. With more runs and lifts than any other mountain in Victoria you're bound to find endless winter amusement whether you're a group of experienced boarders or a family skiing or tobogganing for the first time.
If you have a love for Australian history you'll find some incredible examples just 30mins south of Swifts Creek in Omeo, a major town during the Gold Rush. Walks through the local area show widely untouched mines, dredges and equipment still left as it was all those years ago.
For the more adventurous, trying driving an hour south and spending a day climbing through the Bruthen caves with choices of guided cave walks all the way through to full blown adventure caving.
If birdwatching is your thing then you can look forward to dozens of native species from blue wrens and crimson rosellas through to the majestic yellow tailed black cockatoo or even a wedge tailed eagle circling overhead if you keep you eyes peeled.
If you’re a keen angler, the Tambo River and Mitta Mitta River have some of the most fertile waters in the state with brown trout guaranteed to put a bend in your rod! If getting off road and getting the 4WD muddy is more your thing then you’ll find fantastic tracks that are sure to test the mettle of even the mort experienced drivers, especially in the winter months.
