Summersweet Gardens Nursery at Perennial Pleasures is a retail and mail-order nursery located in East Hardwick, Vermont, a beautiful part of the state known as the North East Kingdom. The nursery, greenhouse and display gardens are sited on the sunny fields behind our family home, an 1840s brick house at the edge of the village. We grow over 900 varieties of flowers, herbs and shrubs, specializing in heirloom and medicinal plants, and have a special fondness for phlox. An eclectic gift shop, specializing in summer hats, is located in the old wooden extension, and a seasonal tea-room serves English Cream Teas in the display garden or conservatory. The nursery and gift shop are open from early May to mid-September, 10-5 Wednesday through Sunday. The Tea Garden is open from 11:00 to 4:00, roughly Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. We are closed on Mondays, and Tuesday, until further notice. For schedule and holidays, see Calendar & Events.

he Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand puppet shows for children, the concerns of the first productions were rents, rats, police, and other problems of the neighborhood. More complex theater pieces followed, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were equal partners. The puppets grew bigger and bigger. Annual presentations for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Memorial Day often included children and adults from the community as participants. Many performances were done in the street. During the Vietnam War, Bread and puppet staged block-long processions and pageants involving hundreds of people.
