Kalamoti is one of the medieval "Mastica" villages in the southern part of Chios. It is small, quiet and friendly, and has everything you need (small supermarkets, cafes and tavernas), and is close to one of the best beaches in Chios. The house is restored according to the old plans, spacious and rustic. Balcony and roof terrace add space. Fully equiped kitchen (gass oven top) and microwave, toaster, large dining table. Floor fans.
The helpful care taker lives next door.

L'allotjament

This house is in the village of Kalamoti. This is a small medieval village located in the southen part of Chios, an island east of Athens. The island is not a touristic island (like a lot of the other more well-known places in Greece) and therefore is mostly traditional and unspoiled. The village has all you need, including fresh bread every morning! It is close (4 km) to a fantasic beach (Komi) and easy to reach from Athens, Thessaloniki, other Greek islands and Cesme in Turkey.
Because Kalamoti is a medieval village, the streets inside are narrow and only one street leads through the village. This is therefore a very quiet place with no traffic. Five hundred people live in and around the village and you will probably be one of the few visitors. You will have problems buying postcards, at least a recent one! If you have kids you can just let them out to play - they will not get lost!

The house was built in 1381 and renovated from 1997. It served as the owner's private residence until recently. It is very “rustic” but very comfortable with stone floors, and the original walls, ceilings and door frames have been restored.
On the first floor you will find a big kitchen/dining, a lounge has a wood oven and access to the balcony, bathroom and one bedroom with a queen size bed. Two staircases lead up to the terrace on the roof, one next to a mezzanie (; sleeping loft that can be arranged as extra beds for kids).
Downstairs there is the entrance hall, one bedroom with two single beds Access to this bedroom is through an another spacious room which has a fireplace. This room usually has one single bed (but another bed can fitted in if needed). There is also a small bathroom on the ground floor.
The downstairs is cool on hot summer nighs. All houses in Kalamoti are built with small “openings” as they say.

WHERE TO SHOP
There is a Mini Market just 200 metres up from the houses. The owner speaks English. He has most of the things you need. There is also a small Mini Market at the Inner and the Outer square.
At the Outer Square you will also find the bus stop, the post office and a cash machine.

DINING OUT.
DESPINA'S TAVERNA There is only one taverna in Kalamoti – owned by Despina who speaks English and has very nice and affordable food – ask for today's dishes. She has only four tables inside and five outside, so it's intimate and nice.
There is also a grill in the Outer Square, which serves steaks, gyro (pita with filling), souvlaki etc. This is owned by Elefteria.
There are cafes at the Inner and Outer Square.

The closest beach is Komi. Here you will find three tavernas (open from April to October) which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (the Greeks eat late). There is also has a handful cafes and bars.
Komi is nice all day, but it is especially nice to go down there around 6pm – have a swim and afterwards have a drink or something to eat. At that time it's usually quiet, and you can watch the sunset. In the summer there are buses from Kalamoti (at noon) to Komi with return at 4pm.

MELTEMAKI TAVERNA in Kataraktis (15 Km from Kalamoti on the east side of the island) is owned by Anna. There you can sit and listen to the waves and watch the lights in Turkey.
Of course there are many cafes and tavernas in the local villages and we can recommend a visit to Armolia, Vessa, Pirgi, Olympi and Mesta.

THINGS TO SEE

Chios has a long but also tragic history. Here we will mention places like Pyrgi, Mesta, Emporios, Nea Moni and Anavatos. Chios is also a good place if you want to take long walks in the lowlands as well as in the mountains. In the neigbouring village, Armolia, you find potteries known all over Greece. You can even ask them to make something unique for you. There is also a medieval castle on the hill above Armolia, which is a comfortable walk.
The newly opened Chios Mastica Museum near Pyrgi is fantastic! Open every day except Tuesdays.
More detailed information will be forwarded if you wish to book, and there is also an information folder in the house. You will be met by the car taker who can give more information if needed.
If the house is unavailable on certain dates we may have the possibility to book you in to our second and smaller house. Just send a request.

Serveis i zones comuns

The guests will have access to the whole house except the laundry which is operated by the caretaker. Just tell her when you need to use it. We charge 8 EURO extra for an 8 kilo load.
If needed, she will also supply wood for a minor fee.
The house has wi-fi. Due to the thick stone walls the mobile reception is best on the balcony and the terrace.

Interacció amb els hostes

The caretaker will meet you on arrival and give extra information if needed. She lives just across the street and will help you in any way possible. Do you have any questions or complaints do not hesitate, but contact her immediately so your stay can be as comfortable as possible.
Otherwise - except when you want to use the washing machine - you do not need to have any interaction with the caretaker.

Altres aspectes destacables

The water in Kalamoti is drinkable, but sometimes it has a salty taste. You can of course buy water, but there are water taps around the village were you get well water for free.

It was great time we had in Kalamoti is always in our memories. We found what we were expecting during our stay. First of all Kalomoti is located at the central part of southern part of the island very near to mastichochoria viliges (Mesta, Pygri and Olimpi etc.) also costal viliges (Emporios and Comi) both areas shoul be seen... Second, time is realy passed slow there, I strongly recomend the cafe in front of the Greek Orthodox Churc in moorning... Finally Everything is quite good with the house. Thanks for all and hope to have same again soon.

The house looks much better than in the photos, the village is beautiful too and also, since it lies in Southern Chios, it serves well as a basis for sightseeing. There is a small market, where you can buy anything you need, but it is quite more expensive than a super market in the town of Chios. We really enjoyed the house, especially the terrace and the balcony, but also faced a few problems: - the light in one bathroom was not working and could not get fixed according to the co-host during our stay. - the kitchen equipment was dirty: we had to wash pretty much everything before using it. Also the coffee machine (for frappe) was not working.

Located in a quiet village this wonderful home was a perfect base for exploring Chios. The wonderful beach was just a couple of miles away. Don't overlook the home's rooftop terrace for late night stargazing. I enjoyed the Milky Way each night under the dark local skies.

The house is a beautifully preserved stone house with 2 floors and a terrace. The two families were very comfortable at home. Both floors have a bathroom and a handy kitchen. Also the hosts, Anne and Talia helped us in every way. Thanks for everything.

It is a nice real medieval stone house in the old village. We, as 4 person comfortably stayed in the house. But it is a stone house so that do not mix up with the hotel room. Kitchen is well equipped, some times we preferred to cook our meal ourselves. As to mosquitos, though not too much, just to be on the safe side, do not forget to bring repellents and medicine for their bites. Tania and Evi are living in the opposite door and were very helpful for any needs. Thanks for all.
