Què farem?

Kotagede is a 16th century town known for silver making, it's dotted with narrow streets and quirky laneways. We will make batik with hot wax and special tools, this process is called canting. After we have finished the colouring process we will let the batik dry as we explore the old neighbourhood by bicycle or foot (there are few motorbikes or cars), I will supply the bicycles and you will be guided by myself or my co-host through unique local spots amongst the gorgeous historical streets. Upon our return home, we will enjoy a traditional Javanese meal. After our exploration we will return to my house to view the finished dried batik.

On aniràs?

We will conduct the batik in the front of my family home, an open studio that looks out to the village around me. Children are often spotted playing nearby and will be curious to welcome you to our village. It's a special place to be and experience.

Batik is traditional and still have to cultivate. And its fun for learning how to make batik because is like try to be a patient one 😅. And the host is so fun and competent at her field (like art in her blood) Super fun and we had lunch “kupat tahu” at host’s house. Her father made kupat tahu for guest who workshop batik with mba Nunung and is sooo yummy

This was by far the best experience inJogja. Even better than the temples! I got to make art, talk about the culture, the neighbourhood, and the history of Kotagede. But above all, I became friends with Nunung and her father. This is a must when visiting Jogja :)

This experience was amazing, hands down the best I could have booked. Set in a small studio in the old town, you're immersed in the culture and you immediately welcome and right at home. I was greated with coffee, local snacks and a big smile. Nunung is so very special. She is very knowledgeable and has great artistic style. Lucky for me, it was low season and I was the only student. It was nice not only to have have 1:1 attention, but to really get to know Nunung and her family. Her father cooks the most amazing lunch and takes you around the neighborhood while you wait for the batik to dry. I honestly wish I could spend another day here or even a week making something larger. I'd give her a 100 stars if I could!

Thank you Nunung and Pak Seno! Nunung was very patient and fun and caring when showing me how to create batik. She has experience teaching all sorts of arts to her community and I feel grateful to be able to experience this. I really enjoyed our conversation throughout the process. The process happens outside in their shaded back patio and community members and kids would stop by to say hello, which made me feel like I was part of the community for a day :) The special snacks that you can only find in this town were a real treat. Pak Seno’s lunch was also healthy and delicious! So special to be able to have homemade food. Finally, Pak Seno showed me around Kotagede and to the older parts of the town with traditional architecture. He described a lot of the culture and values of the old kingdom and it was wonderful to be able to learn about the town in a way I definitely would not have been able to just visiting on my own. I happened to be visiting during a carnival that Nunung had helped to organize, so both went out of their way to take me to the carnival! Pak Seno and Nunung are special hosts. Terimakasih!
