Nestled into 200 acres of natural bush Babenorek Studio overlooks open farmland and rolling hills. Constructed from Lime rendered Straw Bales it is cool in summer and warm in winter. We are 3km from Deans Marsh & 22km from Lorne & The Great Ocean Rd.
PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR PLACE BEFORE BOOKING ESPECIALLY REGARDING SOLAR POWER AND ENVIRONMENTAL TOILET. We want you to be comfortable during your stay and suited to the accommodation that we provide. Babenorek Studio was hand built by us and a builder friend 15 years ago to live in with our 3 young children while we built our family home close by. It is constructed from Lime rendered Straw Bales so the walls are extremely well insulated making it cool in summer and warm in winter with no need for air conditioning. The use of recycled timbers and building materials is prominent through out the building. As well as being an important part of our sustainable building ethos these materials add to its rustic, homely appeal. There is an internal rendered mud brick wall and an earth floor in the living room. Upstairs is a QS bed with your choice of a feather or woollen doona and 2 single beds. Downstairs there is a gas oven for cooking and a Nectre wood fire for warmth which can also be used to boil the kettle or cook soup on. A small fridge will store enough food and drinks for a few days. A spacious bathroom with a waterless composting toilet and a shower is adjacent to the kitchen/living area. There is also an outside shower to wash the sand off when you return from the beach or cool off under on a hot night.
Deans Marsh is a small rural farming town situated on the edge of the Otway Ranges. In recent years it has developed into a creative and vibrant artistic community with Open Studio weekends, Gallery's and live music playing regularly at local Wineries and the infamous Marshian's Café. You can link up with the historic Coal Train walk at our front gate and there are many other walks and waterfalls nearby in the beautiful Otway Ranges. Restaurants, cafes and The Deans Marsh Store all offer good local food....and Dan Hunters restaurant Brae is in the nearby historic town of Birregurra if the budget allows. There are two Berry Farms a short distance away that operate seasonally. The magnificent coast and all it has to offer are a scenic 25 min drive away through tall rain forest.

The Cottage is one of the original Birregurra houses. Freshly renovated, The Cottage retains its rustic charm while providing a light, fresh, sophisticated space for your mini-break. It is perfectly located two blocks from the main street, a five minute drive to Brae, and half an hour to Lorne and Aireys Inlet.
The Cottage has three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room. It sits on half an acre with a cottage style garden for you to explore. You’re welcome to eat the fruit on the trees if in season.
Brae, of course, is a magnificent restaurant. Only 5 minutes drive away. Bookings are essential. Yield (previously Farm Foods) offer an outstanding lunch or dinner. Simons menu is creative, delicious and fiercely local. If they have cinnamon scrolls in the morning, you’d be crazy not to try one. The General Store are open early to late. Cameron can sort you out with everything from coffee to lasagne, toothpaste to ice. Artisan Bakery provide great coffee and the chicken pesto panini is unbelievably good. The Heritage Trail is a great walk or if you feel like a drive try the loop out along the Birregurra-Yeodene Road and around to the right back into Birre. Colac is only 15 minutes by car if you need a supermarket etc

Our space is a converted barn and private bathroom on our 34 acre Deans Marsh property. The property is in the north eastern foothills of The Otways, 10 minutes drive from Deans Marsh General Store. There are seemingly infinite views over Victoria's Western District to the north and north west from the barn and front lawn area. There are some Pinot Noir vines, some paddocks, and a treed gully and you're welcome to wander around the whole 34 acres.
The barn sleeps up to 5. It has a king sized bed, a bunk bed and a single trundle and is ideal for couples or families with up to three kids. There is a coffee machine with pods, bar fridge with milk, toaster and basic cutlery and crockery in the barn. So no real "kitchenette" or cooking facilities although you can use our BBQ on request. The bathroom is in the adjacent house, accessed via a covered walkway and private entrance and is exclusively yours for the duration of your stay. My husband, Andy, and I live in the main house with our 3 kids and 2 Boxers - Basil and Polly. The house is right next to the barn so you'll see and hear us from time to time. Internet access in the area is poor. We have a satellite connection but can only offer wifi access to this in emergencies because the monthly quota is so low. The only good option is Telstra mobile. Reception is poor or non-existent for other mobile carriers. Please note that we are flexible with guest numbers up to a maximum of 5 but that guests additional to the number booked are charged an extra $15 per person per night. Infants are excluded from this if you bring a portacot and bedding.
Deans Marsh is approximately half way between Winchelsea and Lorne, to the north of The Otways and around 100 minutes from Melbourne. The Deans Marsh Store is the epicentre of Deans Marsh and has good healthy food, coffee, local wines, beers and produce in addition to staples. Lorne is just 22 minutes drive from Deans Marsh and has a great beaches, restaurants and cafes and recreational attractions such as Live Wire Park. Forrest is also a hub for recreational activities such as mountain biking and bushwalking. There are wineries, berry and olive farms in Deans Marsh and the surrounding areas of Bambra and Pennyroyal and quite a vibrant dining scene in Lorne, Birregurra (Brae!) and Forrest (Bespoke Harvest, Forrest Brewing Company, etc.) And of course, The Otways themselves with superb waterfalls, open Eucalypt forest and amazing cool temperate rainforest.

Step back to a simpler time A snug cottage steeped in history A renovated retreat inspired by wonder Its own courtyard, bar and games shed Two living areas, self contained with full linen service Three themed bedrooms inspired by local legends Birregurra is Ideally situated for the perfect escape to both country and coast. A historic town located in the foothills of the Otways Ranges. Just over 1.5 hours from Melbourne. 30 Minutes to the Great Ocean Road.
The house is steeped in history. It began its life as a boot maker in 1864, and has seen many uses over the years, including butchery, surveyor’s office, and in more recent years a tea house, café and function venue and a boutique. It has recently undergone a six months renovation. Blood sweat and tears have transformed this historic building into a holiday rental that sleeps 8. Tapping into the rich history of the house and the area, the owners have poured their creativity into the update: It is more like an art project than traditional renovation. Each bed room has a theme inspired by historic local legends. It’s fun, interesting, well-orchestrated and we think it’s going to be a huge success. About The Area Birregurra is a historic town located in the foothills of the Otways Ranges. Ideally situated for the perfect escape to both country and coast. It is just over 1.5 hours from Melbourne, 30 minutes to the Great Ocean Road Lorne and a bit further to Wye River, Anglesea, Bells Beach and Apollo Bay. It's a 10 minute drive to Forrest’s World Class mountain Bike trails and Brewery. The Otway Ranges has some of Australia's best rain forest scenery: Tall trees, ancient plant life, lush ferns and cascading waterfalls makes an enthralling place to explore and bush-walk. For foodies, you can’t go past the degustation menu’s at Birregurra Farm Foods and Brae (astonishingly ranked 44 in The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants), just out of Birregurra. We can arrange transport to and from Brae. If you haven’t discovered this part of the world, we recommend it, there is so much to explore. About The House The Frederick Room A taste of the finer things Rumour has it that Birregurra’s pioneering settler Frederick Armytage enjoyed all the spoils of the good life – a game of cricket, the thrill of the pheasant hunt, travel to exotic lands that would see him garner an art collection so valuable it now resides with the National Gallery. Frederick and his family arrived from Tasmania in the 1850s, snaring countless acres across Victoria’s Western District to establish a pastoral empire of sheep stations. Not just a man of fine taste, but a visionary too – the first Australian in the colony of Victoria to send frozen meat to the motherland. His gentleman’s quarters are styled in opulent reds and golds – furnished with a 150-year old antique Grandfather chair, befitting of Frederick’s charm and standing. As you gaze into the open fireplace cradling a rich red Shiraz, you may think upon his great life, and his vision for this fertile land and the deep shipping ports which opened up trade for its produce. The Marjorie Room Soaring to new heights She was once described as the ‘greatest living dramatic soprano’ of her time. Marjorie Laurence was born in Deans Marsh in 1907, the fifth of six children – a girl who after listening to gramophone records of Nellie Melba, could think of no greater pursuit than singing on the world stage. Marjorie would go on to flourishing heights as an opera singer of bright, ringing vibrato – most famous for singing Wagner’s operas. A wealthy patron built her The Globe theatre at Winchelsea which still survives today. Marjorie’s Room is designed as a homage to the great singer’s lyrical beauty. Steeped in romance, it opens onto a deck along Lavender Lane – just the spot to sip tea under the dappled light of the Silver Birch trees. The Daisy Room Lavish living for bovines Oh, to be a cow in Birregurra. Daisy – the happiest cow in the district will tell you. This here is lavish living for bovines. Lush, rolling green pastures to graze on: Your fill of sunshine and rainfall with a backdrop of ancient forests towering with Mountain Ash and Myrtle Beech trees. Home to one of the country’s richest patches of dark volcanic soil, the fertile grounds of Birregurra make for one of the finest grazing corners of the country. Thousands of fat, contented cows just like Daisy live their best life here. You’ll see her on the wall – ‘Milkshake’ – Daisy the cow jumping for joy on a trampoline. Put your brain into neutral, set your mood to chill, in a room designed for pure, unadulterated laziness. Two bunks. A shelf of games. Comfy bean bags. Chew, sleep, dream, repeat. The Mud Room Rustic ablution The daily bathing ritual goes old school. A handmade corrugated iron shower. Wood panelled walls. Colonial windows overlooking a sun-kissed rear courtyard with an iron bathtub to let you bathe al fresco. Even an outdoor toilet block to revive the tradition of the outdoor dunny. Just no red back spiders hiding behind the cistern. The Bootmaker’s Shed Kick off your shoes Through the big barn doors, it’s time for a shindig. Kick off your shoes in a games room named after Birregurra’s longstanding bootmaker, James Townsend. He’s the craftsman who built this very Tea House in 1862. James was a prominent figure in the town – the local boot-maker who also trained horses for the race track. Only fitting a man who worked with his hands, who loved horses, and racing should be the patron saint of the Games Room. Crack open a cold one at the bar. Challenge the kids to a game of pool. Take to the stage for a long awaited solo performance. Tell ghost stories around the fire pit. Or simply lay back in the hammock under the dappled light of the oak tree. The Orchard Sweet country delights Stroll the fruit grove laden with oranges, almonds, olives and mandarins. A private little patch of The Tea House. On original Cobb & Co coach stop Brimming with country delights. PRICING Birregurra Tea House is priced to make the property attractive to both smaller families and also groups of up to 8. Big groups take much longer to clean-up after and use more electricity, water and firewood, so we have set up a sliding price scale. There is a flat rate for up to 4 guests. Each guest above this is an additional $50 per night – this way small groups aren’t excluded and it covers the additional cleaning and utility costs for larger groups. A flat rate works well for some properties but are trialling this system to make it less expensive for smaller groups. MANCHESTER Linen and towels are provided. Beds will be made up on arrival to the number of guests specified in the booking. If you have instagram, you can follow both our guests and our personal stays at @dufflebird_getaways
While Birregurra is inland, it is only half an hour drive to Lorne. Spend days at the beach on the Great Ocean Road then wash off the sand in the mudroom before an outdoor dinner in the courtyard. Just out of town is the world famous Brae Restaurant, foodies can spend some time exploring the amazing farm gates, growers and producers, breweries and winemakers of the Otway Harvest Trail. We can arrange your transport to and from Brae or Bespoke Harvest. The Otway Ranges has some of Australia's best rainforest scenery: Tall trees, ancient plant life, lush ferns and cascading waterfalls makes an enthralling place to explore and bushwalk. The nearby township of Forrest has become a hub for mountain bike activity in the region, with purpose built mountain bike trails and a series of associated eclectic events throughout the year. It also has a boutique brewery, quirky general store and an awesome degustation restaurant- Bespoke Harvest.

Take a step back in time, to bygone era, where life was simpler, where people spent time with dignified entertainment and life seemed to have more space and time. Welcome back to the great age of Steam. The train was used as a workshop, when the original owner was building the house next door (also a Dufflebird property, Otway's Loft). In 2015 we renovated the derelict carriage to the vaguely steam-punk style holiday accommodation. It is available year round and can sleep up to 6 guests.
When we started renovating, the carriage did not have enough intact to restore it, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced. It took nine months to renovate the train from a pretty ragged start. Almost every surface had to have something done to it, and we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything over 100 years will have its challenges, but this was exceptional. It was opened for guests in July 2015. It is still a work in progress, there is a lot more to do before it reaches our vision, but we have been astounded by it's popularity. Special features include : - Can sleep 6 but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below. - 3 Bedrooms. Two in a single compartment with a double compartment master bed room. Two Queen beds, two thin train singles. - Full linen service with beds made up for you on arrival. - Bathroom with shower - Open plan kitchen/living room - Wood fire box heater with wood supply included - Full small kitchen with stove, oven, sink, fridge and cupboards - WiFi - Italian Stove top coffee maker and French Press (plunger) - Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away. - Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but a clever dog could easily escape. NO TV. There is a stereo, books and board games. There is not a washing machine, nor dryer. Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were king! In the late 1800's trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to share it with guests. If you have instagram, you can follow both our guests and our personal stays at @dufflebird_getaways
Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Ten Things To Do •Walk around Lake Elizabeth or take the platypus tour. •Go mountain biking on Victoria’s best trail network. With great regret we no longer offer the four free bikes. The expectation of having bikes in good working order was a service we could not reliably offer without living nearby and maintaining them between guests. Bring your own mountain bikes or you can hire bikes at Forrest Hire Bikes, two minutes walk away. •Visit Otways Fly and zip line (Longest and highest rainforest sky walk in the world ) •Bushwalk to waterfalls and Redwood Forest. (Hopetoun Falls, Triplet Falls, Beauchamp Falls, Stevenson Falls). •Forrest Historic Walk •Visit local Wineries and Berry Farms •Forrest Brewery for lunch •Forrest Guesthouse for weekend degustation lunch or dinner. •Brae Restaurant •Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Quiet semi rural location - close to town - 10 min riverside walk to cafes, shops, historic sites.
The main photo is one of the three rooms that we have available. The guest rooms are situated towards one end of our comfortable neat relatively modern home. The house is situated on 5 acres, close (but not too close) to the edge of town. It's only a 1 minute walk to the Barwon river with a short shady walk to shops.
Our home faces onto a small natural reserve and is only 1 minute walk from the Barwon river and walking tracks and cycle paths. Our neighbors are few and far between but they are always happy to stop and chat. Local pool is only a 5 minute walk away. Pool is open 12-6pm every day in summer. BRAE restaurant (famous for its chef and organic cuisine) is 20 minutes drive. Major beaches Bells Beach, Point Addis, Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne are within 35 minutes drive. Geelong with its waterfront, shopping, arts and entertainment precincts is only 35 minutes drive from here. We recommend people take time to look around Geelong before heading out to Winchelsea. From here visitors can drive the Great Ocean Road in a day - from Torquay to Peterborough and back - having time to take in the major attractions - Erskine Falls, Apollo Bay, Johanna Beach, Otway Fly, Cape Otway Lighthouse (and its Koalas), the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. Some people just keep going to Warrnambool and beyond - but for those with limited time this is a good place to start, stop and rest, before heading off to Ballarat or back to Melbourne.
