E­J National Palace of Culture (NDK) Referred to as NDK: En-De-Ka. Built in 1981 to mark the country’s 13th centennial, it is Sofia’s most prominent modern landmark, housing concert halls, exhibition space, offices, cafés, restaurants and more. Throughout the year (except August) it hosts a variety of cultural events from classical to avant garde; concerts, film festivals, art exhibits, fashion shows and trade fairs as well as major conferences. Hall 1, the largest of 12 halls, seats approximately 4000 and is used for major concerts, including international pop stars, as well as movie premieres. There are several live music clubs within the complex, but these are listed separately. The smaller halls 8 and 9 host classical recitals or chamber music. The lounge is fairly basic and performances are in Bulgarian only but this does not necessarily matter for young children who get caught up in the general atmosphere of excitement.Qul. Gen. Sofia Live Club One of the most happening places in Sofia, Sofia Live Club is a large spacious venue with a different band every night, playing anything from jazz and blues to soul and salsa. A­P­G­E­L­J­W Sofia National Opera and Ballet Built in 1909, the interior of the opera, even though it cannot match Vienna or Prague, still evokes the glamour of that era. E­J Sofia Tech Park First science and technology park in Bulgaria, opened in 2016 and in addition to providing office space for various ‘tech’ companies it has a large multifunctional hall/event centre – the John Atanassov Hall.Qbul. W­K Studio 5 Lovely intimate venue with live music/entertainment nearly every night; on weekends often 2 gigs one early at 19:00, the other at 22:30. National palace of culture was opened in 1981 in celebration of Bulgaria’s 1300th anniversary. Its halls are well designed and equipped with comfortable seats. Many world famous singers, musicians and dancers have performed here over the years The National Palace of Culture was initiated by a suggestion of Lyudmila Zhivkova, daughter of the communist leader of the former People’s Republic of Bulgaria Todor Zhivkov). Internally, the National palace of culture has a unified style, employing an octagonal motif and heavy, dark colours. Large bright murals depicting historical figures and events cover the main wall of many of the smaller halls. In July 2005, the National Palace of Culture was proclaimed the best congress centre in the world for the year by the International Organization of Congress Centres. It has an area of 123,000 m² on eight floors and three underground levels. The National Palace of Culture has 13 halls and 15,000 m² of exhibition area, a trade centre and a car park. The main hall can seat over 3,000 people. Sofia International Film Festival, an annual film festival takes place here.
