The Smithy, once an original working forge has now been stylishly converted to a romantic hideaway for two. The Smithy lies just across the yard from the main house and was the original Blacksmiths forge. It still retains many of the original features and blacksmiths artefacts and has made a wonderful conversion with views across the village green to Fontmell Down. Please contact us direct for reduced rates.

Across the yard from the main house, The Smithy was once a working forge. Its current owners have restored and converted it with meticulous care and, with an eye to its past, have kept on display in a corner of the living room the original blacksmith’s tools they discovered – bellows, anvils and hammers – making this an interesting and highly unusual retreat.

This is a highly unusual location, full of character and atmosphere. If you have an interest in vintage cars then this is the place for you. The owner, Tim’s post-war car restoration workshop and small museum with all its “automobilia” and 1934 Lagonda will transport you into a bygone era. A little way up the track Lucy keeps Arab horses, a donkey and free range hens.

The Smithy is also a fantastic spot for keen walkers, with footpaths leading directly up to Compton Down and Fontmell Down, part of an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty managed by the National Trust and well known for its wild flowers, butterflies and iron age cross dykes.

This part of southern England is rich in visitor attractions; grand houses and gardens such as Chettle, Longleat, Stourhead and Kingston Lacy are an easy drive and the historic towns and cities of Salisbury, Bath and Sherborne are all less than an hour away. South Dorset’s World Heritage Jurassic coast is reachable in 30 to 40 minutes.

Serveis i zones comuns

The Smithy is approached from the courtyard by four stone steps, which lead up to a stable door entrance giving access into the double height, open-plan living room. At one end the large fireplace houses a woodburner and at the other there’s an oak refectory table for dining. 5 steps up from here the galleried bedroom area has an ornate iron double bed. Quarry tiled steps from the living area lead down to a fitted ‘galley’ kitchen and a bathroom/WC with shower attachment to the bath.

Outside, The Smithy has its own sitting-out area under a vine and honeysuckle covered pergola. There is also immediate access to the large village green, a lovely picnic area with views up to Fontmell Down.

What a hide away ! We loved this place , just what we needed to chill over New Year. Completely self contained so you never need to leave if you can survive on Lucy's complimentary homemade bread and apple juice !! Oh and Tims log !! Its clean, cosy, peaceful, quirky and the log burner is just heaven. The hospitality is 1st class , Lucy is lovely and Tim is mad ( in the nicest possible way lol ) .Tim proudly ( quite rightly) showed us round the glamping huts , honesty tuck shop, kitchen Hut and his prize old motors ! We will be back....

We loved, The Smithy and hope to go back one day. It was cosy, very clean, warm and comfortable. Everything we needed was there, couldn't fault it.(Actually the only thing, we couldn't work out,was how to use the the top of the cooker). But we got there in the end. Lucy and Tim were very welcoming, they couldnt do enough for us.It was like going from home to home. We loved their dogs, pudding and pie. It was peaceful and quiet,so if you like that, then it couldn't be more perfect. We felt totally relaxed even though we were only there for two nights. Wished we could have stayed longer. The village is lovely and has some beautiful cottages. Its a lovely area full stop. Highlights were the log fire and the very lovely walks nearby. Make sure you take your walking boots as there are some lovely hills to climb within minutes of The Smithy.

We had a fab time. We only booked a few days before so it was a last minute decision but we made a great choice! The place was spotless, Tim and Lucy were very welcoming and had great local knowledge for our planned walk into Shaftsbury. It was the quiet, romantic place we were looking for a rare child free weekend!!! We are already planning to go again but in the winter to make use of the lovely log burner!!!

I just want to thank Tim and Lucy for a fantastic stay. The Smithy was warm and inviting and we had a very comfortable weekend. The fire was the perfect way to end a long walk. Lucy was always accommodating and happy to help with any questions that we had. The croissants in the morning were a lovely touch. I would definitely recommend a stay with them.

We have been living at The Old Forge for 28 years! Over this time the place has been lovingly restored to it's former splendour as a former Wheelwrights and Forge. We are both passionate collectors of all things vintage and retro, vintage cars, tractors, Shepherds huts, and a Gypsy caravan are all part of our collection! Our four children all follow in this family tradition!
We have two beautiful Arab horses (mother & daughter) and a famous donkey, Scrumpy Jack! Also our two labradoodles Pudding & Pie, westie Bonnie and not forgetting the free strutting hens that provide our scrumptious eggs!
We love gardening, cooking, walking & riding and pottering around the Dorset lanes in our 1934 Lagonda.
