Què farem?

The Seven Eras of Slavery History & Museum Tour is an exploration of Charleston's 350 year old African community. Our experience starts at the Philip Simmons House where one of the greatest African-American artists of the 20th century created a lifetime of beauty. Led by museum docents, witness the humble life of a great Charleston artisan.

We continue our experience by walking down America Street, the center of Charleston’s African-American community. Along the way, learn about and witness the trials and tribulations of the past and present.

We stop briefly at the edge of the African-American community to give a powerful visualization of class division that still exists in the city today.

Finally, we walk to Mother Emanuel AME Church, the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the southern United States. Learn about how free people of color came together to form flourishing communities and houses of worship. Learn how the Emanuel 9 Shooting brought the entire world together in the fight against racism.

Join us for an exploration, an awakening, and an empowerment trip through time in Charleston's African American community.

After decades in the financial industry and a stint in academia, 9 years ago, I became a licensed Charleston Tour Guide and 6 years ago an independent operator. I am your Ambassador to a greater understanding and a good time. Once a walking guide, a ghost tour guide, and for 2 years, one of the city's most requested Carriage Drivers, today, I am a writer, a storyteller, and a social activist on the lookout for the hidden messages, overlooked events, and heartfelt meaning of the world around us, dedicating myself to sharing stories of empowerment: The stories of the Free People of Color. The census of 1820 says of the 50,000 Africans living in Charleston, 9,820 were Free People of Color. Africans who had witted and gritted their way out of Slavery. Come here their story.

Larry has to be the most thoughtful and considerate tour guide I have ever met. I mixed up my days to tour with him and he met me the next day. No attitude. No hesitation. Very accommodating. Very lovely man.

This was a special tour; Larry is very knowledgeable, quirky, and a natural guide through history. I felt immersed by his storytelling and he naturally related to everyone, it seemed like. Highly recommend this.

Larry really makes this tour come alive. I feel like I know an intimate side of Charleston now just having spent a few hours listening to his stories. We learned so much and he had such a great perspective. Definitely the most memorable part of our trip.

Larry has some very interesting insights and made me notice things I otherwise would have overlooked. While I don't necessarily agree with all his points, he gave me much food for thought and starting points for continued research. He is very engaged and passionate about his topic. Also, he keeps his groups tiny (in fact, I was alone), so it is not a lecture but a conversation, far more engaging than other tours I have done.

LARRY IS THE BEST! He is a true expert and wove in historical events and how it has created the society we live in today. He knows his community so well -- including the people! He knew everyone! It was a truly great experience!

This was a lovely tour! Larry communicated this important history through storytelling and personal anecdotes. Our group was small and personal. I thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour.
