For Rail Fans: The start of one of the steepest railroad grades on the east coast starts in the back yard of the Josie Ray at Mile Post 192 of the Keystone Subdivision of the former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Sand Patch Grade between Hyndman and Sand Patch Tunnel climbs nearly 1,000 feet in elevation in just 20 miles.
Watch daily coal, container, auto-racks, and mixed freight trains climb the mountain with assistance from helpers at the rear. Also ascending trains require the assistance of dynamic breaking from helper engines on the rear, and sometimes in the middle, before being cut off near Cumberland to make the trip up the mountain again.
Amtrak’s Capitol Limited makes two passes through the backyard daily – eastbound to Washington DC mid-morning and westbound to Pittsburgh in the evening. Watch for the observation car and wave to the passengers taking in the view wail passing over Bridge No. 10 over Wills Creek.
There are many top rated Railfan locations along the Keystone Subdivision of CSXT close by including Sand Patch Tunnel, the horseshoe curve at Mance, Foley Overlook (Top 10 – Trains Magazine, 2017), Fairhope/Fall Cut Tunnel, Cumberland Narrows.
Travel 12 miles south and enjoy walking or riding your bike on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the C&O Towpath Trail. Both start at Canal Place in Cumberland. Canal Place is also the location of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad where you can ride vintage passenger cars on the old Western Maryland tracks to Frostburg. An hour drive north you will see the world famous Horseshoe Curve of the former Pennsylvania Railroad and the Allegheny Portage Railroad – both National Historic Site operated by the U.S. National Parks. Close by is The Everett Railroad with many excursion rides and specials.
Walk the former railroad bed of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad on the new trail developed in northeastern Bedford County. Although the East Broad Top does not run anymore, the Friends of the East Broad Top has events at Rockhill Furnace.
Less than a three hour drive from the Josie Ray will get you to railroad rides that include: Cass Scenic Railroad, New Tygart Flyer, Cheat Mountain Salamander, Durbin Rocket, Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad, and the Strasburg Rail Road.
This is a tiny town in Southwest PA. The favorite activities of this area are fishing, hunting, biking, and kayaking. There are two local eateries, a market, post office, library and a dollar store within easy walking distance.
