Immerse yourself in nature in this beautifully handcrafted eco-home in the heart of the Shawnee Forest. Dancing Bear Cottage is the perfect place to unwind solo, or spend time with a group, with two bedrooms and a loft, spacious living room and kitchen, wi-fi and flat screen tv, and deck overlooking the forest. Remote and serene, this whimsical home in the magical Shawnee woodland is central to many natural wonders, including Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock Trail and Cave-In-Rock state park.
Dancing Bear Cottage is a magical space, with touches of art and whimsy around every corner. The sense of peace and serenity in this place is palpable. It's centrally located in the heart of Hardin County, right smack in the middle of nowhere. If you're on the gravel, then you're on the right street! This home was crafted with much love, and recently renovated from a small-wattage-solar powered homestead, to a retreat home with the bells and whistles of the modern world, including power and wi-fi. The smart TV has apps pre-loaded, with free access to several channels. Bring your passwords for whatever channel apps you prefer, as well, like Sling or Hulu.
The kitchen has a small fridge, microwave, a two burner hot plate, a coffee maker, and pots and pans, dishes and utensils, coffee, teas, oatmeal packs, snacks and stuff like that. Anything you see in the kitchen is yours to enjoy! There's a large kitchen table with 4 chairs, hand-painted purple and cream checkerboard floor, art deco chandeliers, and huge picture windows overlooking the deck and the forest beyond it.
The living room boasts a soaring cathedral ceiling with skylight, a yoga area, a comfy couch, large smart TV, stained glass lamp and elegant rug, games, and the world's tiniest bookstore...set to a backdrop of gorgeous wood and soothing green interiors.
The beds are all new, purchased in Spring 2019. The 1st bedroom, "Wood Haven room", has a queen bed. You are surrounded by beautiful wood interior, with windows overlooking nothing but forest as far as the eye can see. The second bedroom, "The Lavender room", has whimsical barn-wood walls and a cozy full bed.
The loft, "Sky-gazer Heights", is accessible by peg ladder, and has a queen sized bed. (But please don't let young children or reckless adults go up there, as it is high up and doesn't have a secure wall separating it from the drop-off.) It can get hot up there in summer, but there is an opening sky light up there and a fan available, and it's a lovely place to stargaze or watch the clouds drift past.
The bathroom has a shower/bathtub, cushy towels and washcloths, shampoo/conditioner/products.
There are window unit AC's for the main bedroom and the kitchen, as well as fans. There are space heaters throught, and electric blankets. Space heaters during the colder months will take the chill off. There is also a woodstove, but would only be trusted for use by someone accustomed to woodstoves, and requires permission.
The deck hosts a bistro table, and is a great place to hang out or enjoy meals or beverages. The fire pit area is just beyond the deck. "Please be responsible with your fire", says Smokey Bear. The Shawnee Forest needs your awareness.
This place is IN THE WOODS, ya'll...so be prepared for everything that comes along with it. If you are afraid of bugs, wildlife, and dirt...this isn't the place for you. If you love quiet nights, the sounds of nature, privacy, stars, solitude, and wild woods...this is your jam! Phone service may not be totally reliable out here, so make sure you have directions on hard copy before you set out, and please arrive before dark so you can see to check in and so you don't get lost on the endless back-roads. The house has it's quirks, but is overall "user friendly" and set up for being pretty "self-explanatory". There is a short walk from the parking area to the house, and the entry keypad is on the back door. You will receive a code and directional hints before your check-in.
Your neighbors are the deer, the piliated woodpecker, the owls and friendly trees. At Dancing Bear Cottage, you are centrally located to Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock Trail, Cave in Rock, Elizabethtown, and Iron Furnace. There is so much nature to see and do! Not much civilization, though. In towns like E'town and Cave, you will find very basic amenities, like gas and convenience stores, and perhaps a place to eat. If you want civilization in profusion, you'll have to travel. The nearest "big town" is Harrisburg IL, which has all your basic town stuff, like Kroger, movie theater, and multiple restaurants to choose from. Marion, KY is a fun little trip as well, across the Cave-In-Rock river ferry, and through Amish country. Paducah is quite the jaunt, but well worth the journey, for its fabulous foodie scene, and art and music scene.
