Food Scene

Small but lively local cafe-bar which changes a simple menu daily, choice of two mains (incl. vegetarian) plus sides and dessert. Good people-watching from front terrace during good weather.

Wonderful, local, independent cafe-bar, open late and opposite the equally charming Hulme garden centre. Lots of character and a slightly hippy-ish vibe, tasty food with menu updated regularly.

Although a UK chain, Wagamama creates fresh, authentic pan-Asian food delivered to shared, communal tables for a reasonable price. Fast, tasty and never very long to wait for seating.

Drinks & Nightlife

My favourite local bar within walking distance of house, specialising in UK real ales, beers and international lager. Popular with musicians and artists, many of whom live locally.

Although not specifically a gay-bar, it is gay-owned and therefore especially popular with the GLBT community, especially women. Unusual building, a hybrid of late Victorian and ultra-modern concrete.

Everything Else

Biased - I work here, but have also been attending for 20 years! The city's central hub for contemporary art, independent cinema, exhibitions, bookshop, bar, restaurant and a magnet for creative folk.

Premier hipster-hangout, plenty of curled moustaches and band members masquerading as bar staff, but reliable American diner food and a gin bar upstairs. Cocktails on the high side but 2-for-1 offers.
