Enjoy quiet surroundings and beautiful Sonoran Desert nature only 30 minutes from Downtown Tucson and the University of Arizona in our beautiful, authentic mud adobe casita, complete with a high-quality, modern kitchen, separate bedroom and living room spaces, and a gorgeous, newly renovated bathroom with rain-style shower head and soft water throughout.
This is a traditional mud adobe casita located on 5 acres of beautiful Sonoran desert with stunning views in every direction. The casita is very clean and charming and is perfectly suited to the extreme desert climate due to its massive walls, high ceilings, and central air-conditioning and heating system. Specific details and features of each room and the property itself are provided below.
You'll find the kitchen to be a bright, high-quality space that has everything and more you would expect to find in a much larger home. Specific amenities include:
- convection/microwave ('speed') oven
- washing machine
- 3-burner induction cooktop
- 30-inch drawer-style fridge/freezer (about the size of a large cooler; see pics)
- a Melitta 12-cup coffee maker
- a 4-slice toaster
- a mini-blender
- all pots, pans, measuring cups, etc., you should ever need for cooking
***The Living Room***
The living room has a 43-inch TV with all local over-the-air digital channels and an Apple TV with all streaming YoutubeTV channels. You can use it to log into your own TV/app accounts, mirror/stream from your ipad/phone/laptop, or use as our guest account to access all of the music you like on iTunes. If you want to hook something else up to the TV (e.g. your Amazon Fire TV or a game console), there is a media jack in the wall just below the table that includes power and inputs for usb and hdmi, as well as a standard headphone jack out.
Just below the TV is a two-person table with two chairs and a small table lamp. If you need more table space, the table converts into twice the area. Just remove the table cloth and you'll see how the top folds out (fold and rotate the top - try not to bash the wall when you do this!).
The fireplace is full of candles, which we supply. We don't allow actual fires in the fireplace for two reasons - first, liability concerns, and second, it gets way too hot with a fire in there, even on the coldest nights, and many people are very sensitive to mesquite smoke (mesquite is the main wood burned here). We think the candles look almost as good, however, without the potential negatives.
The couch is not full width, but it is more than wide enough for two people with space to spare, and we think it is surprisingly comfortable. Unless you're very short or flexible, don't plan on taking a nap on it or using it as an emergency escape from your partner's snoring. Along with the couch, there is a classic Ikea Poang chair + footstool, which you can obviously use at the couch as well.
Between the couch and Ikea chair is a small secretary desk that folds out to use for a laptop or writing. The top drawer contains A/V cables you might need, and the lower cabinets contain several games and a deck of cards.
The front door to the casita is on the north side of the living room, and a French door is on the south side. On the outside of the south side of the living room are two built-in wall benches in full sun.
The bedroom is separated from the living room and kitchen by a door. It has an open closet with hangars and a shelf, a very comfortable queen-size bed with plenty of pillows and high-quality linens, plus a sitting bench with inside storage. On the other side of the room is a chest-of-drawers with a large wall mirror. No need to live out of your suitcase here! The thermostat for the air-conditioner and heater is on the wall in the bedroom (a Nest thermostat - just turn it to the temp you want, and it also knows when you're out). If you push instead of turn, it will want a code. Just wait a while if that happens and it will return. Each side of the bed has a nightstand with lamps.
The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a locking door. The shower is amazing with a large glass block window and ~7-foot high rain-style shower head. The space is warm, bright, and clean. A huge added bonus is the soft water. Arizona has very hard water, due to high mineral content, that can leave you feeling crusty especially if you're not used to it, but the casita is equipped with a very nice water softener. The view of the 9000 foot (3000 meter) Catalina Mountains to the east is incredible from the bathroom.
Having finished the renovation of the casita itself, we are continuing to make improvements to the outside, including completing the wall to the casita and landscaping. No construction or work on the outdoor improvements will take place while you are visiting. Also, until the wall at the casita is complete, when you are outside you might hear the nearby pool equipment if it is running (for the pool and hot-tub behind the main house, which are not for guest use). Nobody has complained about this, but I feel a need to mention it here anyway.
There is good walking and bicycle access to the Oro Valley and Tucson bike/pedestrian paths, as well as a number of dedicated hiking trails in the area (Catalina State Park, Dove Mountain, and also trails on state land to the north of our property along Shannon Rd).
Please note that we don't charge a "cleaning fee" at our casita in the expectation that our guests leave the casita in reasonably clean condition - just as you would expect from your own guests at your home (...this is not a hotel, it's a home).
We are located 30 minutes north of downtown Tucson, 7 miles east of I-10 and 5 miles west of Oracle Rd, in a very peaceful neighborhood of horse properties. Javelinas, coyotes, rabbits, bobcats, hawks, owls, snakes, and other wildlife are very common here.
