Stylish Shepherds Cabin in the heart of the Cotswolds. Free-standing full sized bath, king size bed, two seater sofa and great views. This is as good as camping in the woods gets, no electricity but hot water, plenty of candles and gas to cook on.
This romantic getaway has all you need for a weekend away or a short break. Less than 2 hours from London and an hour from Bristol the Shepherds Cabin is in the heart of the Cotswolds. At the head of the Slad valley, made famous by Laurie Lee's books, especially Cider with Rosie, this idyllic part of the world has changed little since his time. The walk to the Woolpack pub takes an hour and a half and takes you through an unspoilt valley with no houses or humans for the first hour. Or you can drive in 7 minutes. The cabin has hot and cold running water, NO ELECTRICITY, but plenty of candles and torches.
The Cotswolds are an internationally recognised Area of Outstanding Beauty and we are in the middle of it. Just a short walk from The Shepherd's Cabin is at the top of the Slad Valley, made famous in the book Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee and explorable via a network of well maintained and signposted paths and tracks. The Gloucestershire wildlife trust has marked a set of paths and routes to celebrate the centenary of the famous writer's birth and most importantly the valley leads you down hill all the way to the Laurie's local pub; The Woolpack. A local institution, The Woolpack is a fantastic local pub in the traditional sense. Good food, great beer, quality locals and the odd fiddly diddly band to get things going. Stroud Farmer's Market is regularly recognised as the best in the country and is open every Saturday from 9-2. It is well worth a visit for some great local produce.

Tranquil environment, 20 minutes walk from the town centre. As Stroud is fairly hilly, this is mainly uphill, for those who are daunted by such a prospect. There are also lovely walks just across the way and further afield. Beautiful views. And the walk back into town is downhill all the way.. There are various good walks locally in the Cotswolds. Beautiful views of the local environment from the garden out front Non-smoking, Alcohol free. This is a real haven and retreat from a busy world
The environment is quiet and attractive. It is a small apartment, but spacious. It is particularly enjoyed by people who are looking for a retreat and some peace after a busy day. Breakfast is organic, special requests considered.
There is a wonderful view towards the cemetery and The Heavens, beautiful sunsets and lovely walks can be taken there. There are also a few gardens one can enjoy while here.

We have lived in Slad for 35 years, it is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year - our guests can explore the lovely valley and surrounding countryside; we're two miles from Stroud. Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Cotswolds are within easy reach. We have really enjoyed being Airbnb hosts for over 5 years ; we have two rooms available with double beds (but also suitable for single visitors). We have a lovely, lively collie puppy Zelda, so are now getting lots of Slad walks too!
Our room is a good size, light, with lovely views of the Slad Valley and is on the first floor. The bed is an antique pine 4ft6 bed. (NB this bed has a footboard so is not suitable for anyone very tall - please ask for further details). On the ground floor is a newly refurbished shower/w.c. I am happy to provide breakfast - tea, coffee, juice and cereal/toast etc for a modest charge, and for guests to share our kitchen (by prior arrangement). Slad is a small village in the Cotswolds, two miles north of Stroud, set in a beautiful valley (as written about by Laurie Lee in Cider with Rosie - we are just across the road from Laurie's childhood home. There are fantastic walks from our front door, including the Laurie Lee Wildlife Way (a 5 mile trail with poetry posts) , and The Woolpack pub is just down the road which serves very good food. Stroud has a wonderful farmers’ market and thriving vintage shops. Painswick (2 miles) is also worth a visit, and further afield are Gloucester (10 miles) and Cheltenham (12 miles) – for shops and horse racing. The various Cotswold villages are also within easy reach.
Slad is famous for its association with Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee. That aside, it is a lovely place to visit in its own right, a stunning valley to explore and easy to get away from it all in beautiful scenery. Our local pub, The Woolpack, is just a few minutes' walk away (best to book if you wish to eat there), or Sheepscombe (the Butchers Arms) and Painswick are a short drive away for further eating choices. We are a couple of miles from the route of the Cotswold Way, and are happy to collect guests from Painswick (by prior arrangement).

Great country walks, plentiful wildlife and, from the top of our land, views across to Wales on a clear day. Enjoy breakfast (included) in the warm heart of our home. Families welcome. Access via unsurfaced road.
Please note: Each of the three bedrooms on this private floor is available to book on its own. If you would like to book only 1 or 2 rooms, we will not take other bookings for the remaining room(s) during your stay, to maintain your privacy. This entire floor is intended for guests and their family / friends only. The guests' private staircase is easy to access as it is just inside the front door, leading directly off the shared family hall. Single bedroom 1: Comfortable single bed in spacious room with view overlooking garden and field beyond. Egyptian cotton bed linen. Closest to the stairs. And to the toilet. Double bedroom: Comfortable double bed with view overlooking garden (our favourite tree right outside, gorgeous in spring and summer!) and field beyond. Egyptian cotton bed linen and electric blanket. Single bedroom 2: Comfortable single bed with view overlooking garden and field beyond. Egyptian cotton bed linen. Adjacent to double room so ideal for a child. All bedrooms share one private bathroom and one private, separate toilet. There are locks on the bathroom and toilet doors. You'll find tea and coffee making facilities in each room. We offer breakfast from 7.30 - 10am e.g. homemade granola, juice, bread, croissants, local honey. Vegan options available. Just let us know approximately when you’d like to eat and any dietary requirements in advance. Since it's a family kitchen, please expect to share this relatively large space with some of the three of us, on some mornings. Some parts of our home date back to the 16th century. Others... the 1960s! Guests should not expect perfection, nor a manicured garden but, rather; a comfortable family home in a great location. It’s a space we love sharing with guests. Check in is from 4 - 10pm. Check out 11am.
The woods just below our house, although privately owned, have a public footpath running through them. The owners cordon off some of this woodland for some of the year. Swift's Hill; a local, protected landmark is a 25 minute walk from the house, through the woods and along a country lane. You will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Slad Valley, immortalised in Laurie Lee's 'Cider with Rosie'. If you fancy a pint and something to eat, keep going for another 15 minutes until you reach The Woolpack Inn (Lee's watering hole). Or, if you're feeling energetic, you could walk some of the famous Cotswold Way. The friendly, creative and vibrant town of Stroud, with its award winning Farmers’ Market, is only 4mins drive, or 25mins walk (via the woods) away. Nailsworth (lovely cafés), Cirencester (great shops), Cheltenham (Races, Internationally renowned festivals: Jazz, Science, Music, Literature), Tetbury and Gloucester are all within easy reach, as well as many delightful villages. Since our closest roads and neighbours are fields away, you can expect peace and quiet. Exceptions being 1. The occasional animal call; this could be an owl, fox, stag or cow, or 2. The distant sound of rehearsals coming from the home of Giffords' Circus (we highly recommend a visit, and you can avoid any queues of cars by walking!), our neighbours, two fields' away. Please note: the circus only rehearses and performs here for a week or two every year since they tour the country for the remainder of their season. You may wake up to a view of cows, sheep or deer out of the window; rabbits, squirrels or a darting fox. It's the perfect place to come if you love the countryside and wildlife.

Springfield Cottage lies at the heart of this unspoiled Cotswold valley, made famous by Laurie Lee's novel Cider with Rosie. There are many delightful walks in the area and the wildlife is exceptional. There are five Nature Reserves within a two mile radius and it is within an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Cottage is of stone construction built mainly in the 17th and 18th Century. The views and surrounding countryside are beautiful.
The accommodation offers a choice of two bedrooms, one with a 4' 6" size double bed and the other with two single beds. When you book please state which room you would like. Whichever you choose, the other bedroom can be used as a dressing room / sitting room. If you wish to use both rooms as bedrooms a one off extra £20 (total) is payable to cover the extra work. If you are a single but wish to have the double bed then an extra £10 is payable. Both can be paid cash when you arrive. A maximum of two visitors stay in the house at any one time. Please note that the two bedrooms are on the second floor but your bathroom is on the first floor. Whether you book as a single, two singles or a couple - you will be the only guests. There's a new small private bathroom with shower, loo and basin, and also a small kitchen for DIY breakfast. Microwave, small fridge, toaster, kettle, cutlery, china etc. are all supplied. The breakfast supplied consists of Granary bread, butter, marmalade, free range eggs, plain yoghurt, semi-skimmed milk, coffee, tea, sugar, apple juice, fruit, and oatmeal. If you require anything different - please let me know. You can reorder each day you are here. Please note that there are no proper cooking facilities. Apparently you can do scrambled egg or porridge in the microwave! As it is an old cottage the stairs are steep and narrow. The bedroom ceilings are low. There is a patio with table and chairs. A radio is provided. Also a TV (not connected) which can be used to watch DVDs. You may use the garden and swing seat at anytime.
Elcombe has a population of 26. It is very rural, although the thriving town of Stroud is only about two and a half miles away. The photo with the horses was taken from the front garden. If you like the immediate area - but I am booked up for the period you want - you could try ringing my neighbour at Furners Farm, Elcombe.

The second bedroom is smaller with an en-suite shower room, made up as a twin or another kingsize double. Sonus ceiling speakers throughout, WiFi, Smart TV, DVD tech the property. A truly idyllic place to get away from it all. Venturing out you will find a variety of things to do on your door step. Walking is exceptionally popular in the area due to the traditional looking villages and great local charm. While you’re out and about why not visit The Woolpack pub which is known locally as one of the best pubs in the Cotswolds and is famous for being frequented by Laurie Lee. Valley Barn is on the Laurie Lee Wildlife Way and a map is available within the property. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust owns four beautiful nature reserves in the Slad Valley called Frith Wood Snows Farm Swifts Hill and thanks to a very successful fundraising appeal the new Laurie Lee Wood. The Laurie Lee Wildlife Way takes in all four Nature Reserves and the trail is marked by wooden posts carved with the famous authors poems. People come from all over Europe to see the beauty of these valleys. If you fancy going a little further afield you will find Tetbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham with its regency charm, as well as Stroud, Painswick, Gloucester and the rest of the Cotswolds right on your doorstep
Inside the property I have laminated details of all facilities you may need during your stay and my recommended restaurants. I think Westonbirt Arboretum is a lovely place to visit most times of the year and dogs are welcome there.

As featured on Channel 4's 'Hidden Villages of the Cotswolds' and convenient stop on the Wysis Way for walkers, we offer a rural location surrounded by fields, our own meadow and woodland. The Woolpack, as immortalised in Laurie Lee's 'Cider with Rosie', is only a 10 minute walk away. We are dog friendly!
Incredibly picturesque setting in this Cotswold valley made famous by that lovable (and very sadly missed) rogue, Laurie Lee, in his novel 'Cider with Rosie'. Steanbridge, a hamlet nestled within the Slad Valley, is a very special place at all times of the year. Our neighbours train racehorses, which are spectacular to see coming down the lane en masse for their daily exercise. We would be pleased to advise on the numerous walks starting and finishing from our home including the Laurie Lee route (people always get lost outside our front garden!). We offer a light and airy, recently renovated top floor of our mill (with direct access). We love it for its character and history as well as the peacefulness and nature around from our doorstep. The 17th century former woollen mill provides a spacious living area for use of guests with two doubles, or one double and two singles, with a double sofa bed and use of a kitchen. Guests are also welcome to explore our garden, including the meadow with the Slad brook running through it, and our woodland which is home to our chickens. We have a BBQ and fire pit in the woods for guests to use also if they so wish. Whilst we both work full time, we are never too far away and try to be available to assist with guests' needs. Parking outside Upper Steanbridge Mill is for 2 cars and guests are welcome to use both. We also have parking on gravel by our stream the other side of the road for further vehicles. We have taxi recommendations locally if you need a lift anywhere as bus routes are reliable but buses run infrequently. Walking into Stroud is a 40 minute stroll. Mobile phone reception at Upper Steanbridge Mill is patchy, so please let us know if you would like to book a taxi etc. and we would be pleased to help. We live in a remote country setting with hardly any light pollution. The pub however (The Woolpack) is only 10 minutes away on foot and thankfully the walk is downhill on the way back. We can lend a torch! Stroud is 2 miles away, (award-winning Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings) Nailsworth 6 miles, Cheltenham 11 miles, Gloucester 10 miles, Cirencester 10 miles, Bath 33 miles and Bristol 30 miles. Bristol Airport is an hour's drive; London Heathrow 1h20mins; Birmingham Airport 1h 30mins. Paddington to Stroud is 1h 30mins by train and a 5 minute taxi ride thereafter. The British designer Jasper Conran once likened Stroud to ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’ and is a great base to explore the undiscovered south Cotswolds countryside and the Five Golden Valleys. The town of Stroud is the capital of the south western Cotswolds and located at the divergence of the five Golden Valleys, so named after the monetary wealth created in the processing of wool from the plentiful supply of water power. Five populated valleys converge at Stroud, ten miles southwest of Cheltenham, creating a bustle of hills. The bustle is not a new phenomenon. During the heyday of the wool trade the river Frome powered 150 mills, turning Stroud into the centre of the local cloth industry. Even now, Stroud is very much a working town, and one which doesn't need its heritage in order to survive. While some of the old mills have been converted into flats, others contain factories, but only two continue to make cloth - no longer the so-called Stroudwater Scarlet used for military uniforms, but high-quality felt for tennis balls and snooker tables. The Slad valley, again, was a centre of cloth-making until the 19th century when the mills ceased production. The grey-stone village of Slad is scattered along the south-east slope of the narrow valley and has been immortalised by the poet and author Laurie Lee. Our local, The Woolpack, gets very busy at weekends. To avoid disappointment, we would be pleased to book you a table there in advance (Harry, the landlord, is a formidable host but even he cannot work miracles when there are no covers available!). Subject always to our chickens being able to produce enough at the time of your stay, (they don't like too much rain but are pretty hardy otherwise) we can offer 6 free-range eggs for £2.00 - our 8 year old son, Seb, is the boss when it comes to egg sales!
Rural Gloucestershire at its finest. Lesser known part of the Cotswolds (more industrial in parts but equally as verdant) with steep-sided valleys and a character of its own.
