Què farem?

We will meet in the Butter Market right outside the main gate to Canterbury Cathedral and hear a little about the pilgrimage tradition in Canterbury. Heading down Burgate we will stop by the sculpture of Gregory the Great and the English slave children to learn about his mission to convert the English. Passing inside St Thomas's church we will see a relic of Thomas Becket and a mural depicting the many saints associated with the city. Next we walk past the medieval city walls to Lady Wootton's Green and the statues of King Ethelbert, the first Christian English monarch and Queen Bertha. Nearby is Fyndon's Gate, the magnificent entrance to St Augustine's Abbey, which was once the "Westminster Abbey" of Kent. Finally we head up to St Martin's Church, the oldest in continuous use in the English speaking world with lovely views across the city to the Cathedral.

I am the founder of a pilgrimage route called the Augustine Camino which leads from Rochester Cathedral via Canterbury to the Shrine of St Augustine in Ramsgate. I have spent the last four years researching the route and have been leading groups for two years. As well as a deep knowledge of pilgrimage I am able to show participants some of the lesser known pilgrim sights around Canterbury. I am very enthusiastic and get groups to participate fully in the pilgrim experience.

On aniràs?

St Thomas's church is the Catholic church of Canterbury. At the Reformation, when the Shrine to Thomas Becket in the Cathedral was destroyed some small relics were hidden by local people. One of these is now housed in a chapel at St Thomas's.
The statues of Ethelbert and Bertha on Lady Wootton's Green depict Bertha being greeted by her husband as she returns from Mass at her church, St Martin's which in part dates back to Roman times.

Andrew was a wonderful guide with a deep and rich knowledge of the history of pilgrimage, church and key players in the background of how Cantebury has become such a special place. He was easy to chat to and the tour was at a pace that allowed for questions and discussion - key elements to any good guiding :)-
