Dasher House is large, lovely home built in 1913 and perched on top of Parkersburg, close to downtown and the historic district. Its situation on top of 13th Street hill means you can enjoy panoramic views from the upper levels of the house. We just added a large capacity gas on demand hot water heater, enabling every guest to have a shower without worrying about running out of hot water. We’ve also added a five burner gas grill to the patio so you can enjoy cooking and dining outdoors.

Dasher House is located in an old area of town on a large lot with many homes of a similar age. We live right next door. Dasher House is 4 blocks up the hill from the well-known Juliana Square Historic district. I hope to get the house listed on the historic register eventually. There is off street parking for two cars, and free on street parking for many more.

Dasher House is large—over 2300 sq ft—and the 4th bedroom is the entire third floor of the house, which is one large open room. We have had up to 9 twin beds in it. In the summer, the heat can make it too uncomfortable, even with air conditioning, to sleep there. Although the house is large and can sleep many people, please note there is only one bathroom and a half bathroom of sorts in the basement. One of the bedrooms, on the second floor, has a king size bed. If needed, the bed can be separated into two extra long twin beds. If you want it set up this way, you’ll need to let us know several days ahead of your arrival.

So the house is usually set up to accommodate up to three couples on the second floor and 9 singles (5 twin beds and four air mattresses) on the third floor. There is also a queen size sofa bed in the living room that could be used for a fourth couple if necessary. The main issue with a large number of guests is that there is only one full bathroom and a half bath (of sorts) in the basement.

Another thing to note: the dining room is set up to seat 6 or 8 people normally. If you need more seating, the bar in the kitchen seats two people. To accommodate more than 10 people eating at the same time, we can set up another table to seat 4 people in the foyer. If you need to seat 14 people to dine at once at Bungard House, they can’t all be seated in the same room.

There is a five burner gas grill on the patio. We have seating for 12 to dine outside on the patio. Seating for more than 12 people to dine at once on the patio can be arranged with advance notice.

There is plenty to do in the area. Take a Sternwheeler ride down the Ohio and visit Blennerhassett Island and mansion. Tour the unique and intriguing Henderson Hall plantation. Take a ride on the Valley Gem Sternwheeler and cruise rivers once navigated by George Washington while the Captain narrates on the founding of Marietta and other local history. Check out the oldest Five and Dime store still operating in the United States—Berdine’s Five and Dime in Harrisville, WV. Take a self guided, free walking tour of the Juliana Square Historic District and enjoy the sight of the many elaborate, historic mansions and buildings which comprise West Virginia’s largest historic district.

Guests have full access to the house, including the basement and third floor, with the exception of a locked storage closet on the third floor. The outdoor space--patio and garden--are likewise for guests (although our lawn and garden people may be by to maintain them while you are there). The guests do NOT have access to either garage on the property.

Because of age of the house, some of the original features of the house, some of the furniture, and the multitude of stairs, Dasher House is not the best choice for families with children from crawling age to age six or so. We would prefer, if you have children in this age range, that you discuss with us before booking so we can ensure your family is a good fit for the house and will be comfortable staying there.

For example, some irreplaceable items, like the original 1913 glass light fixtures in the second floor bedrooms, are reachable by children who are standing on the beds. The large screen TV is placed on a low stand and is not secured to the wall (there is no way to do it). None of the tall furniture (china cabinet, metal etegeres, chests of drawers) are secured to the wall. There are a few sharp edged end tables, and several end tables with glass or mirrored tops; some of these could easily be tipped over by a toddler pulling themselves up. The blinds covering windows throughout the house have cords. We don’t have a secure place to lock up all the household chemicals and so forth.

Chasing after little ones might not make for the most relaxing stay. We do our best by providing safety gates for the stairs, etc., but it isn't possible to completely childproof this home. If you have children in this age range, please discuss with us before booking, so we can make sure you'll be happy staying here.

We do provide some items for guests with small children. We have a baby monitor, a high chair, a potty chair, a sink step stool, a diaper genie, and a few (very few) toys and books. There are safety gates on the stairs. We provide cabinet locks and safety caps for the electrical outlets, but you’ll need to put them in place yourself, if you wish to use them. We don’t have a pack n’ play or crib, nor do we have linens for them.

We don't allow pets because of possible damage to the floors, woodwork, carpets and furniture. However, we do sometimes make exceptions in some very rare instances. There are rules concerning pets, if we allow them—a primary one being that the pet can not be left alone in the house. If it is absolutely necessary to leave the pet alone at the house, it must be crated & kept in the basement, and can not be left there for more than 4 hours maximum. We have pet crates we can lend if needed.

We live next door and have a medium large dog, who is a rescue, and he sometimes does not get on with other animals. He's also hand shy (we think he was abused) so if you see us out with him, please don't reach out to pet him until we give you the OK. If you are afraid of dogs, let us know and we will keep him out of your way. He is never let loose--he is always on a leash.

Our neighborhood was developed circa 1900 to 1920. Most of the homes in the neighbor were built during that time frame. The neighborhood directly behind us, Camden Place, is a lovely quiet neighborhood and a great place to view our sunsets. Unfortunately, while the immediate neighborhood is fine, Camden Place borders on one of the rundown areas of Parkersburg. Moreover, 13th Street, which Dasher House faces, is a fairly busy street with a lot of pedestrian traffic. Also, the neighbors across the street on 13th can get loud from time to time. Let us know if they are a problem and we'll handle it.
