Our Hudson Valley home is our getaway from the rush of big-city life in Brooklyn - and we've set it up to be an amazing place to relax, decompress and have fun. Here are some details about the home, property, and things to do while staying:
The 6-acre property:
When we were looking at properties, I initially wanted a farmhouse in the middle of a large field. The idea of the woods made me nervous as a city dweller, but my mind changed the instant I saw this house and the land that surrounds it. Immediately around the house, there is a large lawn with lawn chairs and a fire ring. It’s big enough for games like frisbee or bocce or running around with kids. Just beyond that there is an additional 5+ acres or untouched but sparse forest land. The trees are quite tall but only have a canopy at the top, so it feels like an open, quiet, and beautiful yard, not a dark, dense, creepy forest. The land is flat and easy to walk – something we highly recommend. You’ll definitely see a variety of birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, and occasionally deer and wild turkeys will traipse through.
The home itself:
The kitchen is recently renovated with all new stainless steel appliances and comes stocked with all of the pots, pans and cooking utensils you’ll need to make a nice meal. It’s large, thoughtfully designed, and super functional. We love to cook and know the value of a great kitchen. It also has a breakfast table set for two and just off the kitchen there is a covered deck perfect for drinking a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper.
Next to the kitchen is the den flanked on two sides by large windows, furnished with an extremely comfortable couch, desk for working, and a TV and DVD player for relaxing. We wind up here at the end of every night, working our way through the entire 007 catalog.
The den leads into the living room, which we consider the show piece of the house and one of the main reasons we purchased it. The floor-to-ceiling windows that flank the A-frame roof are stunning, letting in a ton of light and allowing you to see all of the nature that brought you to the Hudson Valley. The room is large and open, housing our handmade (by my husband) walnut dining table set for 6, wood-burning stove, couches, and stereo. It’s set up as an amazing place to play a board game, read a book, have a glass of wine with friends, or stare out into nature. It’s our favorite room in the house and we’re sure it will be yours as well.
In the middle of the wall of windows, you’ll find a sliding glass door that opens out onto the largest deck of the house furnished with a large wooden table and benches and a brand-new gas grill for memorable summer meals.
Off the living room you’ll find the bedroom with en suite bathroom. There is a comfortable full-sized bed with brand new feather comforter, pillows and sheets. The room has a linen closet that houses all of the backup sheets and towels as well as a blow-up mattress that can easily be set up in the den, as well as a large closet stocked with plenty of hangers. This room is painted a beautiful deep blue and houses an amazing mid-century chandelier that we brought back from our travels to Portugal. The room has a large window as well as a sliding glass door that takes you out to a small deck and the outside. It’s super peaceful especially because it faces west so it doesn’t get a ton of direct sunlight to wake you up in the morning. The en suite bathroom is split by the hallway with a toilet and sink on one side and tub and shower on the other, which makes it easy for someone to shower while another gets ready.
Heading upstairs, you’ll find the classic A-frame loft, which we have transformed into a large open bedroom. This room is equipped with a large queen-sized platform bed centered in front of a wall of windows, and flanked by side tables with two mid-century globe lights (also brought back from our Portugal trips). There is a small desk in case you need to fire off some emails, as well as a luggage rack, and an authentic Morris chair. Across from the bed you’ll find a well-apportioned half bath with pocket door, toilet, large mirrored medicine cabinet, and marble countertop. Around the corner you’ll find a large bookcase stocked with books, magazines and a DVD collection as well as a full drum set (my husband’s).
Back downstairs next to the front door, there is another full bath, that is currently being renovated, so it’s not available yet but will be completed soon.
Continuing down another set of stairs, you’ll find a small laundry room stocked with soap, bleach, stain stick and dryer sheets for your laundry needs.
Located in the town of Milan, and a short drive from the village of Red Hook and Rhinebeck. The area is immersed in nature and countryside, surrounded by working farms where you can pick apples, pumpkins, blueberries, cherries, and plums, depending on the time of year.
As an AirBnb Plus property, our listing is only able to show photos taken by the Airbnb staff, so there are not many photos of the outdoors, or surrounding areas. Please visit our instagram account for more! @hudsonvalleyaframe
