The place I go to for brunch any day of the week. It has warm and friendly staff, loads of great menu options the cater well for vegan or gluten free if you need it. Quintessential Freo vibes with the vintage furniture and the outdoor courtyard. A part of the warehouse is also a gallery filled with local artists work. If you’re around on a Friday morning go down and enjoy the live jazz.

Small bars

It's like going below the decks of an 19th century pirate ship. A haven for seafarers, slinging rum from 4 pm weekdays and noon Friday to Sunday. Bar snacks are an unlimited supply of peanuts.

A jungle-themed rum and coffee bar for laid back vibes. Open every day, Jungle Bird offers up Caribbean delights like jerk chicken with Jamaican rice and peas and saltfish fritters with West Indian hot sauce.  The bar is well stocked with boutique rums, whiskeys and dark spirits, as well as killer craft beers and a few wines. If you ask me, the cocktails are where it's at.

Freo's got a new gem, Ode To Sirens, a 70s vinyl bar in the old P&H Hotel. Inside, it's retro heaven with vinyl records and vintage decor. The bar serves classic drinks and Greek-inspired bites. A must-visit for a chill, retro vibe.

Best views – with a beer in hand

Sit by the water and watch the iconic container ships go by. Listen to good tunes with a locally brewed beer in hand while the Freo doctor cools you down. Don't forget your sunglasses.

Normally I'd look right past a Hotel, but head upstairs and the rooftop bar gives you a scenic view of Fremantle out to the ocean. The National Hotel sits at the entrance to the heritage listed West End neighbourhood and has been faithfully restored to its original grandeur.

Best for dinner

Specialising in unique and delicious eats with an emphasis on flavourful curries. I highly recommend the Chef's Choice menu, let them bring you plate after plate of delicious fare. You’ll be happy to soak up every last bit (with some paratha) in this stunning spot with max arty vibes. They usually have space for walk-ins, or if you're organised you can book a table.

Emily Taylor tells a story of character and immense flavour arising from those who braved a journey to the unknown. Expansive, lively, a world within a world, unseen from the street, enter the colour and culture of Emily Taylor set within tall limestone walls. A fresh, architectural treasure of small tables through to communal dining alongside the vibrancy of high tables and bar service. Walk-ins welcome at any time. Bookings happily taken.

Around the corner from Poets Harbour (go through the laneway to Pakenham Street). Bread in Common is in a lofty warehouse space making artisanal breads with wood-fired, volcanic-rock ovens. Try the duck fat potatoes. OMG.

Hands down our favourite place in Freo for a cosy dinner. Brilliant wine list, service that feels like you’re at a friend’s house and the decor is on point.

It's worth visiting for the book store alone, but of course they have wonderful exhibitions showing all the time. Over the summer they have free live music from 2pm – 4pm in the Front Garden. Get there early and settle in for the afternoon. Bring a rug and picnic (no BYO alcohol) or enjoy tasty treats from the food vendors and bar on-site.
