Places to visit Canterbury Cathedral Cathedral House, 11 The Precincts, Canterbury CT1 2EE, (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) The Mother Church of the Anglican Communion and an outstanding example of English ecclesiastical architecture. Founded by St. Augustine in 597AD it was the country's first cathedral. The building is particularly renowned for superb examples of 13th Century stained glass windows. Visitors can view the Crypt, the Tomb of The Black Prince and - most famously - the tomb of Archbishop Thomas Becket. The spot where Becket was murdered is marked in the cathedral. The Cathedral precincts are also of interest, as are the medieval streets and Buttermarket that surround it. It's open all year, but subject to regular entry restrictions for services and special circumstances. If you get the chance to visit for a service, take the opportunity - you won't regret it! St Augustines Abbey Longport, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 1PF Situated just outside the city walls, opposite Canterbury Cathedral. In the year 598, Saint Augustine was sent to England by Pope Gregory I, on what might nowadays be called a revival mission. King of Kent at this time was Ethelbert, who happened to be married to a Christian, Bertha. Whether or not his spouse influenced him isn't known, but he allowed Augustine to found the first monastery in Britain just outside the city walls of Canterbury. It was originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent and is part of the Canterbury World Heritage Site, (along with the cathedral and St Martin's Church). It opens from Wednesday - Sunday between April and June, daily in July and August, and at weekends only for the rest of the year. Howletts zoo Bekesbourne Road, Bekesbourne Road, Bekesbourne, Canterbury CT4 5JL A world-class wild animal park set in ninety acres of beautiful ancient park land. It has a superb collection of exhibits including lions, tigers, elephants, and apes. The park, which was founded by John Aspinall, is also respected for its successful breeding programmes - along with its sister park at Port Lympne near Hythe. Wingham Wildlife park Rusham Road, Canterbury, CT3 1JL Wingham Wildlife Park first opened its doors as Wingham Bird Park in 1986, changing its name to Wingham Wildlife Park approximately 15 years later. The park is now so much more than birds and offer a full package of fun for all the family to enjoy from play areas, mini diggers and go-karts to hands on encounters, museum exhibits and beautiful picnic locations. Wildwood Trust Herne Common, Herne Bay, Kent Wildwood is a unique woodland discovery park. It occupies 40 acres of ancient woodland, with easy access and lots to do and explore. From owls to otters, bees to beavers, and wild boar to wolves, you can experience close encounters with native wildlife in an environment that is close to nature. The life of Wildwood constantly changes with the seasons; as the animals give birth a whole host of young animals can be spotted, which means every visit is a new experience. You can also travel back to Saxon times to meet the local residents and find out how humans and nature got along. Catch a live demonstration of their ancient crafts and skills from the UK's leading re-enactment society. Port Lympne Aldington Road, Lympne, Hythe CT21 4LR Set over 600 acres, Port Lympne is home to the UK’s most authentic safari experience, The African Experience – 100 acres alive with African animals. Join our safari vehicles to see animals including zebras and giraffes wandering freely then head off on foot around the rest of the park to see the big cats and primates. Look out for the baby giraffe and rhino born in 2016! Visitors to Port Lympne throughout the year are promised a super, natural and epic day out as they explore wooded pathways to discover where the wild things are and see the UK’s largest herd of black rhino, big cats, small cats, primates, western lowland gorillas and more. Tankerton slopes and beach The cliff-top lawns of Tankerton Slopes, with their colourful beach huts, roll gently towards the sea and provide an excellent vantage point to watch the nautical world go by. The coastline provides a lovely walk for miles or just find a place to relax on the shingle beach. There are far reaching views across the estuary towards Southend. A long thin spit of shingle is exposed at high tide locally known as 'The Street', which is quickly covered at high tide. During the winter months the slopes are a popular place for sledging! Broadstairs Broadstairs is popular for its award-winning Blue Flag sandy beaches, delightful range of independent shops and cliff top walks to neighbouring Ramsgate and Margate. Whitstable Whitstable is like no other town by the sea. Its traditional charms, strong arts culture and rich maritime history complement Whitstable's modern appeal. Whitstable's main claim to fame is its oysters which remain an intrinsic part of this sea town's character and are celebrated every July at the Oyster Festival. Oysters and other delicacies from the sea can be enjoyed at the local restaurants and pubs or taken home from the fresh fish market at the harbour. Local walks There are a number of beautiful walks located around Littlebourne. Walks to the nearby villages of Wickhambreaux and Ickham are definitely worth a visit. Both have lovely country pubs that served traditional home cooked food.

Does drifting to sleep whilst reading a book in the garden room hammock sound like perfection? How about Prosecco in the hot tub, or playing board games late into the early hours next to a wood burning fire in the cosy snug? Go fishing on the huge lake, feed the mandarin ducks on the pond, or even try metal detecting!
COVID-19 - KEEPING YOU SAFE: Thorough disinfecting of all areas now takes place at this property, including a minimum 53-hour guest turn around window. Please see extra notes for details about additional charges for amenities such as use of the hot tub, BBQ, early-checkin and late checkout. Nestled in beautifully mature grounds that are steeped in medieval and World War II history, Daweswood perfectly marries traditional country cottage charm with the luxury of ultra modern living. The gardens are adorned with bluebells during the Spring, and are dotted with blossoming English fruit trees and even a magnificent tulip tree that provides dappled shade to the duck pond below. Mallards, moorhens, mandarin ducks, and even kingfishers call the tranquility of the pond their home, whilst rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers and pheasants forage for food next to the hand-pumped well across a footbridge from the site of a medieval tile kiln. Whilst the house and outbuildings were garrisoned by soldiers during World War II, some of the famous stained glass windows from Canterbury Cathedral were once buried beneath the front gardens for protection from German bombing raids. Note that the front and rear gardens are not fenced so children and pets must be supervised at all times as there is a pond and a road that can be accessed. Allow dogs off their lead at your own risk! The property has been extensively refurbished to cater for the needs of holiday-makers whether they be families or groups of friends, and provides a range of large entertaining spaces including: - A sun-drenched garden room overlooking the pond with a comfortable hammock, dining table, seating area, electric roof windows, ceiling fans and bluetooth/wifi/radio speaker. - A cosy snug with a log burning fire, corner swing seat, window seat, large selection of board games, television, bluetooth/wifi/radio speaker and a large sofa capable of sleeping one person. - A huge sun terrace with a dining table and chairs, brick-built charcoal BBQ and 8-seater hot tub with in-built bluetooth speaker system. Downstairs there is a further king bedroom, a twin bedroom and two large bathrooms. All bathrooms and en-suites enjoy heated floors, heated towel radiators, large surface space for your toiletries around sink, illuminated & anti-steam heated mirrors, luxurious natural toiletries and plenty of towels. The property benefits from a dedicated high-speed fibre optic Internet line with WiFi throughout including the rear garden, cosy underfloor heating, commercial-grade fire detection, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers & blankets, first aid kits and a state of the art security system including external CCTV for your peace of mind. Further benefits of the property include exclusive access to a large fishing lake sitting at the bottom of a 46 acre valley accessible opposite the driveway of the property. 2 fishing rods are available to rent and a local tackle shop is only 5 minutes away by car in Blean. A zorb ball is also available on the lake as well as 2 inflatable paddle boats. Details of rental charges can be found below in extra notes. It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk across the land to the lake. Kindly note that in order to avoid frustration and disappointment, it is not advised to try fishing if you haven't done it before without the experience of someone who has! Enjoy 20% off food at the award-winning local pub, The Tyler's Kiln. A spectacular range of premium Prosecco's are available should you wish to enjoy Prosecco tasting featuring 5 different bottles for a discounted price as found below in the extra notes. A professional-grade metal detector is available for hire. Kindly note that this equipment is not a 'toy' and is capable of producing very accurate results! You have access to almost 50 acres of land which has been occupied during medieval times and the second world war, of which only a small % has been scanned. All finds must be reported to me and in the vast majority of cases you will be allowed to keep them. All upgrades and additions with associated costs can be found below in the extra notes.
Located in East Kent, known as the 'garden of England' and only six minutes from Canterbury city centre and ten minutes from the Whitstable coast by car, Tyler Hill is a beautiful and well-connected rural hamlet on the outskirts of Canterbury. It is also only two minutes from the rear entrance of Kent University. Tyler Hill is so named after the medieval tile production in the area and in fact a circa 700 year old tile kiln sits within the grounds of Daweswood. Just down the road from Daweswood is the multi-award winning The Tyler's Kiln pub & restaurant. The well-stocked bar is dominated by a huge brick built kiln fireplace featuring roaring open fires, and upstairs there is a a private dining room for up to 10 people, as well as a cosy snug for up to 15. The beautiful all-weather heated beer garden includes a walk-way over a well stocked pond which is 'rained' into by an stunning copper tree water sculpture. Traditional bedroom with double bed and ample storage space in large cottage, built 1733. It has not been overly modernised, but has central heating, modern shower/wetroom, and Wifi. I also have a very friendly Jack Russell! Ideal base to explore East Kent. Due to steps and stairs, not suitable for people with limited mobility. Please note there's only one parking space (on my neighbours' drive), but there's also a layby 100 m from the house. The bus stop is about 300 m away, on the main road.
Double room in Kentish cottage: open fires, beams, etc. Not suitable for people with mobility problems. The room has a double bed, is carpeted, has central heating and a walk-in wardrobe. Shared bathroom next to room; also a wetroom downstairs. We have a piano and a big garden. Towels, toiletries and a hairdryer are provided. Please note both the pillows and duvet are filled with feathers, and I'm afraid I have no synthetic ones. Breakfast is included: tea, coffee, fruit juice, cereal and / or as much toast and eggs as you can eat - though I'll happily provide other things if you give me enough warning :-) We have a Jack Russel...she's very friendly, but this is not a good place for someone who doesn't like dogs! The house is on a street off the main road in a quiet village between Canterbury and Sandwich. At the back of the house there's a field full of rabbits, squirrels and birds. The house is about a mile away from Howletts wild animal park. Good bus service to Sandwich and Canterbury - every 20 minutes through the day (not so good in the evening or on Sundays!) The bus takes about 10 minutes to get from Canterbury to Littlebourne; the bus stop is 300 metres away, on the main road. Half hourly train service from Canterbury to London (St Pancras/Charing Cross or Victoria); the fastest takes just under an hour. National Express coaches (to Victoria) are usually much cheaper but take about two hours. Apart from being just 4 miles from the world famous tourist destination of Canterbury and its spectacular medieval cathedral, the village of Littlebourne is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the sea is within a half hour drive to the north, east and south....oysters at Whitstable, glorious sandy beaches of Thanet, Turner at Margate, Dickens at Broadstairs, birdwatching on the sand dunes at Sandwich, a pier and two Tudor castles at Deal, the White Cliffs and Castle at Dover (not to mention frequent ferries to France) - and there's Britain's only official desert at Dungeness, about an hour south west of Canterbury.
It's quiet and rural. Canterbury is a very busy little town and I love it, but it is nice to get back to the peace and quiet of my garden. I think the most important things to see here are Canterbury, and the coast: Dover, Whitstable, Broadstairs, Sandwich - depending on your tastes and amount of time available.

Relax and unwind in this artist-run bohemian retreat. Tucked away in the village of Preston, surrounded by orchards, you'll enjoy a peaceful 'get-away' yet be in easy reach of local amenities and Kent's stunning coastline. The studio is blissfully quiet, set back from the cottage with its own entrance under a vine-covered pergola, with access to a large garden. Your host is happy to interact as much or as little as you like, and will gladly share the best experiences the area has to offer.
Woodsmoke Arts Studios comes with all the usual amenities except TV, so you can be sure to relax and tune in with nature. There is a contemporary yet vintage feel to the studio which boasts high ceilings, large windows, and has a fabulous Swedish log burner at its centre. Built for artists, it has glorious light throughout which creates a sense of space and calm, all adding to the feeling of being on retreat. There is WiFi but the signal can be intermittent and we encourage all guests to switch off their devices and 're-wild'! There is plenty to do to connect with nature, and books and board games to focus a busy mind. There are plenty of places to stretch out and massage/yoga professionals on call to help you relax. Seasonal craft activities can also be arranged. The luxurious double bed has sheets with a generous thread count for you to enjoy a good nights sleep, and there is a pull out sofa bed for additional guests. The 5 meter bell tent can be hired for an additional fee, which will sleep 2-4 extra people comfortably. The studio has its own toilet and separate bathroom with a freestanding tub in which to enjoy a candle-lit soak. Prosecco and cake can be arranged for a treat on arrival, and a continental breakfast comes as standard and can be found in the studio fridge. Tea, coffee, and herbal drinks are also available. Guests have the use of the rear garden, but are asked to keep noise to a minimum in respect of the neighbours and children's riding school at the back of the property. This is a place that welcomes creatives, nature lovers, and folk who won't mind the odd muddy paw print. Allergy sufferers please come prepared, the pollen count can be high and we do have pets and feather filled bedding. If you come across a creepy crawly we will do our best to guide them elsewhere, but we are very much out in the country! Expect to hear birdsong in the morning and owls at night, and sometimes the call of the wild really does drift over the fields as the lions roar from Wingham Wildlife Park.
Preston is a small rural village with a traditional church, village hall, community meadow, and recreation ground which includes a children's play area. A short walk through the orchards brings you to the picturesque Elmstone, which boasts a beautiful picnic spot and quaint library in a telephone phone box. Within a stones throw of the studio is Preston Garden Centre's fabulous bistro 'Coppers' where you can grab anything from a coffee and croissant to a full roast dinner, and pick up a tropical plant while you're at it! Or walk across the fields and relax in front of the fire with a craft beer at the Duke of William in Ickham. Historic Canterbury is a 20 minute drive, as is Sandwich, Deal and Dover. If its Art and Culture you are looking for, hang out in hip Whitstable, visit Margate's Turner Contemporary, or eat fish and chips with an Antony Gormley sculpture in Folkestone, all within a similar distance. There's something for everyone in this region, and with easy access to London, the ports, and channel tunnel, its the perfect place to explore the rest of Europe.

Our home is within walking distance of the beautiful old town of Canterbury. It is 10 minutes walk from the main bus station. We do not live in the house but we are available for any information you may need at any time. Airbnb guests have full use of the public areas in the house including the garden.
The garden room has an adjacent deck in the garden. There is a shared bathroom on first floor. Access to kitchen and lounge is in the house. Each room has designated cupboard space in kitchen and bathroom.

Relaxed home with spacious bedroom containing comfortable bunk beds suitable for 1 or 2 guests, lots of storage,TV and tea/coffee facilities. The area is close to the A2, local beaches and an ideal location for exploring the Island, with a good bus/train service.
I have a generous sized room in my home which is in the quiet village of Garlinge on the outskirts of Margate. The room contains adult size bunk beds and is suitable for either 1 or 2 people, the rent is adjusted accordingly. There is also a mattress so a third person can be accommodated if needed. The room has good storage, TV with freeview and tea/coffee making facilities as well as a small fridge for your use. There is a table and chairs for guests to work and use laptops. There is also a hairdryer/curling tongs/hair straighteners and an iron/ironing board. Maps and tourist information leaflets are left in the room for guests own use. I share my home with my dog who is very friendly so it would be great if you like animals !
Garlinge is on the outskirts of Margate and is a quiet residential area close to beautiful local beaches as well as seaside cafes and shops in Westgate and Westbrook. Margate Town centre is approximately 25 minutes walk where The Turner Contemporary Centre boasts exhibitions from famous and local artists and is well worth a visit. Margate also has some lovely cafes, restaurants and some local pubs provide live music. There is also a jazz club hosting comedy entertainment. Our Theatre Royal is one of the oldest Theatres in Britain and is worth visiting; it has a beautiful interior and along with the Winter Gardens showcases plays, concerts and comedy shows. Margate Old Town is lovely to take a leisurely stroll through and has unique and interesting architecture. It also contains delightful sprawling cafes and quirky retro and vintage shops to browse in. If you want a holiday which is relaxed then Margate is definitely the place to visit, whether for a weekend away or a base to explore the rest of Thanet. Margate is only 1 hour and twenty minutes on the fast train from London which makes it ideal for weekends away. Local bus stops provide easy access to the historic port of Ramsgate and the beautiful tourist town of Broadstairs which has an annual Charles Dickens Week and is home to the Broadstairs Folk Festival. Travelling around Thanet is very easy and convenient from local bus stops. Buses also go to Canterbury, which is well worth a visit with it's historic Cathedral. The quaint seaside resorts of Westgate-on-Sea (with an independent cinema) and Birchington, are definitely worth visiting.

Two bedrooms, a bathroom and living room located on the lower ground floor of this Huf Haus. The home is set in private land with plenty of parking and lovely outdoor sitting areas. We are within walking distance of two wedding venues, a good local pub and a smart new cafe/eatery. Many other charming villages are a short drive (or long walk) away. Also in the village we have a very nice coffee shop/eatery set in a garden nursery. We are close to the Kent coast, 20 minutes by car in several directions. We are also 20 minutes from the historic city of Canterbury and 15 minutes from the medieval town of Sandwich. Our place is in a quiet neighborhood but close to the city centre, nightlife, public transport, and parks. Your room will have a provate entrance, an en-suite, and access to the family kitchen. We usually meet our guests in person and show around. But if we are away you will be sent instructions for a self check-in. We have a mini schnauzer with us - very quiet, adorable and hypoallergenic. But still you better know this beforehand.
We offer a recently renovated modern en-suite room with a private entrance (single bed).
This is a quiet neighborhood off the main road, with several restaurants around the corner and City Centre 10 minutes walking distance.

Era molt amable i el contacte era fàcil. Tot estava molt net. L'habitació era còmoda i tenia una bonica vista al jardí. En qualsevol moment de nou. Em vaig sentir molt ben rebuda.

    Maria2018-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Encantador, net, acollidor i ben situat!

This secluded private space at the end of our garden, is a stone's throw away from the sea and is a perfect get away with a private entrance . However please note that although there is a w/c there is NO shower or bath yet! With so many coastal walks and cycles close by you'll never get bored of exploring. Margate with its retro, vibrant art scene, boasts the Turner Contemporary and Dreamland is 3 miles away. Broadstairs and Canterbury are also very accessible. Pls read other notes.
Small, cosy. Garden retreat within a stone's throw of the sea. Many coastal cycles and walks close by. A retro/art scene at both Margate and Deal. Historical Broadstairs and amazing oysters at Whitstable, all extremely accessible. Train stain 10 mins walk and Birchington itself boosts blue flag, sandy beaches and many fantastic restaurants from Lebanese to traditional pub.
The beautiful coastline is truly breathtaking and the sunsets were the inspiration for many of Turner's work. If you are looking for a quiet country walk, long scenic cycle, swim in the sea, Michelin star restaurants, artistic community, then the Isle of Thanet is the place for you.

No Cleaning Fees! Colourful room with large desk, comfy chair and single bed, overlooking wooded area. The cottage, built 1733, has not been overly modernised, but has central heating, modern shower/wetroom, and Wifi - and a very friendly Jack Russell! Due to steps and stairs, not suitable for people with limited mobility. Please note there's only one parking space (on my neighbours' drive), but there's a layby 100 m from the house. Bus stop about 300 m away. Ideal base to explore East Kent.
A relatively large, simply furnished room with single bed in a large cottage. The house has not been overly modernised, but has central heating, modern shower/wetroom, and Wifi. This room has secondary glazing, and is fully carpeted. Please note there is no wardrobe in this room, but there is a rail where you can hang things up. It also has a nice big desk with a comfortable chair. The duvet and pillow are filled with feathers, and I'm afraid I have no synthetic ones. We have a piano and a big garden. Towels, toiletries and a hairdryer are provided. Some guests find the staircase rather steep - this house is not suitable for people with mobility problems. Breakfast is included: tea, coffee, fruit juice, cereal, porridge, and / or as much toast and eggs as you can eat - though I'll happily provide other things if you give me enough warning :-) We have a Jack Russel...she's very friendly, but this is not a good place for someone who doesn't like dogs! National Express coaches (to London Victoria) are usually much cheaper but take about two hours.
East Kent is stuffed full of history! From the Romans and Vikings, through the Normans and Tudors, to the Napoleonic and World Wars, this corner of England has always been of huge importance. The most important thing to see is of course Canterbury Cathedral, but then there's the White Cliffs of Dover, Whitstable, Broadstairs, Sandwich, Faversham, and dozens of pretty villages with picturesque pubs with good local beer and food! There are also dozens of castles and gardens which are open to the public. Kent is "The Garden of England"; there's very little industry, and it's mainly agricultural. Canterbury, however, has an extremely high student population, and is a very busy, vibrant city, still retaining some of its medieval streets. There is also a large modern shopping centre. The coast is within a half hour drive of Littlebourne to the north, east and south. All the seaside areas and towns around the coast are very different; there are vast sandy beaches, massive chalk cliffs, fishing towns, acres of sand dunes and mudflats, and Victorian seaside resorts with the original piers.

Recomanat

    Pat2017-12-22T00:00:00Z

Tot ordenat i net. De debò, però: Hot tub!

    Henning2017-09-23T00:00:00Z

A beautifully 400 year old grade II* listed building full of history - Winston Churchill once stayed here! Set in the Kent countryside there are stunning walks and cycle rides. The local village (Minster) hosts a number of great pubs, restaurants, tea room and mainline train station. We are surrounded by lovely coastline too and for golfing enthusiast we are just 16mins drive from the hosts of the 2020 Open in Sandwich. A warm welcome awaits guests.
Our home is old and full of character, this includes some uneven walls and floors. The ceiling height is good throughout but some of the doorways are low so you may need to duck to do through them.
