Rustic cabin, way Downeast, on a dirt road, on a peninsula in wild, unspoiled Cobscook Bay. Near beautiful Reversing Falls Park. Not close to anything else! Wifi equipped. Outhouse and outdoor shower. *Priced to encourage weekly or monthly stays,* for nature lovers, free spirits, and artists on a budget.

L'allotjament

Half an hour from the Canadian border, the artist’s cabin on our 200-year-old farmstead is an ideal base for exploring the bold coast of Washington County. A week's visit would give you time to hike magnificent oceanfront trails . . . take a whale-watching trip . . . go antiquing . . . venture to the lighthouse on Campobello Island . . . shop for baskets from the Passamaquoddy tribe at Sipayik . . . visit the many galleries featuring work by local artists and artisans in Eastport . . . or just spend time writing, drawing, or painting. Much of the shoreline here is public land, part of Moosehorn Wildlife refuge, a birdwatcher's paradise.

The cabin sleeps 2 in a double bed, and also has a very small (single) futon. If you have kids, you are more than welcome to squeeze them in any way you like, or set up a tent for them.

The cabin is is a simple, classic Maine sporting-camp style cabin. The kitchen/living space is 16x12. It has an attached (16x8) sleeping porch with a full-size bed at one end and a screened eating area at the other end--no glass at that end, just curtains across the screens for privacy. No bathroom: it has an outhouse and an outdoor shower (with hot and cold water). No water view. (We're on a peninsula, but public access to the water is a couple of miles away.) And you have to keep chewable stuff in the breadbox so mice don't find it. (Typical cabin.)

I supply all linens: towels, sheets, pillowcases, blankets.

The screened porch and the outdoor shower mean that staying in the cabin can feel like the best parts of camping, because of the proximity to the outdoors. You'll wake up to birdsong (and the rooster crowing), and if you step out the door at night you'll be astounded at the depth of the stars, in a place with no light pollution, and the depth of the silence, so far from a major road. Any interruptions in the nighttime quiet will be from nocturnal residents of the woods that surround you: coyotes serenading the moon, porcupines crunching apples in the tree outside your window, a resident barred owl calling "who-cooks-for-you?"

But unlike camping, you will have a solid roof over your head, a very nice double bed (firm and new), a little kitchen fully equipped with everything you need to make a real meal, a deliciously hot shower, and a wifi signal.

Regarding the all-important wifi: This rural address gets internet service at 3 mbps via DSL. The signal is fine for basic internet access (I depend completely on the internet for my daily work and research), but it's not sufficient for heavy-data use like streaming video.

Serveis i zones comuns

Feel free to wander anywhere on the farm. A campfire site is near the cabin, and there's plenty of deadwood/softwood to scavenge around the farm, or you can buy camp wood from front-yard stands along Route 1. There's a grate for cooking at the fire pit.

Interacció amb els hostes

I enjoy spending time with guests, but I do everything I can to assure that visitors have an experience of privacy and quiet and I let guests take the lead in determining the level of interaction. Since I live and work right here, I'm usually available on a moment's notice to help visitors with whatever they need. I sometimes need to be away from home for travel, but only after I'm sure my guests are settled and secure.

Yellow Birch Farm is totally kid- and pet-friendly, but your dawg will need to be on a leash around the farm and stay with you if you go out for the day. Our own family includes two teenage boys who are in charge of feeding the chickens and collecting eggs--you're welcome to join them. We also have a quiet, friendly black Lab (cross) named Sheba, who loves to play fetch.

Altres aspectes destacables

The Pennamaquan River, which runs through Pembroke, has several good swimming holes, and nearby lakes and ponds have spots for public access as well. You might want to bring water shoes. Some people swim in the ocean, but it is COLD!

Speaking of cold: I've had visitors stay in the cabin year-round, including duck hunters who've used it as an annual camp in December. But May and October are the extremes of the space being habitable by most people's standards. You will need to take advantage of the electric blanket (provided) during those months, or bring a warm sleeping bag. Kitchen/living area has a propane space heater. The hot outdoor shower has some Scandinavian appeal in the cold weather--but it's not for everybody!

L'hora d'arribada és en qualsevol moment a partir de les 16:00

1. Don't be shy: if you need anything or have questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
2. I'll plan to be here to meet you and answer any questions on your first night, so it's helpful if you can give me a rough estimate of your arrival time. But if you'd prefer to settle in on your own, without worrying about a time frame, that's fine, too--just let me know! There's an info sheet that covers the basics you'll need to get comfortable and make the space your own.
3. Pet policy: Pets are quite welcome. A $25 cleaning fee will be added to your reservation price. You'll need to keep your dog on a leash right around the farm, but there is a pasture down back where dogs can run and play off-leash, as well plenty of untrafficked dirt roads for off-leash walking. Please note that if your dog tends to bark a lot in an unfamiliar environment, this is not an appropriate situation because it may disturb guests in the farmhouse across the driveway.
4. Smoking outside the cabin only. Please use the ashtray.

Cute, cozy, and well-appointed cabin, perfect for exploring northeast Maine. (Or for popping into Canada, which I didn't have time for this trip.) Gretchen couldn't be more helpful and friendly. I hope to return again some day!

Beautiful little space in a quiet location near a local park. Gretchen was a wonderful host and the place was everything I hoped it would be. Great place to relax!

This secluded cabin was a wonderful, restful break from urban life and work. Minutes from an incredibly scenic nature spots (Reversing Falls), surrounded by wildlife and nature - eagles, seals, loons, owls and more. Gretchen was a most welcoming host, and even bought eclipse glasses for use during the recent partial eclipse of the sun. The sleeping porch on the cabin was incredibly restful and the outdoor shower was brilliant. Close to dozens of beautiful trails and nature preserves in the Cobscook Bay area, this spot is perfect for nature lovers and those who want to have a true wilderness experience. In ten days there, I only scratched the surface of day-trip wilderness trails, nature and coastal reserve hikes and walks that are nearby. Close to Eastport and Lubec/Campobello Island for those looking for the traditional Maine fishing village experiences, as well as Machias and Calais. Would definitely visit again and hope to be back! Thanks Gretchen for a wonderful stay!

I love it here. The outdoor shower is one of the reasons I came back this year. The host is the other, Gretchen is such a thoughtful person, always checking in and leaving flowers (and eggs) for you. It's those little things that make her a super host. Already planning next year.

Nice little cabin in a wonderfully peaceful area. Minutes from the water. Reminded me of my great Uncles' farm in VT, rustic but a great escape from everyday life. Wonderful host, my 3 year old had a great time with one of her boys. Didn't want to leave.

Gretchen is a thoughtful and conscientious host. The cabin is charming. The area is beautiful. The clear, cool light in Maine is spectacular. A few words of caution if you are not familiar with DownEast Maine and/or staying in a cabin -The mosquitos are intense. Despite healthy doses of bug repellent it was a constant battle to be outside in the evenings. Our daughter was eaten alive day and night because the cabin is rustic and not mosquito proof. -tics: there are deer tics (the kind that carry Lyme disease) and my wife pulled one off of herself -Location- Pembroke is a hike from pretty much everything. the remoteness gives you plenty of solitude, but grocery shopping, laundry are a chore. -Outhouse. we kind of glossed over the idea of the outhouse when we selected the cabin. its a distance from the cabin and, as outhouses are, full of bugs. Make sure you know what you are getting into. Bedroom- The bedroom is a screened-in porch. it can get chilly in Maine- we stayed for the second week of July and it got chilly at night- but the bedroom can't be heated up. Mice- there are mice.
