Airbnb took a lot of care in building their site to ensure that guests would have access to as much information as possible about a listing to make an informed decision as to whether a property is suitable or not. As a host, I also made sure that as much additional information was readily available before booking. In the "Amenities" section, both kitchen and air conditioning are deleted. Further, within the description of the space, the following is stated:
"Please note that, other than the barbecue, there are no cooking facilities available."
This is further stated in the house rules as follows:
"Please take careful note of the policy regarding cooking facilities at the villa before booking."
The second email to you states the following:
"Please take careful note of the available facilities at the villa. There is a limited amount of fridge space available for food storage, and access to the barbecue, subject to a small charge. The main kitchen is generally not available, but we will always try to accommodate guests’ needs."
Under the circumstances, your criticism of the absence of kitchen facilities seems somewhat unfair.
Air conditioning is excluded because electricity is expensive in Barbados.You are one of only two guests (out of over thirty) who have asked to use it. Our location is such that cooling breezes and open windows (all with insect screens) tend to make it unnecessary and previous guests agreed that this was healthier and more pleasant. I prefer to include in the room rate the practical benefit of a breakfast, rather than the cost of an unused amenity.
When you arrived at the villa, Martin came with you to your car to help you unload. Whilst there, he explained that the gates are left partly open, but as the access was shared, it had been known for them to be closed. He showed both of you how to open the gates manually. Also, in the room he referred you to the "welcome pack", pointing out that there was a lot of information in it that would help you enjoy your stay. Included in the first section is the following:
"Entry gates -
Are generally left slightly open. If they are closed, (description of what to do). This will allow that gate to be opened. Please close it and reset the handle after entry."
"If you are unable to gain entry, please use the bell press on the right hand side of the main entry gates."
Under the circumstances, although the matter was regrettable, I do not understand your failure to take the actions suggested.
Martin & Lynnette are bemused as to how a retired English couple in their late sixties can have "freaked you out" so much. After you arrived, the four of you spent about half an hour having a chat over a rum punch before you went out to dinner, indicating you would see them at breakfast the following day. Breakfast was ready for you, but you did not come out of your room until nearly four p.m. - and went straight out. You were never seen again and you left without any indication that there were problems at all. In view of your previous night's difficulties, I am surprised you were unconcerned about entry problems. You returned late that night, and left the following morning without any warning or discussion. The room was left in an appalling state.
From the first meeting to your departure you were never seen and the only contact was with your girlfriend on the day that you left. She was very charming, but gave no indication of your intended departure or the perceived problems.
I hope that those who read your comments read them in the light of the countless excellent reports for both letting rooms at the property, and draw their own conclusions about the integrity and helpfulness of Martin & Lynnette.
