Què farem?

When you only have a couple of days in a city, it’s very easy to just tick off the top sights and cross them off the list. But you’re not that kind of tourist, are you? Delve deeper and get to know Budapest beyond the ruin bars, thermal baths, and the Castle District.

Join this tour and explore one of the most underrated and misunderstood neighborhoods: District 8. Once an area with a seedy reputation and a Romani ghetto, today it thrives with an exciting underground cultural scene, galleries and ruin pubs run by left-wing NGOs and non-touristy bohemian bars.

Come with me as we wander the crumbling streets lined with former aristocratic palaces, learn about the recent gentrification, visit cultural centers the government is trying to shut down and peek at artists at work in Budapest’s most exciting neighborhood.

On the tour you will:
-Grab a coffee a Europe’s largest cultural space supporting disabled employees
-Visit a design shop that supports impoverished children in rural Hungary
-Experience a ruin bar that is a creative hub for NGOs supporting minority and immigrant rights
-Visit local artisans avoiding fast fashion stores and tourist traps
-Visit small galleries
Other things to note
As we won’t visit the main touristy spots of Budapest, this tour is recommended for those travelers who want to explore a less known part of the city and are interested in offbeat spots and areas.

My name is Attila and I’m a licensed tour guide who lived in the VIII District for 10 years. I’ve become passionate about this neighbourhood as I’ve watched it change as it’s been slowly gentrifying over the years. I feel it’s a vibrant place thriving with a kind of creativity that I feel is missing from the VII District. I believe in sustainable tourism, which is why I like to support local businesses and NGOs in the VIII District. Although I run other tours in the VII District, I am always very excited to show people around what I think is the most interesting neighbourhood in Budapest.

I enjoyed the walking tour and learning about this particular part of Budapest. I also appreciated seeing the different architectural styles during our walk.

I was lucky enough to do two tours with Attila while I was in Budapest and they were both the highlight of my trip. Attila's District 8 tour is an absolute must-do when in Budapest, I cannot praise it highly enough. If you're a fan of travelling of the beaten track, undiscovered local gems, breathtaking architecture, history and art then this is for you. District 8 is a fascinating area steeped in history and is fast becoming 'up and coming' so I'd suggest you check out this area now before the masses know about it. A huge thank you to Attila for being an amazing, kind guide. His knowledge and passion for the city the city is second to none and it's fascinating to hear his personal experiences and stories about the city.
