Yes, there are mountains in SE Oklahoma - just because you've never seen them doesn't mean they're not there! If you think Broken Bow is pretty, wait until you see this area! This part of OK is way off the beaten path. Since none of the interstates traverse the area, most travelers never see the Kiamichi or Quachita ranges. The hundreds of thousands of acres of private land and timber country are known as one of the most remote wildernesses east of the Continental Divide.
To research your trip, do an online search for "Winding Stair Case National Park", "Kiamichi Mountains" and "Choctaw Council House". Also, check out The Little River and the Kiamichi River. And if you live for Off-Road experiences, look up "The K-Trail of Oklahoma". It's right here - a rugged mountain top trail connecting Clayton, OK to Mena, AR. That's 40+ miles! (It took us 5 hours to go 8 miles in a 4x4.) It's used by rock crawlers and motorcycles. There is abundant internet lore on the perils, adventures and disasters of the K-Trail. From boulders to bears to Bigfoot, it's NOT a casual trail.
If you're more urban oriented (that's City, not Keith!) be sure you take a moment to adjust your thinking. You're 50 miles from a Wal-Mart here...30 miles from the nearest medical. High speeds are for motorcycles, not internet! There's always the chance of encountering bees and wasps, spiders and snakes - but that ain't what it takes to love it! Just be aware.
While this area is wonderfully secluded, the town of Clayton is only 4 miles away - it's a small town but has a grocery store, pharmacy, liquor store, several restaurants, gas-station, Dollar store, tire repair, auto parts, etc. But some things close early on Saturday and many are closed on Sunday! As for the liquor store, it has the basics, but bring your top shelf brands with you!
Avail yourself of the many outdoors activities in the area or settle down and enjoy the peace & quiet of 40 untamed acres. Just get away, relax, enjoy the views. We have WIFI for email only, Amazon Firestick and a smart tv. No cable or telephone but the cell coverage is great for connectivity, safety, and emergencies.
