A gorgeous, spacious and secluded retreat with a fabulous swimming/skating pond and two wood-burning stoves surrounded by 135 acres of meadow and hiking trails, and a short jaunt to miles of untouched wilderness. This 150-year-old farmhouse is ridiculously cozy in winter and can easily accommodate large groups but offers plenty of privacy. This place has it all but don't take our word for it - read the reviews and check out the pictures!
Just 2 hours drive from Manhattan, this is a magical and secluded farmhouse surrounded by 135 pristine acres in the NYC watershed protected area.
Laze away the hours on the front porch and take in the rolling fields, lush woods and apple orchard set against a forested mountain unscathed by development. Hike on the property and adjoining forest preserve, swim in our spring-fed pond, or just relax on the dock and watch the dragonflies buzz overhead. In winter, bring your ice skates and lose yourself in the fire of the two wood burning stoves. At night, sit around the campfire or try your hand at some of the board games in the living room.
The house is carefully renovated with all modern conveniences (new wooden windows, radiant heat, 2 full bathrooms and a large open-plan kitchen), without losing any of its quirky mid 19th-century charm.
Upstairs there are 4 double bedrooms, a den with a little wood burning stove and a sleeping loft with 2 double futons. Downstairs there are 2 tiny single bedrooms, a living room with another wood-burning stove, a magnificent sunroom and a large hall that also doubles as the dining room.
But its all about the outside! You will love curling up on the porch sofa and watching the spectacle of the setting sun, taking an afternoon snooze on the hammock, dining under the stars on the back patio, or hiking through the hemlock forests around the house. If it rains or its too cold out, read a book, play scrabble or watch a DVD or videocassette in the sunroom library. There is no TV, but we do have Wifi.
We are nestled within the Catskills Park, so there are lots of great trails, waterfalls and swimming holes a short drive away. Minnewaska preserve is a 30 minute drive and is truly amazing for its high clear mountain lakes, and if you want shopping, good restaurants and a bit of culture - both New Paltz and Woodstock are around 45 minutes away and have lots to offer. Ellenville is the nearest town and has a Shoprite, Peter's (a small, more select market), and drum roll please, a Walmart!
The house is very comfortable and you will find it spic and span when you come, but its not too precious! So relax, put your feet up on the sofa, bring the kids, mess up the kitchen as you cook up a gourmet meal. Make it your home away from home.
You won't want to leave!
As often as you need, we can be reached by phone and email to advise assist and troubleshoot!
Ellenville, with two supermarkets, a Walmart and a number of excellent restaurants, is the closest town and there are scores of delightful towns nearby.
Groceries: Peter’s Market is closest, in Napanoch at the junction of 209 and 55. Walmart is on 209 a little north of Naponoch and Shoprite is also on 209 a little south. Emmanuel’s is a fancier market about 40 mins away to the north on 209 in Stone Ridge.
Shopping: Woodstock, High Falls, New Paltz and Kingston are the closest towns for shopping and a bit of “culture.” There are lots of antique stores all along 209 between Stone Ridge and Wurtsboro. Accord, Rosendale and High Falls are also great for antiques. If you like the big oil paintings in the house, call the artist Eugene Gregan for a private viewing (he is 2 mins away) (phone number hidden).
Nature: The Catskill Park is all around, and some of the nicest hiking trailheads are along the Roundout Creek /Peekamoose Rd en route to Woodstock. The creek has waterfalls and swimming holes. Minnewaska Park (45 mins away) is very beautiful but busy in summer. You are free to roam the 135 acres around the house - head downhill through the fields and go for a wander. Use insect repellent and always check for ticks after hiking.
Dining: Few options but…Ellenville has Korean food and a bistro - Aroma Thyme. White Wolf in Napanoch is a bit upscale. Peekamose restaurant is an hour away but great.
Horseback Riding: there are schools in Ellenville and Kerhonkson. Try (phone number hidden)
Flying: Yep! Wurtsboro airport offers glider and plane rides. On a nice day, this is amazing! (phone number hidden).
Skiing: Belleayre and Hunter are closest and pretty good. In the summer you can bike and swim as well.
