Things to Do

You'll no doubt have plenty of things to do during your stay, but these are some of my favorites!
Located in an area known as “the Old Jimbo’s Lagoon,” named for a salty character who lived in old movie sets, and sold homemade smoked fish and cheap beer until he was too ill to live on his own. In the lagoon, you’ll find stingrays, pufferfish, mullet, and sometimes even one (or several) manatees. If you paddle just outside of the lagoon and look to your left, you’ll see a beach that was restored to a living shoreline by the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science’s volunteer-led habitat restoration program (which I used to run :) ). Just past the beach is an area that my family and I call “The Secret Garden.” Depending on the tide, you can either paddle or walk through the inlet, and you’ll find a beautiful mangrove forest awaiting you!

My favorite beach is adjacent to the North Beach Bandshell (which also puts on great concerts).Get there early in the day to find a metered parking space.

If you like a dive bar, don’t miss Churchill’s Pub, an English pub/punk rock venue that’s been pumping out local Miami bands since the 1980s. Parking is sketchy; I recommend taking a rideshare service, like Lyft or Uber.
