Sightseeing and things to do

There are so many things to see and do in Oxford that this section could go on forever, so here is just a selection of things nearby. There are some maps and guidebooks in the flat to help you find more throughout the city and environs.
Just up the road from the flat (ca 5 minutes walk) is one of the largest of the Oxford Colleges, founded in 1525. Various areas are open to the public (although check during the pandemic). The college has an important collection of Old Masters painting and drawings, housed in a specially built Picture Gallery. Its chapel doubles as the Cathedral for the City of Oxford, with organ and choral recitals usually open to the public (although again check in pandemic times). The Dining Hall of the college was used as the template for that of Hogwarts in the 'Harry Potter' movies. It also contains many important portraits of former students and fellows of the College, such as John Locke, W.E. Gladstone, W.H. Auden, and Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll).

A lovely wide meadow area by the River Thames, just across the bridge from the flat. In the Medieval period these meadows covered the entire area, and Folly Bridge was first built in order to allow people to cross them from the city centre at St Aldates down to what is now the Abingdon Road.

Serving Oxford since 1958, Salters is a family firm offering punt hire (punting being a quintessential Oxbridge tradition), river cruises, and more; it was from a pier at Salters that Lewis Carrol set off with the Liddell children, telling them the stories that became Alice in Wonderland

Food scene and shopping

Vibrant shopping centre about a five minute walk from the flat. On the top floor is a series of bars and restaurants with great views over the city. (Note the dot on the map is at the north entrance, which might look a bit far away, but this place is really close to Folly Bridge, just a 5-10 minute walk from the flat if you come in from the south. Turn left along the first main road after the bridge as you go towards the city centre, go up to the next traffic light (with pedestrian crossing), and you'll see the complex on your right. There's an entrance next to the John Lewis, and then you're right in the heart of it.)

Selling Alice in Wonderland souvenirs today, this shop was frequented by the real Alice (Liddell) and Lewis Carroll wrote it into 'Alice Through the Looking-Glass' as the Old Sheep Shop - Tenniel's illustration in the book shows the interior of the shop as it was in the Victorian era

Restaurants and cafes nearby

This restaurant is right next door to the flat, and is perfect for special occasions. It is 'pricey' - but not over-priced. I've been twice with family, and we very much enjoyed it, plus I felt we'd got well what I paid for: excellent food, excellent service, and a stunning location. In the summer they do cruise dinners on the River Thames, which are surprisingly affordable. I'm definitely going to check out the river cruises this summer!

Although small, it will have most of the basics you might need, from snacks and home cooking (with vegan and gluten-free options), to wine and beer, toiletries and minor medical supplies. Essentially, it stocks a smaller cross-section of what any larger grocery store in the UK would stock.
