Great pub for Sunday lunch- about a 7 min drive from the Goat Shed along the old Fosse way Roman Road, close to Castle Combe. High vaulted wooden converted barn, with cosy wood burner. It's also dog friendly!

Beautiful picturesque pub that used to be an old mill - a 6 minute drive towards Chippenham from the Goat Shed. The gardens have a mill stream running through - thoroughly recommended for bite to eat or drink on a warm evening. Can get busy so if you want to eat inside you'll need to book via thier website , or expect to wait for service outside. There is a really lovely circular walk you can make from here- Ask me for details..

A great pub about 5 miles north of the Goat Shed. If you have brought bikes along, then (once the 100m of A420 is out the way) it's a really nice quiet bike ride, and who doesn't love a bike ride that has a pub at the end!

The Avon Gorge Hotel is great find. On a summers day there is nowhere better to enjoy a gin and tonic than on the sun terrace, looking out over the gorge towards the bridge. It does get busy, so find a spot and get the other half to queue for a drink!

A little off the beaten track, this wonderful pub is a favorite with university students and lectures alike. It remains true to tradition, with dark wooden pews, no music and a limited but tasty menu. The garden is sheltered and very pretty, adorned with hanging baskets and raised beds- and electric heaters!

A great pub with a fantastic view out over the Box Valley and Solsbury Hill (yes - the one Peter Gabriel wrote his famous song about - just after leaving Genesis) . If you are on your way out of Bath, over Landsdown, or taking the park and ride, stop here for a drink and a bite in the garden. My children also call it the Roly Poly Down The Hill Pub on account of the steep embankment. Pizzas are served outside at a reasonable price, inside the food is good, but a little pricey. All in all though you can't whack that view!

Our local independent convenience store - recently relocated across the road following a devastating fire in 2022. It's less than a 2 min walk from the Goat Shed, and opens 9am until 7pm - Monday to Saturday, and 9am till 12pm on Sundays. It has a great selection of fresh and frozen produce, as well as a fine selection of cheeses, cold meats, fruit, vegetables, beer and wine. Central Stores stocks a wide range of the famous Marshfield Ice cream - often new flavours are trialed in the shop. The also sell Newspapers

City/town information

Bristol is a fantastic city to visit. It only takes 20 mins from the Goat shed. I would suggest heading over to Clifton, and around the harbourside - Park the car in Trenchard St, or West End NCP for ease. One day isn't really enough to take in Bristol - so book in a couple of days to ensure you do it justice!

Bath is a staggeringly beautiful city, nestled in the valley, surrounded by masses of historic Georgian architecture. Best to park in the enormous Charlotte st car park, or in the multistorey on Walcot Street, if it's not too busy. It's often quicker to head into town using Landsdown, passing the Bath race course. Ask James for more info. Alternatively the park and ride, also in Landsdown is a great alternative - get upstairs on the bus for a great view as you decent into Bath!

Sightseeing

This is a must for any visit to Bristol - and it's free for pedestrians! Walk over one side, cross over at the Leigh Woods end and return, getting great views of both sides. Marvel at the 90m drop to the river Avon in the middle. Fun Fact - the Leigh Wood's abutment was enforced by the older more "experienced" Thomas Telford, (who designed the Menai Suspension bridge), because he did not believe Brunel could span the Avon gorge without it. Modern calculations proved Brunel right, but the massive cost of the abutment crippled the construction progress for many years

Situated up the hill from the suspension bridge, this old windmill was transformed into a camera obsura in Victorian times. Largely unchanged, sightseers gather around a white dish in a darkened room, as a spooky, silent image of the outside surroundings is projected onto the dish - it's cheap and it's cool! Worth a visit. Don't forget to have a go on the slippy rocks between the camera obscura and the bridge. Generations of bums have polished the rocks into super slippery slide that the kids love!

Situated half way up Park street, this is a lovely park to chill out in the sun, with amazing views out over the harbour and city beyond. If you dare, climb up the Cabot Tower (free) for even better views, but it's super narrow! Take a bag of nuts with you. The local squirrels are really tame and will take the nuts from your hand..

Something a bit different.. Cotswolds airport is the retirement home of many commercial airliners. Last year, with the demise of the British Airways fleet of 747s, they all came to Cotswold airport and all 12 were parked up - an impressive sight. Perhaps one to visit if you are passing by, and have time for a coffee..

SS great Britain is a great visit for all the family. Brunel's ship was the first steam ship to have a propeller, and plied the seas for many years. After being wrecked and abandoned in the South Atlantic, she was towed back to the very dry dock where she was built, and diligently restored.

It' wouldn't be a trip to Bath without a visit to the Royal Crescent. There is a museum at Number one, that shows how a townhouse would look in Georgian times. There is a smart hotel and spa at the other end, but the Goat shed is much nicer - you chose well! Walk along from the crescent onto The Circus

Designed by John Wood, the plane trees in the middle were planted later on and hindered views of the houses opposite. It's thought the phrase "can't see the woods for the trees" was coined as a result. Nick Cage purchased number 7 for a cool 4 million, but he took down the house number once everyone got wind!
