Kalkan To Do List

Gezilecek yerler

fantastic must do. TAKE WATERSHOES or sturdy trecking sandals. You can buy watershoes there. Awesome thin high walkway to the water, It’s freezing walking through the base bowl, stupidly busy, unsteady under foot, but stick with it as crowds disappear the further in you go til tjere is only a trickle of people well into the gorge. We got to the very end so maybe an hours worth of trekking through the water, deepest bit is thigh deep Then fab sofas lunch with swing chair dangling over river. Finished with doughnut inflatables along the river. that bit was a bit tame tbh but as we were there….

Gizlikent waterfalls , about 1 mile after saklikent, lovely place for a cool walk. Many steps down but so worth it! They have cafes and souvenir type shops at the top.

Kekova - either for boat trip or just to look about. Drive through HUGE poly tunnel farming villages. You need to be patient as Parking can be tricky. I can’t recommend anywhere as we parked at our agents family home. Glorious rustic small traditional harbour. Meander through the small village of very steep, stepped hills of shops and cafes, I believe there is a castle ruins at the top but we didn’t get up there. It’s like stepping back in time

Kas Ampthitheatre - we went before sunrise. You don’t see the spectacular glow of Sun cresting as it rises behind a mountain but you do sit there alone and in silence watching the world go from dark to light and then observe the light as it starts shining on the opposite island. You might get a glorious sunset from there but we haven’t done that. Nb nowhere is open for brekkie at that time so Pack a picnic breakfast, or just mooch about and see the harbour and town before the crowds

Green lake @ Gombe - (edit, see comments below) we went wrong and started from Kas but turned out better as took an insanely bendy mountain road, stunning mountain scenery. Through a couple of rustic villages. Authentic rural Turkey. Loved the drive out. The lake itself is a bit of a baron non event. Eerie green colour and worthy of a stop and look, and peer through the door crack of the abandoned restaurant as you can still see intact inside and you can hear the eerie wind whistling through it and the floorboards creaking and crunching. Then back to Kalkan on a different road so a round-trip of scenery. I would say the lake was not worthy of a trip but if you like to explore the mountains then it’s a must do. Caution: there are online pictures showing green lakes as lush and green and full of vegetation, boat trips, waterfalls but this is not the 40 minutes from Kalkan Green Lake

Patara beach - we went and very quickly left. Very interesting drive to the beach along a road strewn with fenced off ruins on either side. Enormous car parks of mostly unmanaged ground where you dump car under trees etc. In the day you pay for parking. Looong walk to beach. Looong beach with swarms of people (if you like that sort of thing, I don’t), A nice restaurant there, Sand Dunes, estuary bit into the sea You can buy shade obvs. In the daytime it was my hell but could be another’s heaven. I plan to go back in the evening this time and really enjoy it

Patara dunes for sunset. Instead of driving all the way to the beach you turn right into Gelemis and follow the road through the village up the hill and keep going. It'll go into a track and eventually to a stop. Find a spot on a clear evening and enjoy. Absolutely stunning

Kapatus beach - is the small cove on the main road at a small gorge on a sharp bend heading east out of Kalyan. It’s lovely but only if you get there silly early or evening. Clean, tranquil, cosy, at the mouth of the gorge literally on the main road. On street parking easy in quiet times, coffee shop and therefore shady seating at busy times. Lots of steps to get down to it. Def worth a trip if you have a car and want a quick peaceful easy dip in the sea away from crowds (but only very early or late)

Museum of Lycian Civilizations near Demre harbour. This is a fantastic place. Well worth visiting. It was a port many years ago now a museum. Lots of ruins and history. It's past Kas, about 1 and half hour drive from kalkan.

Pick your own fish and pay for them in the market. Get a waiter from one of the restaurants to help you. They will give you starters, wine etc and cook your fish for you. Simply the best! Tasty, good price and amazing atmosphere. A must for a night out!
