In a quiet road, just ten minutes walk to the sea, beach & historic village which has numerous pubs, restaurants & tea rooms. There is a gate in the back garden with direct access to Beacon Hill Nature Reserve with panoramic views of the sea, South Downs & Brighton. Ideal for people who enjoy walking and nature, you will meet my 2 friendly rescue dogs & cat. Brighton is just 5 miles away and there are frequent buses. This will suit 1 or 2 adults wanting a quiet break.
The bed is a small double & measures 4" x 5'6"' so suits 1 or 2 small adults. There is a small en-suite shower room & the room is accessed via wooden paddle steps (once you have done them once or twice they are easy but there is a low ceiling). There are lovely views from the dormer window and with the blind open you can watch the stars from your bed. I have 2 friendly rescue dogs and often have doggy visitors too so animal lovers welcome! Tea, coffee & toast making facilities are provided in the room.
Rottingdean is a typical English village with a village green, pubs, a clifftop walk, tea rooms and restaurants. It has an interesting history and from the gate in my garden there is direct access to the historic wooden windmill on Beacon Hill, which also has a Neolithic burial mound. The views from behind the house are spectacular, you can see Brighton, via the famous Roedean School and Brighton Marina, with the beautiful South Downs behind. The Rampion Wind Farm can be seen and on a clear day the view is as far as the Isle of Wight.

I have a lovely, first floor single room in my Edwardian house in the historic heart of Rottingdean. It is a quiet room with views of cottages and gardens. There is a very comfortable bed, original Edwardian wardrobe and restored antique drawers & desk. The room is tastfully decorated in a very peaceful colour scheme. There is a TV which offers bbc iplayer, Now TV and YouTube. Tea & coffee making facilities are provided. Along the landing there is a bathroom with a bath/shower & separate toilet.
Within a few minutes walk of my house you can see the beautiful St Margarets Church, the duck pond, the old village green and the picturesque Kipling Gardens. Also very close is the Grange art gallery & museum & the Windmill. The house is only 350 metres from the beach & seafront so perfect for an evening stroll before dinner. As my house is right in the centre of the village I don't offer breakfast. There are so many coffee shops and cafes that do a wonderful English Breakfast, Eggs Benedict or freshly baked croissants you won't go hungry. You will be spoilt for choice for traditional village pubs which offer a fantastic selection of local beers and gins and some offer live music. Only a 10-minute drive or bus ride to Brighton Marina and the cosmopolitan city centre, with numerous bars, live music, eateries, theatres, art galleries and antique shops. Enjoy shopping along The Lanes, saunter along the pier, visit the Royal Pavilion or ride the new i360. The glorious South Downs National Park with its excellent walks and cycle routes can be easily accessed from Rottingdean.
Rottingdean is often described as the hidden gem of Brighton. It has a special feel to it and although it is only 2 miles outside the city it retains all the characteristics of a village. It dates back to the Domesday book and has a Norman church and a pond and village green at it's heart. There are many pretty old cottages and historic houses in the village. The famous writer Rudyard Kipling, the Pre-Raphelite artist Edward Burne Jones and the artist William Nicholson all once resided in Rottingdean. There is a wonderful museum - The Grange with the most tranquil tea garden you can find. My house is right at the centre of village life so finding a place to have coffee is not difficult. There are many coffee shops and cafes (breakfast at the Sea Spray on the seafront is a must). Rottingdean boasts 5 pubs serving local ales and good food to suit all pockets. The seafront is a wonderful place whether in winter or summer.

We have recently installed a Smart TV with freeview and DVD player and there is a large selection of DVD's to choose from. The garden room was recently built and completed in 2012. As the room is detached from the main house, our guests can come and go as they please and are welcome to enjoy our stunning garden and exclusive use of the hot tub which is cleaned and maintained regularly for guests. Please let us know in advance if you might like to use it as it is not up to temperature all the time and cannot be guaranteed. Ovingdean beach is reached via a flight of steps and has a large stretch of sand when the tide is out and is great for rock pooling. There is also a little cafe, open on sunny days, that serves tea in proper mugs and homemade cakes & bacon sandwiches! There is a local shop just up the road which sells the essentials like bread and milk etc. We are about a 10 minute drive from Brighton city centre and there are buses that go from the seafront.

It dates back to the Saxons with a Norman church, a pond and village green at it's heart. There are many pretty old cottages and historic houses in the village. It was a popular place for artists, writers and public figures to live including Rudyard Kipling, the Pre-Raphelite artist Edward Burne Jones and the artist William Nicholson. Our twin ensuite room is up on the first floor via a narrow winding staircase. It looks out both onto the high street and our garden at the back. The room has two single beds with bedside tables and lamps. The bathroom has a separate toilet and a shower over the bath. Bottles of water provided for first night. Bath and beach towels provided.
HISTORY OF ROTTINGDEAN (a smugglers’ village) Rottingdean is a village of currently 2,500 inhabitants with one of the oldest Cricket Clubs in the country. It was a farming community and the name is derived from a local Saxon family named Rotyng and as the village sat in a dene; hence the name Rotyngsdene (another theory is that the name originated from a Saxon Lord called Rota; hence Rota’s people in the Dene). The Green and pond has been the focus of village providing the only source of drinking water during Neolithic and Saxon times and flint tools and axes have been uncovered here. Up on the hill overlooking the village is a Neolithic long barrow. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066 William the Conquerer commissioned the Doomsday book which was a record of the value of his kingdom and Rottingdean (Rotingdene) is listed. For two hundred years from the mid–seventeenth century, the Rottingdean Gang of Smugglers brought in contraband cargo from landing sites nearby, using caves dug into the cliffs, which led to tunnels connecting the cellars of houses and pubs (Inns) under Rottingdean High Street and up to the Green. (heavy traffic on the High street prevents this tunnel being accessible now although the metal entrance doors can be seen on the undercliff walk next to the beach). The gang included the vicar Dr Thomas Hooker (there is a bust in St Margaret’s Church) who was a skilled horseman and acted as a lookout for the gang. Behind the Plough Inn in Whipping Post Lane is Whipping Post House, a listed building dating from the sixteenth century, once the home of Captain Dunk, village butcher by day and smuggler by night. The remoteness of the village next to the sea made Rottingdean a popular spot with smugglers and at one time Rottingdean’s windmill sails were used to signal that the coast was clear. You can still visit some of the smugglers’ favourite haunts such as The Black Horse Inn half-way on the high street reputed to have been the smugglers’ meeting place. These times were romanticized in Rudyard Kipling’s* A Smugglers’ Song - “Five and twenty ponies/Trotting through the dark/Brandy for the Parson/Baccy for the Clark.” A Customs House was established in the High Street to stop the smuggling and this is opposite our house. Our own house is believed to be from the seventeenth century and the rear wall of our garden is part of the original village wash house. A pier at Rottingdean provided the eastern destination for Magnus Volk’s ‘Daddy Long Legs seashore railway’, which ran for three miles. Built on 24ft high stilts so up to 150 passengers could be carried above the high tide but it suffered many disasters along the way, including the track being washed away by a storm a week after opening. The tracks can still be seen along shore from Rottingdean to the Pier at low tide. Magnus Volk is buried in the eleventh century St Wulfran’s church in nearby Ovingdean and Ovingdean Grange is owned by actor Steve Coogan. St Margaret’s Church is beside the pond and now mainly Norman although the original was Saxon). Burn marks from a fire in the fourteenth century are still visible inside from when the village was invaded by French pirates and local residents who took refuge in the tower were burnt alive. In the early twentieth century, a proposal was received from Forest Lawn Memorial Park, a private cemetery in Glendale, California wanting to buy the church, dismantle it stone by stone, ship it to the United States and rebuild it in the park. When the sale was refused, an exact replica was built instead. St Margarets church contains stained glass windows including seven designed by Burne-Jones and made by the Morris firm. Agnes married Sir Edward Poynter (became President of Royal Academy & director of Tate Gallery) and their son was Rudyard Kipling who wrote Jungle Book (poet, author and Nobel prize winner for literature). Kipling lived first in North End House and later The Elms which is adjacent to Kipling Gardens. Formerly within the grounds of The Elms, Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean village are open every day to the public and contain a walled rose garden, ornamental grasses, a chalkland wild area and a croquet lawn. Originally the Vicarage, The Grange now contains a Public Library and Art Gallery with permanent Museum of the history of Rottingdean and its famous residents and a garden café. Some of the famous people buried in the graveyard include Sir Edward Burne-Jones (Pre-Raphaelite artist and designer) and Stanley Baldwin (UK Prime Minister three times); Blues guitarist Gary Moore (lead singer of Irish band Thin Lizzy); Julie Cowell (mother of music mogul Simon Cowell) buried next to her husband Eric Cowell. Other residents include Lord Carson, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland; artist Sir William Nicholson; head of Reuters news agency Sir Roderick Jones and his wife the writer Enid Bagnold, famous for the book National Velvet. MGM studios bought the rights and chose the young English girl Elizabeth Taylor to play the lead role. Next to the church is Dean Court road and Tudor Close which are now private houses and apartments. It was once a hotel built using old timbers featuring carved Tudor roses and wood taken from Tudor warships in Portsmouth dockyard. In the 1930s many famous people visited the hotel and thus included Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn. Wadington’s board game Cluedo was originally called ‘Murder at Tudor Close’ and mystery murder games were hosted played out by guests and local actors.

The centre of Brighton is only ten minutes' drive away and there is also regular bus services with a stop right outside the house. This property of exceptional quality has been tastefully designed and fully equipped for an unforgettable stay. The house is arranged with living accommodation upstairs and two bedrooms downstairs. Upstairs: The main living area is a large, bright open plan space, with views over the Downs. The floor to ceiling glass doors open onto a Juliet balcony, allowing you to open the room completely in the warmer months. For the winter months, there is a built in log burner in the brick chimney breast and a supply of logs is provided outside the kitchen door. The sitting area has an exquisitely comfortable three seater and a two seater sofa and a large foot stall. There is also a piano which has been recently tuned. There is a Bang & Olufsen sound system in the sitting room, which offers internet radio stations, stored music or which can connect to Spotify. There is a vast collection of books (please feel free to browse and read them, but please do leave them there!), and there is a TV as well. This room doubles as the third bedroom. The sofa opens into a double bed – there are two tables with lamps either side and wardrobe space is available. The study is next to this room leads to the rear garden. This has a large enclosed shower, basin and WC. Behind a door, you will also find the washing machine and tumble dryer. Outside: The front garden is protected by a high wall and gates and is completely private and secure. It is a large paved area with many plants in pots – notably a large number of palms, oleander bushes, a massive datura bush and many echium pininana plants, which may be towering above the garden in flower, depending on when you visit. The rear garden is again completely secluded. It is terraced on several levels, having a dedicated BBQ area, a dining area, a sunbathing area, a seating area around a fire pit and a summerhouse. Again, there are many palms and two large olive trees. This will be the perfect place for you to enjoy glorious, sunny weather - be it for alfresco meals, sunset cocktails or simply soaking up some vitamin D.
Nestled in the South Downs National Park, between Roedean and Rottingdean, the house is situated in the picturesque village of Ovingdean. The name, which is Old English for 'the valley of people associated with a man called Ōfa', shows that the village has existed since Anglo-Saxon times and little seems to have disturbed its peace since. The historic village is a conservation area. Its focus is the 11th century St Wulfram's Church. The heart of the village is very old and picturesque and, apart from the Church, there are notable buildings such as Ovingdean Grange. The house is in the more modern area of the village, in a quiet, leafy road, leading to Beacon Hill Nature Reserve and the sea. East Brighton Golf Club is only about 5 minutes’ drive away! Brighton itself has a thriving café and restaurant culture, especially around the bustling Lanes with its many independent shops, bars and eateries. Closer to the beach, there is the Palace Pier, the Sealife Aquarium and the i360 – the world's tallest moving observation platform! There is a long stretch of seafront bars, clubs, restaurants, shops and galleries, with arcades, outside entertainment and many children's activities. The spectacular Royal Pavilion is a must see landmark, and there are plenty of venues, museums, parks and events all year round! The stunning South Downs are a short drive away and are ideal for a walk, bike ride or picnic, and there is a plethora of green spaces and parks for outdoor activities. Brighton has something for everyone!

The Brighton Beach Hut is minutes from the best kept beach in Brighton and 20 mins into the city. On Marathon route, walk/cycle along the seafront to Hove without crossing a road, stopping off at the Marina first. The South Downs opposite the house provides wonderful walks. The sunny apartment is newly decorated with a funky yet cosy decor, well-equipped kitchen and space outside for bbqs. My place is perfect for couples and families with space for bikes and boards. One small dog welcome!
Clean and uncluttered with a retro feel, my apartment is a two-bedroomed flat with lots of garden and a patio for sunny breakfasts. The kitchen is new and fully-equipped with everything you need to cook a meal for 4. However, there is also a small BBQ/firepit for those warm evenings at home or at the beach. Off the kitchen are the bright and sunny bedrooms. Bedroom 1 has an original Victorian brass double bed and old Welsh wardrobe. Bedroom 2 has two large single beds with wardrobe and chest of drawers. There is a door into my house but it is locked at all times and may only be used in an emergency. All beds have new mattresses and bedding. The utility area has a washing machine, cleaning equipment, ironing board and iron, clothes dryer and hairdryer and ample room to store your belongings. Beyond this is the shower-room, small but perfectly formed. The large sitting-room looks onto the garden. There is a TV which is equipped with a streaming device for watching catch-up programmes, and a CD player. As the Hut is connected to my house, you may hear muffled voices or the radio but not late at night or too early in the morning, and we do aim to keep the noise down, especially if you have little ones that need an early night!
This is a great part of Brighton & Hove - in the countryside but with all the amenities of the city just down the road. There are plenty of buses from the end of the road into town (or the other way to Eastbourne and Seven Sisters) and, if you time it right, the No 52 stops right outside the house. You can also spend the day on the beach at the end of the road. At low tide there are the rock pools, perfect for little kids - and big ones - while 2 hours either side of high tide is the best time for swimming. And afterwards, you can have cake and a hot drink at the cafe. Dogs are also allowed on this beach all year round, just clear up after them. The only downside to the beach are the steep steps - just be aware if you are very infirm or carrying heavy bikes. Rottingdean is the next village along, just a walk over Beacon Hill, with antique shops, tearooms and plenty of pubs. Best pub - The Queen Vic, best restaurant - Franks for delicious French bistro food. With all the parking restrictions in Brighton, this seems to be the only place to park for free these days. There is room for one car on the drive with others parking on the road. It's probably best to catch a bus into Brighton but just be aware that if you come back late (last bus from Brighton is 3am) the road from the bus stop on the South Coast Road is a little dark despite the street lighting.

Located in the historic village of Rottingdean, just 4 miles east of the bustling city of Brighton, this beautifully decorated apartment is everything that you could want for your seaside holiday. Taking its name from the iconic windmill at the top of the hill, from which you have stunning views across the landscape and out to sea, this property is well suited for a small family, two couples, or a group of friends.
Bursting with character, this brand new apartment is located on the second floor of a stunning 19th century building in historic Rottingdean. Decorated with a modern design that compliments its original features, Windmill View offers very comfortable and flexible accommodation for 2 couples or a small family. It has a bright living / dining area, from which you can see the iconic Rottingdean Windmill, and a sofa bed can sleep someone separately. Rottingdean is a fantastic holiday destination and is quieter, yet within easy reach of, the bustling city of Brighton and Hove. Along the village high street you have a number of welcoming traditional pubs that serve delicious home cooked food, and around the corner is the pretty village pond with resident ducks. Just a 2 minute walk away are the pretty pebbled beaches with a traditional seaside feel where you can relax in the sunshine with a Mr Whippy ice cream. This much-loved home will accept longer lets at a discounted price. Distance to Coast: 0.1 miles, Shop: 20 metres, Pub: 30 metres, Central Brighton: 4 miles, Eastbourne: 20 miles. Rottingdean is a lovely, welcoming village on the outskirts of the city of Brighton and Hove. Whilst it offers a more relaxed pace of life, it has plenty of things to see and do! Take a walk around the pretty village pond, learn the history of the village in The Grange museum, take in the stunning views across the landscape towards the sea from the windmill, or relax with an ice cream or fish and chips on the pebbled beaches. A day trip to Brighton, just 4 miles away, is also a must! If you feel energetic you can also walk/ run or hire bikes to cycle to the Marina and onto Brighton along the under-cliff path, taking in the wonderful sea air. Or take the many public footpaths and take a walk up onto the beautiful rolling hills of the South Downs. I would recommend visiting The Queen Vic pub on the high street for traditional home cooked pub food or Bistro Gourmand for fantastic french food. Make sure that you book up for both as they are very popular.
