If you are wanting a grungy feeling bar with live music, check out Les Bon Temps. Definitely a neighborhood bar, this dark and musky bar has a neat feeling to it, with cheap beer. Trivia: find the “Lee Harvey Oswald sat here” plaque. He lived just down the street on Magazine St. and this was his watering hole.

Cocktails? Don’t call the guys and gals working there bartenders; call them mixologists. Its probably a more accurate description, anyways. Tell them your mood and your palate, and they will whip you up a special cocktail. In the evenings, sometimes they can require long pants...lame.

Delachaise is a good wine bar with a kitchen in the back serving up a great menu (shrimp clemenceau; french fries cooked in duck fat). The wine selection is very solid. The only downside is the narrowness of the place and the angry bald server, but if a nice evening, try to catch a table outside along St. Charles.

A popular wine bar with a Mad Men feeling, this place is great. Head there for a night out in a beautifully restored shotgun home. And, if you need a snack, get the fries with Aioli sauce. Some of the best fries in the city.

If there is one thing New Orleans seriously lacks, its outdoor bar seating. One of the few places with a great outdoor patio is the Bulldog. WIth over a 100 beers on tap, this place is where its at for ale on a nice day (or night). Make sure to take a picture of the beer tap fountain.

Located on St. Charles, Avenue Pub is open 24-hrs, so no need to rush. This place has a great selection of beer on tap, with an upstairs balcony seating. Building looks rough on the outside, and its a little rough on the inside, but its somehow very pleasant.

Let’s be honest: this bar is on Bourbon St and any bar pretty much gets the job done. But Absinthe House is one of the older and more popular bars on Bourbon closest to Poydras. The business cards lining the walls is pretty fun to read, also.

Laffite’s is known for being the oldest bar in the United States. You certainly won’t find it well-lit, as it only uses natural light (sunlight and candles) to illuminate the bar.

Home of the Hurricane (and headache). Everyone needs to check this place out, but everyone must check out the dueling piano bar. Two pianists play requests while the drunk audience sings along

Again, located on Bourbon Street, this bar is a great late night spot to practice your karaoke in front of a large audience. If you don’t want to practice, enjoy the rest of the character’s who get up there.

One of the few cocktail bars in the Quarter, Bar Tonique’s mixologists are some of the best. If you are there, ask for Mark. He can give you the history of every drink. And if you are lucky, we’ve been told Brad Pitt hangs out there. We’ve never seen him.

If you are looking for a place to drink some beer in Mid City, find Bayou Beer Garden. It has a nice selection of beers, but a better back patio. If the weather isn’t too bad, this is a good place to check out.
