This paved trail is a converted rail line corridor that runs from Slidell to downtown Covington, with equestrian trails paralleling portions of it. Along this 27-mile stretch, you’ll see quiet bayous teeming with wildlife (look out for alligators and amazing amounts of birds), remodeled railroad trestles, pedestrian bridges, and the charming towns of Mandeville and Abita Springs.

The Tammany Trace was built along the abandoned Illinois Central Railroad. It is a 31 mile biking and hiking trail that spans from Slidell to Covington, LA. It has a lot of scenic and park areas along the way.

Louisiana's only rails-to-trails conversion, the 31-mile Trace winds through the Northshore, a paved ribbon connecting five communities interspersed with lovely green space. The path offers all who ride, walk or even rollerblade it, a way to experience both the towns and the natural beauty that so enhances the quality of life on the Northshore. Originally a corridor for the Illinois Central Railroad, the Trace now is an earth-friendly hike and bike trail stretching from downtown Covington, through Abita Springs, Mandeville, and Lacombe and ending in Slidell. In 2017, the Tammany Trace was inducted into the Rails-to-Trails Hall of Fame.
