Què farem?

Together we ride the boat and cross the Bay of Havana and it will be like entering a time portal. We will know a peculiar town detained in its architecture, culture and transition. We will go to several places where Cubans usually buy their food and prepare a delicious and traditional Cuban meal together. Do you know where to buy fresh and varied food in Cuba? Do you know anything about traditional Cuban food? Do you know how to prepare a dish? Are you interested in exchanging with the locals and entering a typical Cuban house? Well, if you have any of these doubts and are interested in knowing about our culinary culture, this would be a very good experience for you.
Other things to note
Cuba is a hot country with lots of sun because travelers should bring a hat, comfortable walking shoes and if they think they will need water

I am Beatriz Estévez González, a young Cuban who studied Law at the University of Havana. From a very young age my mother taught me how to cook and my grandmother really enjoyed when I was the one who cooked at home. I always liked to invite t cook for friends and I loved the dishes received for the food. I would love to share with you the experience of knowing the house of a Cuban, its culture and culinary traditions.

I did this experience together with my wife and we really enjoyed it. Beatriz and her friend gave us a deep insight in everyday life in Cuba.

Beatriz is very kind and friendly from the beginning until the end. The cooking class is not in La Habana and we took a bus to go to her house in Regla. She told me usually tale a boat which takes just 7 minutes but the day we had class the wave was quite strong in mar hence we went there by bus. When we arrived Regla, she show the beautiful church and the shops, market etc. to get to know the town. Then we went to her house and started cooking together(mainly her). Her mom was there with us and 3 of us had a good time together talking about cooking, culture and Cuba. She is very good cook and all the dishes she made were so delicious. If you wanna have an real cuba experience this will be very good to take. You will learn how general cuban people live, cook and eat. Beatriz also has deep knowledge of cuban history besides cooking hence I could learn from her some history as well. Overall, I was very satisfied with her cooking class and would like to recommend anyone to get to know about cuban’s local life. Thanks a lot Beatriz!

It was such an intimate experience. Leading up to it beatrix was very helpful with directions on how to get to the meeting point. She responded to my questions with as much detail as she could and definitely gave my concerns and questions a lot of priority. We meet at a hotel near the port, where she and her co-host sanders recognized me immediately making things very easy. The experience started with a short walk down the port to the ferry. Where upon we boarded to cross the bay of old Havana. The ferry was definitely a delight. Being able to see old Havana at our back in a panaramic view with Casa Blanco , the statue of Christ and the rolling mountains ahead of us. I very much appreciate the little history lesson she gave me of how and why casa Blanco and the statue of Christ came to be. After we departed we took a short walk to the market where regular Cubans shopped. Very much different from the tourist shopping markets put in place to resemble them in Havana. The supermarket for local Cubans are open air markets with possibly the freshest fruits and vegetables I have ever seen. They explained how Cubans made an effort to harvest and cultivate without the use of pesticides and preservatives. Only harvesting fruits and vegetables in season only. They continued on to explain to me a regular Cuban diet. Their source of protein, nutritions, fat and spices. They even showed me how Cuban people beat the heat and use small fermination tricks to sustain meat in the Cuban heat. By process of curing with spices, salt and a small level of fermination. They even went further to explain the day to day aspects of the market. How the markets isn't constant all day. How only certain things can be found in the morning rather than in the evening. Explaining, its mostly based on temperature of the day. After our little culinary lesson in the market we bought our groceries and headed off to her house. At her house we got set prepping our vegetables for cooking. While prepping, she made me possibly the most unique pink colada I had ever had. She had made some coconut milk herself the day before using only coconut meat, water. Then, blending and passing/squeezing it through a filter bag. She also explained how to she harvests coconut fat(oil) for later use. for cooking, as chapstick and definitely a great hair product. Using some of this homemade coconut milk, ice, cinnamon, pineapple, white and dark rum she made me possibly the most unique pineacoladoe I ever had. After prepping all of our ingredients we set off cooking, while sanders provided some music. we started trading stories of our different ways of life, giving me a glimpse of their day to day lives and how they grew up in Cuba. After we were done cooking we took all the food and set it on the table and sat down and had dinner family style. We had an assortment of cook. From fried okra with seasoned chicken with a lime dressing. To a slow cooked porage with a mix of spices, cumin, corn meal, chorizo, galric and onions. We even made a fried corn meal, onion and egg biscuits, just crunchy and delicious. Finally we had what they called the perfect paring. Guava and cheese. She had already prepped the guava the night before with water and sugar. She had guava steeping in a syrup for almost a way. Allowing the guava to infuse into the syrup and in the process it made the guava a little softer. To top it off she added this very nice slightly salty cheese to balance out the sugar. The perfect matrimony as they explained it. It was a great was to finish off dinner. Juicy , slightly salty , and very sweet. I had a great time Beatrix and sanders. They opened me into their house and gave me insight I would never have gotten from just walking around the market place or using the ferry on my own. They're the reason I can soundly say another visit to Cuba is definitely in my future.
