Què farem?

We'll meet at the Art Institute of Chicago to explore art and drawing with an SAIC Professor, from a "cheeky" perspective: We’ll focus on the nude human forms in art you might have thought were funny as a kid, until you learned that “art is serious”. For a little change of pace, let’s be a little LESS SERIOUS ABOUT ART. Let’s draw butts and stuff, people!

After a demo of drawing form and light, and a brief slideshow about visual innuendo, we'll head into the collections, seeking out the basic forms of humanity. For example, we will look for human-shaped sculpture with particularly interesting backsides, bosoms, or other parts not discussed in polite company. We’ll draw light, shadow, and shape of these wonderful, taboo areas of the human form, as we see them in art.

This experience is part sketch class, part art appreciation, part irreverent art party. Exploring the medium of sketch, by allowing our sense of humor and joy to guide us, we are fostering our innate creativity, the child-like curiosity that had us giggling as kids, when we first noticed human forms in art (and were perhaps scolded). It's the idea that though viewing and making art is serious and profound, it can also be fun, social, and done in an encouraging, fun atmosphere. For a little while, LET’S GET UN-SERIOUS! This is for art adventurers of all levels. Admission to the museum is included.
Other things to note
Please bring at least basic sketching supplies, or plan to purchase from Museum Shop ($20-$30). Take care of coat check before the start time, if possible. Latecomers (w/in 15m) meet at Statue of the Aphrodite of Knidos, gallery 154

On aniràs?

The Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing is where we will start. We will venture into the Museum from there, moving as a group for the first drawing session or two, and eventually fanning out for a kind of cheeky treasure hunt, looking for fun human-like art to work from. We will join up, weather permitting, in one of the lovely outdoor areas of the Museum, or in the grand Modern Wing hallway for a little "best of" sharing session.

This was a blast!! Laura Mae is phenomenal, and I left the class feeling inspired. Regardless of your skill level, I highly recommend attending this event if you have any interest in drawing whatsoever- it's super fun, comfortable, informative, and you'll get plenty of giggles out of it! You couldn't ask for a more impressive venue, or a cooler teacher!
