Wetlands were created to become habitats for native species including threatened species such as the Blanding’s turtle. These habitat restoration projects have helped to take the pressure off endangered species here in southern Ontario. The property boasts a 350 ft. boardwalk providing rare access and a close-up view of the Turkey Point Marsh that borders the UNESCO Long Point World Biosphere Reserve. Another prominent viewing platform near the welcome center provides the perfect location to enjoy over 15,000 acres of marshland, inner Long Point Bay and Lake Erie – a spectacular vista. LPIHT operates in a sustainable manner towards the waterways and ecosystems we traverse, evident in our water routes, the low environmental impact vessel we use, (25-foot pontoon boat) or even the engine which powers us (4stroke) and our new electric motor to really experience the Long Point marsh with less noise. LPIHT additionally keeps to a maximum of 8-10 guests per tour, keeping our footprint on this beautiful area to a minimum while at the same time providing our guests a more personable experience. Experiences we create on Tour: LPIHT is proud to offer natural history tours of the inner bay and lake marsh systems. Through a combination of beautiful locations, conversations on flora and fauna, geology, glaciations, invasive species and other key notes we will show you the complex systems in play, within the marsh, all working together to provide the many roles it serves to both wildlife and humans. The Heritage Village is an open-air museum that includes restored or reconstructed buildings and structures, including the 19th century Backhouse Homestead, Backhouse Mill, church, carriage shop, barn with agriculture equipment, drive shed with buggies and wagons, two log houses, schoolhouse, saw mill and farm and 19th century industrial equipment. The Museum building includes exhibits about the Long Point Area, 19th century period business displays, and an exhibit about the shipwrecks of Lake Erie at Long Point. It also features a fully lifeguarded pool.
