Over the hills and far away... Our architect-designed house mixes inside/outside space creating room aplenty for family, children and guests. Explore wetland, river and the Langeberg mountains. With the best of creature comforts this spot is paradise for children and a stylish retreat for adults.
The unique combination of stylish architect designed off-the-grid house with the wildness of the setting, mountain, wetland river and pool.
The calm, the peacefulness. We love the neighborliness, the character of Suurbraak, the brass-band at Christmas time, the young men riding bareback through the village. The family life on the stoeps of the houses along the main road. The convivial Paradise Organic cafe with its excellent food. Communal swimming at the big swimming holes close to the village. The ability to retreat, yet be close to all the goings on of tourist Overberg.

Just outside of Swellendam, peacefully nestled at the foothills of the lush and beautiful Langeberg Mountains, lies the picturesque little town of Suurbraak. On the other side of the river, is the quaint self-catering cottage of Bibi and Peter.
Two bedrooms with en suites. Just outside of Swellendam, peacefully nestled at the foothills of the lush and beautiful Langeberg Mountains, lies the picturesque little town of Suurbraak. This is home to a small farming community of hearty people and charming thoroughfare of the DC 200. This infamous 200 kilometre excruciating cycle race is well-known for the many mountain passes and sheer natural beauty.
In Suurbraak, on the other side of the river, is the quaint self-catering cottage, “Bibisjoy”, belonging to Peter and Bibi Present. Its appeal lies in its solitude and the fact that the mountain is its back-yard. This set-up is ideal for the avid outdoors-person, as mountain-biking, hiking, cross-country running, cycling, and even swimming and canoeing (depending of the water level of the river) can be practiced with ease. The charming cottage has a lovely garden with many indigenous plant species and ancient oak trees. This is a haven for birders, as even the odd kingfisher was spotted on the property. Hoopoe’s, the Cape Robin, a variety of sugar birds, Fiscal Shrike, Forktailed Drongo’s etc., are found here. Goats, horses and cattle on the adjacent plots add character and complement the country feel. One of the reasons the main gate must be kept closed at all times.

Looking for a cosy cabin in nature to enjoy red wine in front of an indoor fire in winter or explore waterfalls from in summer? Then look no further. Nestled among beautiful oak trees you'll find this special waterfall cabin to experience simple off-the-grid living. Backing onto a nature reserve and next to a small waterfall you'll love the tranquility. A sanctuary from which to explore the surrounding mountains, waterfalls and rivers. Close to MTB and hiking trails.
Positioned up against the mountain with its own waterfall, this cabin is a real get-away-from-it-all! The cabin layout is open plan with an ensuite bathroom on the main bedroom. Please note that the ensuite is part of the room, with the loo separated by a screen. The 2nd bedroom is screened off and semi private, ideal for children. Separate to the house is a 2nd farm style wet room with a toilet and shower. Indoor cooking consists of a 3 plate gas stove and a small gas oven (you'll just need to connect it to one of the gas bottles in the kitchen.) Outdoor cooking offers an open braai area and a small Weber braai for roasts. (There is a protective surface on the deck for the Weber braai). The decor is quirky, eclectic and comfy. The cabin is rustic but has everything you need for a very special holiday with friends and family. There is solar power so electricity is available in the cabin. There is a bar fridge and a large cooler box available to use. But please use the electricity mindfully, especially on cloudy days, as sometimes it might not last the whole day. I will send through tips on how best to ensure the electricity lasts when you make a booking. A small waterfall is less than 100 meters from the cabin with rustic steps leading down to a natural spot for a dip in the water on hot summer days. For the nimble amongst us a short but steep 50 meter walk takes you up the waterfall where you can enjoy views while dipping your feet in small rock pools formed by the flowing water. Follow the water further upstream to discover even more waterfalls. But please be careful, it can be very slippery. My cabin is dog friendly so sometimes despite our best cleaning efforts there is likely to be the odd dog hair or two in the cabin unfortunately. Please note for any allergy sufferers. Please note that the cabin is not 100% secluded. There are neighbours behind the cabin and you can sometimes hear and see them. I like the security that having neighbours offers and they are usually keep very much to themselves. Please note that due to the off-grid nature of the cabin the water is not suitable for drinking. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING WATER.
The historic village of Suurbraak, founded as a mission station in 1812, is quaint and quiet with great walks and friendly locals. There is a little waterfall right next door to the cabin, many other waterfalls in the area and the Buffelsjag river. There are great hikes in the area to match all fitness levels. Bird watching from the cabin's deck with a glass of wine is always a fun way to spend a lazy summer's afternoon too! The tourist town of Swellendam which is about 20 kms away has all you need including supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, galleries etc. Artsy Barrydale is about 15km away via the beautiful Tradouw Pass through some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain scenery on offer in the Langeberg. The beautiful Buffeljag dam is about 20 minutes away, another great option for an active day out.

We welcome you to let your shoulders go, breathe deeply and relax. This is the place that was named by the local Inhabitants for thousands of years as Xairu- Paradise. The village of Suurbraak is based at the foot of the the Langeberg Mountains.
Ernadoon se Plek has the most breathtaking view of the Langeberg Mountains. The semi-detached house has a large lounge/dining room with a 3/4 day bed and a single bed, a private bedroom, fully kitted kitchen, bathroom and toilet. The outside porch is the perfect place, where you can pour that sundowner and watch the Blue Cranes and open beaked Storks flyover whilst the Cape Robin, Mousebirds and various Sunbirds forage the indigenous flowers and insects that are in the garden.
This beautifully situated village, sheltered by giant oaks, was formerly known as Zuurbraak and lies at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, on the southern end of the Tradouw Pass. The mountains are rich in fynbos and bird life and cattle paths act as mountain trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and bird-watchers alike. The isolation of Suurbraak is one of its charms but this sheer lack of opportunity has forced the youth to seek employment elsewhere and has limited the financial resources of the people, both young and old. Many still cook on wood stoves and the people live close to the land using farming methods that belong to the past. The smaller farms are still ploughed using horse drawn ploughs. Agricultural work is often done manually with most households owning at least one cow and a few donkeys or horses. Donkey and horse-drawn carts are often seen in the streets. Mat making, hide curing and blacksmithing have all sadly died out, as has candle and soap making. Furniture making, however, and in particular chairs and the traditional methods of bodging, has remained. Garden furniture and crafts are also fashioned from alien vegetation. Guided village and mountain walking tours are offered, while horse riding and cart rides remind the visitor that time has stood still at Suurbraak. There are basic braai facilities alongside the river with spectacular pools. Suurbraak is close to Barrydale, Swellendam, Heidelberg and the wonderful Cape Nature Reserve, Grootvadersbosch.

Our house is situated on our family farm 35km outside of Swellendam between the foothills of the Langeberg Mountain and the Indian ocean. Depending on the time of the year there are many farm activities to see and experience. Our house is light and airy but very much home. We have an indoor garden which is any plant enthusiasts dream. Our guest bedroom has a lovely dubbel bed with only Egyptian cotton linen and an en suite bathroom with a shower and white towels.
We live on our family farm. Simonne is an 8th generation farmer and still farms with her father. Pieter is an Agronomist and will also one day form a bigger part of the farming team. We live in the heart of what we would call in afrikaans the “ruêns” (refering to our flowing hill country). In our eyes the most beautiful part of the world. Ever changing with the season and farm activities. For most part of the year we live on a big patchwork consisting of all the fields and the different crops growing on them. Our home has a big garden as well as an indoor garden, Simonne loves anything that she can put in the soil and see it grow. It’s very light and airy with big windows and lots of natural light. The perfect recipe to wash away any stress in this tranquil setting. A perfect getaway from everyday life. We offer additional services on request: Breakfast consisting of seasonal fruitsalad, cereals, muesli and yoghurt, freshly baked farm bread, fruit juice, tea and coffee @ R100pp Scones and tea served in the indoor garden @ R80pp Laundry service R70/5kg (wash, dry and iron)

Life in the village of Suurbraak, at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, poses a different charm to living on the other side of the river. The people are kind, helpful and friendly. Walking uphill with the mountains behind you, then turning back … the views of the mountain range is truly spectacular. The cottage is delicately decorated with hand picked pieces and includes an open plan bedroom, en-suite bathroom, kitchen area and a lounge. The beautiful glass doors open to the gardens with a view of the Barrydale valley and mountain range. Take time out to relax on the shady veranda on our vintage bench. Gated parking available, including safe entry for bikes. The cottage is within walking distance to footpaths, restaurants, small town shops and the R62.
The village of Barrydale is situated on the scenic R62 in the Overberg region in the Western Cape, South Africa, known for its wine routes, dried fruit and the Tradauw Pass. The R62 was voted one of the top ten best road trips in the world by CNN Travel. This route meanders through the Little Karoo with very characteristic seasons as can be seen in the beautiful succulents and wild flowers which adorns this region. Our House and Cottage are situated together, yet private. In May 2018 we started with the renovation of an old ‘nagmaal huisie’ (historical cottage used for a sleep over by farmers of yesteryear to attend Holy Communion) as well as the additional building situated on the same land. We are now proud to present the newly released House or Cottage (or both).

While having a braai you can enjoy the beautiful view onto the mountains, paradise like gardens and active bird life or even some farm animals close by on the property next door. The bathroom is open plan with a walk-in shower and separate toilet, beautifully planned with an eye to detail. The bathroom has an optional room divider fixed to the wall for privacy, if necessary. Please note: bathroom access is through the bedroom. You will receive homemade rusks, coffee, tea, sugar and fresh milk. If arranged beforehand, the fridge can be stocked with breakfast supplies, at an extra fee – find more details below. GUEST ACCESS Parking is right next to the cottage, all on one level – NO STEPS. You might share some areas with us, the animals (dogs and cats) or the workers, depending on the day of the week or time of day. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE No smoking; no children and no pets, as we have our own dogs and cats which might even visit you. An informal nursery with some of the indigenous trees growing on the property as well as a variety of succulents is available. You will find that because we are located only 4km from Swellendam CBD, the 3rd oldest settlement of South Africa, many tourist attractions are available to make your stay a very memorable one: variety of restaurants, historic buildings and museum, sightseeing hiking trails and award winning wineries in neighbouring towns. Nature lovers can explore three close-by CAPE NATURE PARKS as well as the Bontebok National Park, which is just across the N2 from us. Perfectly located to visit the Swellendam surrounding areas; with the southernmost tip of Africa and De Hoop Nature reserve being only 100km away and the Klein Karoo and famous Route 62 about half an hour drive from Swellendam. We are also situated halfway between Cape Town and George, being only two hours’ drive away with the convenience of an airport in both metropolitan areas, which makes this the perfect stop over to unwind when traveling between these two beautiful cities on one of the most famous scenic routes in South Africa.

Come enjoy an all in one experience in our cosy cottage only 100m from the Buffeljags river. Learn about the Sugar Bridge’s interesting history. Help feed the ducks, springbok and Choppie the ‘little’ pig. End your day with a sun downer on the banks of the river while wait for the train to pass.
Stay in the 166 yr old tole house of the historic Sugar Bridge with it's interesting history. The “Sugar Bridge” was built as part of a plan to provide a highway from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape, and opened in 1852 after several years of complex engineering and persistent problems: not the least of which is the tendency of the Buffejachts river to flood. This was a fearsome proposition, and it was decided that the piers should be made from massive blocks of local sandstone, to better withstand the force of the river. The solution was to build stone piers topped by a timber deck. There was a quarry nearby which would supply good quality sandstone, but where would timber of sufficient strength and length be obtained? By chance the Robert, en route from Burma to England with a cargo of teak, was wrecked at the mouth of the Lourens River at the beginning of 1847. The wood was ideal for a bridge deck, and enough timber for this purpose was purchased for £400 at the salvage auction, shipped to Port Beaufort and then hauled to the site by ox wagon, reportedly at the exorbitant transport cost of £800. The design Engineer saw a problem looming. The stones of the piers might each weigh a ton or two, but they would still be liable to move under the force of a flood if they were not held together with strong mortar. It was decided to use gypsum, better known as Plaster of Paris, as the cementing agent, and so an order was sent to France for a supply from the quarry in Montmartre which was its principal source. Something had to be added to the mix to prevent it from setting too quickly and the handiest retarding agent in the Cape in 1847 was common household sugar. The good citizens of Swellendam were no doubt fascinated when the materials for the bridge started to arrive on site – casks of Plaster of Paris, large teak beams, special saws to cut the stone blocks – and sacks of sugar! Surely these crazy Englishmen, reputedly members of the Royal Engineers (they weren’t) were not going to build a bridge out of sugar, the stuff Tant Sannie used for her famous koeksusters! But into the mix went the sparkling crystals, and so the new masterpiece became the “Sugar Bridge” Local legend has it that one particularly large sandstone block was so heavy that it broke the wheel of the wagon on which it was being carted from the quarry to the bridge site. The stone then slid off the back of the wagon and killed the brake-man, one Antonie. The stone was then rolled on tree trunks where it provided a convenient platform for unloading the timber before it was manhandled into position on the deck. On completion of construction some enterprising locals rolled “Antonie’s stone” to a high spot on the road where became a local landmark and a well known resting place on the highway. Antonie’s Stone can be seen on the mountain side of the National Road at the turn off to the farm Appelbosch. The Sugar Bridge carried traffic along the Garden Route highway for 101 years, until the N2 was opened in 1953. The bridge continued to carry local traffic, but the timber was beginning to deteriorate. At one stage there was an outbreak of punctures in village vehicles, until it was found that the heads of the nails in the bridge deck had worn away, leaving sharp spikes which penetrated the tyres. Then in the 1980′s a flood damaged one of the piers, and with the deck also deteriorating rapidly, it was decided to close the bridge permanently. The bridge has been declared a National Monument but due to lack of funds has never been restored to its former glory. Hopefully the romance of the Sugar Bridge will survive.

Mostly untouched by development, this quaint village offers visitors a glimpse into the past. Most of the old-style houses still line the road through town, and if you want to explore it is a great central point from which to start. Wonder Kloof lies across from town, an incredible geological crack in the Langeberg Mountain range, and there are a number of recently opened hiking trails that take you through the kloof. Life in the village of Suurbraak, at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, poses a different charm to living on the other side of the river. The people are kind, helpful and friendly. Walking uphill with the mountains behind you, then turning back … the views of the mountain range is truly spectacular. The covered front-stoep with the “braai” at the end, is very convenient especially if the weather is not favourable.
A very old water trench (lei-voor) which runs through the village, crosses the yard. We have planted a few herbs, which guests are welcome to use for cooking, salads, etc. We would want for you to relax in this space where you can feel safe. The sounds of Marks’ chickens next door is a reminder that you are actually in an entirely rural setting. If you need fresh free range eggs for breakfast, just arrange with Mark to purchase some. The covered front-stoep with the “braai” at the end, is very convenient especially if the weather is not favourable. Especially now that we are trying to establish a garden, we would still kindly request to keep the gates closed to keep the goats and horses out. Soon, we’ll have some indigenous trees to provide shade and some benches to enjoy this. Thank you for choosing to stay at our escape in the village far from the madding city crowd.
