Què farem?

Each guest will be given a 30” square cotton fabric piece to dye in the indigo vat. You can decide on a Shibori folding technique to create a pattern with the indigo dye, or choose to create a solid dye pattern for your fabric. I will have all the bands and wooden blocks necessary to create the patterns, and I will have examples of several different patterns for ideas. We’ll begin by folding, tying, or binding the fabric to create a pattern and then wetting the fabric in water. Then we will immerse the fabric into the indigo vat to take on the indigo blue dye. The fabric will be a yellow green color once removed from the vat. Slowly the fabric will begin to turn blue as the oxygen in the air makes contact. It will take about 20 minutes for the indigo dye to oxidize completely. Once the fabric has oxidized, you can dye it again in the vat to achieve a darker shade of blue.
Other things to note
You will be working with indigo dye, so wear casual clothing and shoes. Gloves will be provided. In the event of rain, we can do most of the preparation indoors and work outdoors in a covered area.

I am a chemist in the laboratory of one of our local hospitals. I have also enjoyed designing and creating my own clothes, draperies, and slip covers for my home. Several years ago I became interested in indigo and it’s deep ties to colonial coastal South Carolina through the work of Eliza Lucas Pinckney. I love the different designs and patterns of Shibori, the art of Japanese shaped resist dying, using indigo as the dye medium. My work as a chemist and a textile artist have given me the confidence and experience to share my love of indigo and Shibori with others!

On aniràs?

The entire indigo dyeing experience will take place at my home on a lovely wooded one acre lot in a quiet secluded area of downtown Summerville. We will fold and prepare the fabric for the dying process in my kitchen workshop area. Then we will move outside to where the indigo dye vat is kept. Guests will be able to sit and relax on the deck or the terrace by the pond while waiting for the indigo dye to oxidize.

Judy and Kent were very kind and I enjoyed meeting them. They also had two sweet Pomeranians who stopped by for a brief moment. Judy was our guide and we ended up creating the pieces indoors in their beautiful home in the woods on a rainy October day. Judy provided a cloth the size and shape of a large dish towel, as well as some materials to create designs. We were provided several pieces of paper describing some basic Shibori processes for how to make the designs. We were also shown a few examples of completed pieces. There was a vat of indigo and once we created our designs with materials provided, we went about creating our pieces. I liked how they turned out and a special thanks to Judy and Kent for allowing us to come a little early as we were leaving to go to the airport immediately following, and with the bad weather and needing to return the rental car, we made it just in time! I think the only thing that would have taken this experience to the next level would have been maybe a little more discussion about Shibori and what goes into the thought processes for creating designs in the Japanese tradition. Overall, I really enjoyed this experience and appreciated Judy and Kent accommodating us. We love the finished product and would absolutely participate in this activity again!
