Què farem?

We will "travel" through four countries via food: Nepal, Tibet, Colombia and India. These are four cultures strongly represented here in Jackson Heights, telling the story of NYC immigration in recent decades. Tastings will be enough for both parents and children to have lunch. This is designed to be fun and interesting for everyone!

There is some walking in between stops, but it's pretty minimal, and we will be able to sit down (and use a bathroom) at two or three of the stops. Aside from the tastings, the kids receive an activity packet with information: We'll chat a little bit about each country, consult a map and learn some words in the native language, and we'll play a "scavenger hunt" (with a prize for completion) along the way. (Picky eater? There is an incentive given for kids to at least taste everything!)

The last stop is dessert in an Indian sweets shop, where kids get to choose from a host of colorful sweet treats.

I'm a food-travel writer, co-founder of the Eat Your World global food website and a mom of 2. I love showing people around the incredibly multicultural neighborhood of Jackson Heights, where I've lived for a decade and have led food tours for 8 years. If you ask me, this is the real NYC, a true melting pot of cultures!

Growing up here, my kids have developed adventurous palates and a curiosity about the world. Now I'm sharing that with other parents wishing to explore a fascinating off-the-beaten-path NYC neighborhood with their children while introducing them to new cultures and sharing delicious foods from around the globe.

*For larger groups (9+) or wkends, contact info@eatyourworld.com.

(Note: My other popular experience here, Eat Your Way Through Diverse Queens, is kid-friendly but not so designed to engage children as this one.)

On aniràs?

We'll visit a favorite Nepali restaurant, get momos (dumplings) from a Tibetan food truck, pop into a Colombian bakery for more snacks, and try sweets from an Indian restaurant.

I was nervous because my son is a picky eater but Laura got him engaged and excited and he tasted everything! The pace was perfect for my 5 year old. He didn't lose interest but had time to look at the map, write his tasting comments, and experience the food. Learning to say thank you in each language was an adorable touch too! And I really learned a lot too. Laura is super knowledgeable. It was great inspiration for me to further explore the foods we tried.

Price is per eater: Parent + child pay separately. There will be enough food for everyone for lunch, and I want parents to have a great experience too.

Què cal portar?

Two of the eateries provide water; bring your own drink if you'd like a beverage throughout.

An umbrella if rain seems likely.
