“The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important and best preserved of Roman churches dedicated to the Madonna. It rises on top of the Esquiline Hill and is the only remaining example of early Christian architecture, even though it has over time been further embellished.”

“The absolute highlight of the route through the Vatican museums is a visit to the Sistine Chapel (Capella Sistina). The name is derived from the founder of the chapel, pope Sixtus IV. The impressive ceiling of this 15th-century Sistine Chapel was painted in the 16th century by Michelangelo. It portrays the story of creation, the great flood and other scenes. The side walls are equally beautiful with paintings of the life of Jesus made by Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio and others. The wall behind the alter shows Michelangelo's painting of the ‘Last Judgement’. The Sistine Chapel is mostly known for being the space where the cardinals meet for conclave when electing a new pope. When a new pope is being elected, smoke comes from the chapel's chimney twice a day. White smoke means a new pope has been elected, while black smoke means the cardinals were not yet successful in their mission. ”

“The Church is most widely known for a masterpiece of art. Since 1545, in the right transept, the Church has hosted a key work of sixteenth-century art − Michelangelo’s Moses. The statue was sculpted in 1513 to adorn the funereal monument commissioned by Julius II from Buonarroti. ”

“The Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem or Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome. According to tradition, the basilica was consecrated circa 325 to house the relics of the Passion of Jesus Christ brought to Rome from the Holy Land by Empress St. Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine I.”

“The Mouth of Truth (Italian: Bocca della Verità [ˈbokka della veriˈta]) is a marble mask in Rome, Italy, which stands against the left wall of the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church, at the Piazza della Bocca della Verità, the site of the ancient Forum Boarium (the ancient cattle market). It attracts visitors who audaciously stick their hand in the mouth. The massive marble mask weighs about 1300 kg and probably depicts the face of the sea titan god Oceanus. The eyes, nostrils and mouth are open. Historians aren't quite certain what the original purpose of the disc was. It was possibly used as a drain cover in the nearby Temple of Hercules Victor, which had an oculus—a round open space in the middle of the roof, similar to that of the Pantheon. Hence, it could rain inside. It is also thought that cattle merchants used it to drain the blood of cattle sacrificed to the god Hercules. In the thirteenth century the disc was probably removed from the temple and placed against the wall of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. In the seventeenth century it eventually moved to its current location inside the portico of the church. ”

“According to the Catholic tradition, they are steps leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem on which Jesus Christ stepped on his way to trial during the events knowns as the "Passion". The stairs were, reputedly, brought to Rome by St. Helena, mother of Costantine the Great, in the fourth century. For centuries, the Scala Santa has attracted Christian pilgrims who wish to honor the Passion of Jesus.”

“The church that we see today was built by St. Paschal I (817-824). The interior has three naves. The church, which can be admired for the splendid floor in the Cosmati style, preserves two masterpieces of the Roman Middle Ages: the mosaics of the triumphal arch of the apse and the Chapel of San Zenone. The Chapel of San Zenone was constructed by Paschal I as a mausoleum for his mother Theodora. Located in the right nave of the church, in form of Greek cross, its vault is completely covered with gold mosaics. It is no wonder that it has been called the "Garden of Paradise": it is an area full of enchantment, the most exquisite mosaic chapel that exists in Rome whose architecture refers to the chapels of Ravenna.”
