Leenane, Connemara, Irlanda

This quaint studio apartment lies in a stunning location of Connemara, 5 minute walk from the local village and Killary Fjord, Ireland only! Forest, River and Mountain walks at your doorstep. Bicycles are also available to explore the beauty that surrounds us.
The apartment is located at the back of our own property but with complete privacy and little or no noise disturbance. The only noise you may hear is the clucking of the hens, which you are free to feed and collect eggs from. We have great neighbours and often BBQ, if the weather allows.
We are located in the heart of Connemara, with mountains, rivers, forests, lakes and the Fjord all at our doorstep. A really special place for the outdoor enthusiast. We love to host guests from all over the world and encourage both of our young girls to speak various languages. My wife is French and I speak both French and Spanish. We live in the main house above the studio apartment.

Nestled in a private sheltered cove on the shores of Killary Harbour, set amidst the spectacular Delphi mountain wilderness, and close enough to enjoy the town of Westport, Bundorragha Cottage is the perfect rural hideaway.
Recently renovated, the cottage is very spacious with a cozy, rustic charm. It has 4 bedrooms: a master bedroom with a double bed, en suite and stunning view; a second double room which shares a bathroom with another bedroom which has a bunk-bed (ideal for children); and a twin room with a separate bathroom. There is a large, fully-fitted, modern kitchen ideal for any cooking-enthusiasts. A dining room which is connected to the kitchen has the best view looking out onto the water. The living room has lovely, comfortable seating centred around a big open fire. There is a TV and old antique radio available for you to enjoy. Outside the cottage, there is a picnic area and a BBQ for a nice summer evening. Cot and high-chair available on request.
The area is very quiet and picturesque, perfect for relaxation and outdoor adventures. But, there are many local attractions that to keep you occupied. Delphi valley has special attraction for hill-walkers, geologists, and anyone with an interest in nature. Whether you want to climb or drive, take advantage of the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The pier in front of cottage is a great place for fishing or jumping in for a swim, but beware that the water can be cold! Killary Harbour, where the cottage is located, is the only fjord in Ireland. The Connemara Lady, a boat which travels a few times per day on the fjord, is a popular excursion for visitors who want to see the old Famine village, the beautiful views, and sometimes if you are lucky, dolphins. Leenane is the nearest village to Bundorragha and is the hotspot for locals. It is the nearest petrol/diesel depot and is 15 minutes away. It is the location for the filming of John B. Keane’s ‘The Field’. Several of the props used are still in place. If you are looking for a place to eat that is not too far away, the Blackberry Café in Leenane has wonderful, locally-sourced seafood and freshly baked breads for the whole family to enjoy. Louisburgh is a further village in County Mayo. It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides- to the north by Clew Bay with its vistas of the mountains of Achill Island, to the west by the wide Atlantic and the islands of Clare, Inishturk and Caher, and to the southwest by Killary Harbour. Louisburgh is 14 miles (22km) from Westport. It hosts craft shops, a seasonal coffee shop, chemist, supermarket, church, police station and many pubs. Carrowkniskey beach, a 10 minute drive from Louisburgh, is a very popular surf beach where you can avail of lessons and rent surf boards for an affordable price. Westport is our local town and is approximately 35 minutes’ drive from the cottage. It has everything that you should need for your stay – supermarkets, restaurants, parks, shops, pubs, Westport House (includes amusement attractions for children, and beautiful forest walks), and many more fantastic attractions. It has been awarded ‘Best Place to Live in Ireland’, and is especially pretty out by the Quay Harbour.

Leenane is a place of contrasts. Situated at the head of Killary harbour, a 16km Fjord, it nestles under the Maamtrasna and Maamturk mountains on the Galway-Mayo border. The area has been inhabited since prehistory, evinced by ancient tombs and the potato ridges climbing the mountains. Leenane is famous for the stunning and varied beauty of its location. It is this which has been attracting artists, sportsmen, geologists and leisure-seekers for over 150 years. The contrasts of sea and mountains offer vistas alive with colour; the intense green of the hills in summer, the oranges and russets of the autumn mountains, the slate blues of the winter seas. Sheep dot the high hills, roaming wide and free, and salmon can be seen leaping the beautiful Aasleagh falls at the head of the fjord.

It is an off-road trail intended for use by cyclists and walkers. It is 42 kilometres long and begins in Westport and ends in Achill, passing through the towns of Newport and Mulranny as it runs along the coast of Clew Bay. This bay was once home to the legendary pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O'Malley). An unclear number of tiny small islands (so called Drumlins) made this an ideal safe haven for the queen to hide from her enemies. According to legend, there are 365 islands in Clew bay, one for each day of the year. Croagh Patrick – Irelands sacred mountain – towers over the bay.
