In the 19th and until the beginning of the 20th century the island had about 25 thousand inhabitants, it was a fishing and sponge fishing center, it had developed a shipbuilding industry capable of building around five hundred sailboats a year. Today, the hospitable inhabitants are approaching three thousand and in recent years most have turned to tourism. As soon as the ship from Rhodes approaches the port we see the unique architecture with the colorful neoclassical, reminiscent of a movie set. From the Port Clock in Gialos we go right and passing by NOS beach, we will end up in the port of Nimborio, which is today a small settlement. It was called Emporion, because it was an important place of trade. The archeological findings of the area are important, such as the supernatural (about three meters) marble pig statue, located in Constantinople, as well as the "tombstone of Symi", Ionic work of about 520 BC. He represents a man in a robe and a spear, almost life-size. Altar dedicated to the god Apollo and the Muse Ourania were also found. Ruins of an early Christian basilica were also found near the sea and under the church of Agia Irini. Later, three chapels were built on the site of the three-aisled Basilica. In the same area were also found arched basements, the Twelve Caves, which probably served as painting and sculpture workshops, while others consider it a burial complex of antiquity.
