Sightseeing

This is one of my favorite hikes. Trail head is literally across the street from the Purgatory Resort. The trail paralles Cascade Creek with steep canyon walls. Approx. 4.5 miles one way to where Cascade Creek joins the Animas River. Round trip is approx 9 miles. Worth it!

This is backpackers dream! Take the old steam train from Durango to the Needleton drop off point. Hike approx 6.5 miles uphill to the Chicago Basin. Camp at the Basin. You are now surrounded by 4 separate 14,000 foot peaks. Hike to the top of a 14er! Make sure you take the right clothing and emergency equipment. Mountain storms at the top of a 14er can be scary!
