Recreation

Hailed as the 2nd most climbed mountain in the world (right behind Mount Fuji)! At 3,165 ft. high, Mount Monadnock is the most prominent peak in southern New Hampshire and offers expansive views at the summit stretching from the Boston skyline all the way to Mount Washington. There are several trails that will take you to the top, but the most popular route up starts at the Monadnock State Park Headquarters in Jaffrey (45 minute drive). There you’ll find plenty of parking, a visitor center, and a park store. Entrance to the park costs $5. Head up to the summit on the White Dot Trail (two miles; about two hours), and descend on the White Cross Trail (2.2 miles; about two and a half hours). This hike makes for a great day-long adventure, especially in Autumn when the air is crisp and the leaves are changing. Don't forget to pack a sack lunch to enjoy at the top!

A fun place to explore in nearby Chesterfield with historical ruins, a pond, and hiking trails. The area is named after Antoinette Sherri, a famously eccentric woman who was a costume designer and threw glamorous parties back in the 1920's at her castle in the forest. The castle was later abandoned and destroyed by a fire in 1962. All that remains today are ruins of the foundation and the stone staircase. It is a good spot to take photos and enjoy a walk in the woods. The Ann Stokes loop trail is a popular 2.3 mile hike with scenic views at the top, and along Indian Pond.
