Food scene

Every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, the Joshua Tree Farmer’s Market takes over downtown Joshua Tree. The fruit and vegetable selection from local growers and farmers is fresh and delicious. You’ll also find flowers and even meat, fish and prepared foods. Aside from the fruits and veggies, the Greek food makes a great grab n’ go lunch.

You can’t visit Joshua Tree without heading up to Pioneertown and popping into Pappy & Harriets. This place is legendary. Big space, good food. But most of all, live music. And not just great local bands. The stage has been blessed by Paul McCartney, Eric Burdon, Queens of the Stone Age, Rufus Wainwright, The Donnas, Grizzly Bear, Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, Leon Russell, Arctic Monkeys, Daniel Lanois, Band of Horses, Alvvays, Sean Lennon, Billy Corgan and the Spirits in the Sky, Vampire Weekend, Lorde, and so many more.

La Copine is the not-so-hidden gem of the desert. Set on the side of a highway in a humble building is seriously the best food in the high desert. PERIOD. The best. But plan ahead. Check their hours. If they’re not taking reservations, get there 30 minutes before they open to put your name on the list and you can still expect to wait. But it’s worth it. Just be patient, meet some nice people while you wait, and have a fantastic meal.

The best in the high desert! Don't bother with Pie for the People. Drive a little bit further for a better customer experience, shorter wait times, and delicious pizza.

Across the street from our house. A great mix of easy and moderate trails, plus mountain biking. If you’re a hiker, I still recommend the mountain biking paths — they’re more fun and more scenic. Just watch out for bikes.

Neighborhoods

Step back in time to the rough and tumble days of Wild West pioneers. Great, small shops and a couple restaurants line this Old West town — yes it’s a real town with its own Post Office! Built in 1946 by actor Dick Curtis, it was a living, breathing motion-picture set. It was also marketed as a real town people can live in if they wanted to live the Old West lifestyle. This had less appeal than he imagined, and the town shut down and has lived many lives. Today, it’s one of the top tourist attractions in the desert.
