Once David Chang's right hand, Peter Serpico came to Philly to open up shop on South Street. His eponymous restaurant has since proven to be one of the most innovative and beautiful spots around. Serpico displays a deft touch with unusual vegetable dishes like a mushroom tartare with fingerling potato chips and turns lasagna on its head with chicken, snails, and hazelnut pesto.

When it comes to essentials in Philly, roast pork sandwiches top the list. And it’s hard to top the version at John’s Roast Pork, a long-running, no-frills James Beard Award winner deep in South Philly. Those in the market for a cheesesteak won’t go wrong with that option either.

Standing with 887 feet of armor-plated steel, the 45,000-ton Battleship New Jersey dominates not only the New Jersey waterfront, but also American naval history. Winding through tight, narrow companionways, visitors get a firsthand look at the communication center, as well as the officers’ and enlisted men’s mess halls and sleeping quarters.
