Food Scene

This is one of the best restaurants in town. They serve excellent seafood and sushi. All of their fish is gulf-to-table: caught by their own fishermen in the gulf and shipped directly to the restaurant, the freshest fish you can get this far north in the state. Chuck's is named after the owner's father, Charles Morgan, who was a civil rights attorney in Birmingham in the 1960's.

This fun and casual restaurant has a funky atmosphere and a simple menu: 5 entrees, 5 appetizers, 5 craft beers, 5 red wines, 5 white wines. (I recommend the pork chop!) They're open for dinner 7 nights a week, lunch on Fridays, and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays, a jazz band plays during brunch. Five is open later than most other sit-down restaurants in the city.

Truly a local's spot. It's tucked away in a strip mall off of 15th Street. Though it's not much to look at from the outside, they brew the best beer in town. Bo, the owner, is usually around for a fun conversation or a game of Mario Kart on the N64.

The swimming hole at Hurricane Creek park is a local's favorite in the spring and summer. It's a little bit off the beaten path, but worth the short 15 minute drive. The creek water stays cool and clear, and great hiking trails wind through the woods along both banks.
